2010 Election Guide: When, where, and how to register

FOR FIRST-TIME VOTERS

How to qualify as a voter: You must be at least 18 years old with a one-year residence in the Philippines and six-month residence in the place where you want to vote.

What to bring: A valid ID (passport, company ID, school ID, NBI clearance, senior citizen’s ID, driver’s license, SSS/GSIS ID, etc.) with your picture and current address. Save yourself the trouble of finding a photocopying machine by bringing the required photocopies of the front and back of your ID. Pens may run low so better bring your own. No need to bring money for registration because registration is free.

What to wear: Depending on the COMELEC office and the time you go, registration can take from half an hour to half a day or more. Wear light and comfy clothes and shoes to be on the safe side.

Where to go: Call or visit your barangay hall and ask which COMELEC office you should go to. Your parents and neighbors might also know.

When to go: COMELEC offices are open Mondays to Saturdays including holidays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. New voter Katherine Lopez was the first in line when she registered in June. “I suggest people go as early as 8 a.m. so they won’t have to deal with flaring tempers that usually come with long waiting periods,” she says.

This is useful. However, I just discovered that I need to re-register. When did Roco run? That’s the last time I voted.

Drat. I’m registering this week.

@crabbypatty: i think roco ran in the 2004 presidential elections.

What about Filipino Canadians? I have not lived in the Philippines fro many eyars, but during my recent visit, I would like to take a more active role in rebuilding Philippines. I also recognize that the 2010 election will be one of the biggest one ever seen. I would like to vote, what do I do?

Hi, Normel,

According to the COMELEC website, you have to be (1) a Filipino citizen and (2) a resident of the Philippines for one year and of the city where you want to vote for at least six months prior to the election, and of course, (3) 18 years old.

If you meet all those requirements, you can just register at the COMELEC office in your area.

Im 24 years old , eversince d pa nkapag register/vote. Im residing in Guadalupe for 6 years. Nung kumuha ako ng brgy clearance sa Brgy, hall they had denied my request..kc i only live in rented place(boarding hauz)bka daw hinahabol ko lng ung mga benefits sa makati.

Hi Mabhel,

According to COMELEC NCR (527-9624), you can register using your current address. Just bring a valid ID with your picture and address to your local COMELEC office. No need to go to your province. Also, you don’t need a baranggay clearance to register.

Hope this helped. :)
