Chinese New Year Feasts: Your SPOT.ph Guide

The year of the Metal Tiger officially starts on February 14, Sunday.  For families who celebrate Chinese New Year (or if you just want a second chance at celebrating a new year), we list down places where to ring in the new year, eat a hearty feast and hope for happiness, luck, health and good fortune in 2010:


Choi Garden Seafood Restaurant

Choi Garden’s Chinese New Year menu starts at P9,800 for 12 people. The feast includes a Cold cut combination, Sea moss, oyster and pig tongue, Shell meat abalone, Fried taro duck, Steamed lapu-lapu and Fried crab with salt and pepper.

Choi Garden is already fully booked for lunch and dinner on February 13 and 14.

Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila

xintiandiXin Tian Di will usher in the year of the Tiger with set menus that start at P11,800+ for 10 people. The menu includes the Yu Sheng Platter, Kongbao Scallops & Prawns in Taro Ring Basket, Eight Treasure Dried Scallop Diced Winter Melon Clear Soup, Fried Juicy Pigeon, Steamed Garoupa HK Style, Sauteed XO Sauce Shell Meat with Seasonal Vegetable, Braised Pork Leg with Sea Moss & Steamed Buns and Steamed Garlic Crab.

The Love Letter or kuih kapit, wafer-thin egg rolls or triangles which are believed to be auspicious due to its history and is a traditional Chinese New Year delicacy, will be available for sale at Xin Tian Di until February 28, 2010. Other popular Chinese delicacies such as Fish Tikoy, Brown and White Tikoy, Pineapple Tarts, Peanut Puffs, Deep-Fried Beehive Cookies and Cashew Nut Cookies and various Singapore kueh such as Steamed Pumpkin Cake and Peach-shaped Dumplings are also available.

On February 13, New Year’s Eve, Xin Tian Di will be open until 1:00 a.m. to accommodate guests who wish to welcome the New Year. Free light Chinese cocktails will be made available to guests who would choose to stay.

On February 14, firecrackers will be lighted at the Crowne Plaza driveway at 11 .am. to ward off evil spirits, followed by a Dragon and Lion Dance performance. Guests are welcome to join the parade and feed their Ang Pao envelopes to the lions for good fortune.

Dusit Thani Manila

basixBasix will be offering the YU SHENG BUFFET from February 13 - 21, 2009. The buffet spread will include noodle stations, dim sum, a wok station, and various grilled seafood and meat, for only P1,150 per person for lunch and P1,299 per person for dinner. Buffet includes bottomless soda, juices, wines and local beers.

The Yu Sheng Buffet will not be available for dinner on February 13, Friday and February 14.

EDSA Shangri-la

edsa_shangThe Isla Ballroom will be open for revelers on February 14. Lauriat will be served for lunch and dinner at P14,888+ for ten people. Guests can join the dragon and lion dancers as they perform the much-awaited prosperity and luck dance while a feng shui expert will read fortunes for the Year of the Tiger during the Chinese New Year’s Day lunch.

There will be a special Yeesang menu from February 12 to 14 at the Summer Palace for at P14,888+ Isla Ballroom for ten people.

Gloria Maris

Enjoy Gloria Maris’ set menus starting at P9,800 for a group of twelve. Included on the menu are assorted cold cuts, Salad seafood roll, Fried taro with golden mushroom,  King fish with garlic and Fried pigeon.

The Chinese New Year menus are available for lunch and on February 13, Saturday and February 14, Sunday.

Gloria Maris is already fully booked for lunch on February 14.

Hai Shin Lou

Hai Shin Lou will be serving “Lucky Dishes” on Chinese New year weekend such as Crabmeat soup with fish mao and golden mushroom, Braised lapu-lapu with bean curd stick and pork brisket, Stir-fried fresh scallops with sweet and spicy sauce, and Sea moss with abalone mushroom and lettuce.

Welcome the Lunar new year with Master Chef Andy Chan’s set menus at Li Li that start at P1,988 per person (minimum of four persons) which include Suckling Pig Combination Platter, Braised Shark’s Fin Soup with Seafood, Bamboo Pith, Braised Dried Oyster with Hair Moss, Roasted Chicken with red bean curd, Steamed Prawn with Minced Garlic and Vermicelli, Braised Assorted Vegetables with Crab Coral and Pan-fried Glutinous Rice Cake Coated with Eggs.

Makati Shangri-la

Enjoy a Chinese food feast at Shang Place with their special menus starting at P15,880+ for 10 people. Scrumptious dishes include Roast Suckling Pig, Deep-fried shrimp balls with quail eggs, shark’s fin soup with dried scallops with sea moss, steamed zucchini with garlic and New Year cakes.

Mandarin Oriental Manila

mandarin_eyedottingOn February 13, Saturday at 10 p.m., cocktails and an imperial ten-course lauriat dinner will be served at the Mandarin Oriental Ballroom. Colorful Chinese dance performances by the ShinYi Dance Troupe and auspicious rituals will be performed by renowned geomancer Master Joseph Chau. A fireworks displaywill light up the skies shortly before 11 p.m.

Mandarin Oriental’s Chinese chefs’ exquisite menu includes the New Year’s Five Happiness combination platter consisting of: Roasted Suckling Pig, Deep-fried Seafood Roll with Mango, Marinated Jellyfish, Szechuan Style, Bean Curd Sheet Roll with Shrimp; and Sliced Conch Meat in Soy Sauce.  Other dishes are Braised Shark’s Fin Soup with Crab Meat and Roe, Stir-fried Scallops and Shrimps with X.O. Sauce,  Two-ways Chicken, Steamed Live Grouper in Home-made soy Sauce, and Mandarin Oriental’s homemade tikoy.

Tickets are at P2,688 for adults and P988 for children, with access to all the festivities: a seat at the midnight lauriat and a copy of Master Joseph Chau’s 2010 Year of the Golden Tiger forecast. The 2010 forecast book will be sold at P398 at the Lobby Shop and Mandarin Deli beginning February 13.

Tin Hau will also be serving bountiful lauriat set menus created specially by Chef Hann Furn Chen which start at P1,328 per person (for two to four people).The lauriat menus will be available from February 13 to 28 for lunch and dinner.

New World Hotel Makati

jasmineChef Choi Wing Ki has prepared a Chinese New Year’s menu for lunch and dinner at Jasmine Restaurant from  February 12 to February 20. Savor the exquisite six-course set menu that highlights the Ultimate Eighteen Treasures Feast in Wooden Basin with 18 epicurean ingredients such as Abalone, Sea Moss, Tiger Prawns and Eel, among others,  while enjoying complimentary refills of Chinese Ginseng Wine. The six-course meal is P14,800 for a table of six persons and P28,800 for a table of 12 persons. To round-off the meal, a complimentary box of Special Radish Cake will be given to a group of six and two boxes for a group of 12.

A lively Lion and Dragon Dance will also be held on Chinese New Year’s Day, February 14, at the hotel’s lobby and Jasmine at 1 p.m. by the Ling Nam Athletic Association.

Peking Garden

The menu includes four kinds of appetizers, Shark’s fin soup with shredded chicken and Yunnan ham, Peking Duck, Fried prawns and fresh scallops with Chinjew sauce, Deep-fried lapu-lapu with fresh mango, Braised dried oyster and fish maw with sea moss, Steamed supreme soup and pork dumplings, and Hot sweetened almond puree with glutinous balls as dessert.

President’s Tea House

president_teahouseWelcome the new year with President’s Tea House special menus at P4,480  (Binondo branch) or P3,980 (Mall of Asia branch) for ten people. The menu includes Crabmeat green soup, Beef with broccoli, Fried spareribs, Sauteed Fresh scallops with Brocolli, Minced Pork wrapped in lettuce and Mandarin Chicken.
