Now on its 40th year, Earth Day which began on April 22, 1970 with US Senator Gaylord Nelson, has gone beyond raising awareness in America. Today, the Philippines is one of the many countries supporting the cause, with over 1 billion people participating in Earth Day activities worldwide. From concerts to parties, commit to fun Earth-friendly activities this week and strut your green side:
Pasig River Fluvial Parade
When: April 22, 5 a.m. 9 a.m.
Venue: Pasig River, Manila
Take your cause to the waters by joining the annual Pasig River Fluvial Parade. Held every year to celebrate Earth Day, the parade by the Sagip Pasig Movement (SPM), gathers PM workers, community leaders, partners, and friends in a parade of boats along the Pasig River. The event aims to share information and educate people about the state of the country's rivers.

Cultural Center of the Philippines' Earth Day 2010 Celebration
When: April 22, 5 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Where: CCP Complex, Pasay City
Music, film, health, and food all come together at the Cultural Center of the Philippines' Earth Day Event. With the theme "Luntiang Lungsod, Luntiang Sining" (Green City, Green Arts), the sun-up to sundown celebration will open with a Bike-a-thon at 5:00 a.m. followed by a Human Mural which will b formed at 7 a.m. to create the logo of Earth Day.
The festivities will also feature a Green Gym, an aerobics session of Asian traditional movement to be led by Slimmers World, and an exhibition by the Dragon Boat Federation of the Philippines, Poetry on Water, to be held at the Harbour Area. Green stations between the CCP Main Building and the Production Design Center will showcase hands-on demos and lectures on composting, waste segregation, health and wellness tips. Cooking demonstrations highlighting slow food will be featured by the restaurants at the Harbour Square Plaza.
Injecting style into the Earth Day celebration, is the Hat Design Contest, which will be held at the CCP Main Theater Lobby from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration starts at 1:00 p.m. Kids and adults alike can embellish their buri hats (or any hat made from similar materials) with their chosen decorative materials. Prizes up for grabs include buffet dinners in Pan Pacific Hotel, one-month gym memberships, gym bags and gift certificates from Slimmers' World, as well as tickets to Manila Ocean Park tickets.
Cinemalaya films with environmental themes will also be screened at the CCP Dream Theater while on display at the CCP Lobby are exhibits on Climate Change and the Creative Industry Market, where one can learn how to create artistic products from recycled materials.
The event will close with performances by the Philippine Madrigal Singers, ventriloquist Ony Carcamo and his pet Dodo Bird and Gorilla, BP Kids, Bulacan Brass Symphonic Band, GMA 7 Talent BJ Forbes and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO) with Maestro Olivier Ochanine.
