Twenty-four films made it to the final list of this year's Cinemalaya Film Festival. The film festival, which highlights local independent films, will run from July 9 to 18, 2010 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

The finalists are in competition for the following categories: New Breed Category (full length and short features) and Directors Showcase.

The New Breed category features nine full length films and ten short feature films:

The Director's Showcase is a new addition to the competition and will feature works by Filipino directors who have directed atleast three films which have been released commercially. Big-name directors Mario O' Hara (Ang Paglilitis ni Andres Bonifacio), Joel Lamangan (Sigwa), Gil Portes (Two Funerals), Mark Meilly (Donor) and Joselito Altarejos (Pink Hako-Halo) join this year's Directors Showcase.

"Unang taon palang ng Cinemalaya, nakita ko ang mga pelikula na hindi ko magagawa sa mainstream. Sabi ko, 'Sana bata pa ako, sana magawa ko ang mga pelilulang gusto kong gawin.' Dahil sa Cinemalaya, nagawa namin ang mga pelikulang gusto naming gawin," Joel Lamangan told media during the Cinemalaya press conference held last June 16.

The Best Film in the Directors Showcase will receive a prize of P300,000 and a Balanghai trophy.

This year's Cinemalaya will also pay tribute to LVN Studios with a retrospective of LVN films from July 12 to July 18. The Cinemalaya Congress, a staple during the film festival, will examine the notions of "independence" in Filipino indie films of 2000 to 2009.
