10 Stupid Expressions That Must Die Soon

stupid-expressions

Unfortunately, language does not have a governing body like the WHO. There are no monitoring bodies to track down the migration of viruses, no one to combat their spread, no one to file criminal charges. These are the phrases that contribute to the speedy decline of civilization. And whoever started them deserves a slow and painful death by swine flu.

1. "Ayt"– Because you're not black, and you're not a total idiot. And don't think for one second you're cute.

2. "Aylavet"– It's like Kris Aquino– tolerable on the computer monitor and the cellphone screen but irritating when heard. This takes on a heightened level of annoyance when the speaker animates the expression by prolonging the last syllable. At which point I summon all my powers of restraint to stop strangling speaker with my bare hands. Especially when said speaker happens to be a red-blooded male.

3. "Meh ganun?" - Because the radio station Energy FM 91.5 is among the best reasons for avoiding public transport.

4. "Elow po"– With the optional "poh." Indicates that the speaker is either a 14-year-old girl who has a pink-wallpapered Friendster account or just a complete dumbass.

5. "Chorva"– Because in 1574 God invented the dictionary. Two and a half months before that, God invented the human brain, which he intended for complex systems of operations like logic, reasoning, analysis, and language. Which means, God did not want all his creatures to speak like they worked the night shift at Reyes Haircutters. If he did, we'd all have naturally bleached, over-gelled hair. That, plus perennially raised collars.

6. "Nownah"– Which is "now na" pulled down to unfathomably moronic depths, but is actually persuasive in specific instances. E.g. "I will bludgeon you until you're comatose, you stupid idiot. When? Nownah."

7. "Ayuz"– The bigger schmuck, however, is that record company dork behind Ayuz: The Compilation.

8. "Haller" – God's way of telling us we're not reading enough books.

9. "Text-text"– Indicates several things: a. A certain appointment/ person is not important enough to merit an exact time and place. b. "We're so dumb we can't even make up our minds about which restaurant. You'll be late? It's okay. I'll be late, too." b. "Let's play it by ear. Maybe I'll feel lazy and I won't be in the mood to see you." c. The improvisational nature of the Filipino temperament. Which is probably explains why we're the mightiest, most efficient nation on the planet.

10. "OMG" – Marks the completion of our descent from human beings into ants.

I agree with malfon.. chill lang. we have to respect other people's take on language, though it might irritate us, it does not neccessarily harm us so why be so bitter? and oh, you can't kill it but rather, these expressions will take the natural course of death (you can only hope to accelerate it). however, you can expect that some other st*p*d expression/s will surface. using this expressions does not mean you are brainless, heck, i tell you, I know of a total nerd (summa cum laude and all), who can use all these expressions in a sentence. just my 2 cents peace~ :D

I beg to disagree. I think it's precisely these new invented words that make the language so much alive by being ever-changing and ever-adapting to the present culture and generation. It's a natural path for language to evolve through time, what's so bad about that? I agree that some of them are quite irritating to hear/see, but well, that's the beauty of it: Everyone takes part in the changes made in language.

I love Lourd De Veyra and the article is funny in parts, but it does reek of an elitist piece reminiscent of Malu Fernandez. Yeah, remember her? People wanted to skewer her for her jibes at fellow Filipinos and this is the kind of humor that I could equate with that. The jibe at Reyes Haircutters people may be true but it implies that people who work at Reyes Haircutters and listen to stations like Energy FM are st*p*d. Which is 80% of Filipinos. I resent that such insensitivity comes from one of the best writers and artists around. We should know better.

Filipinos: making language the biggest deal ever since the post world war era.

I'm really amazed by these kinds of writers who use bigotry and prejudice to get page views in their articles disguised as "blogs". Are you getting payed by page views? If so, nice job, you're really good at it.
  • chez Jul 15 2010 @ 12:39am Report Abuse
I'm sorry but "Chorva" will never die. it is as versatile as a lot of gay men. it doesn't show lack of logic, on the contrary my dear, it shows that the speaker is able to send out a coded message that only the intended recipient will be able to process and understand. gay lingo was clearly not meant to be used by dumb asses like you.

I get that you're trying to be funny and some of the entries ARE funny but i just wanted to raise two points:

    (1) "God did not want all his creatures to speak like they worked the night shift at Reyes Haircutters." - must you really go out of your way to demean people who are working their asses off to earn a decent living?

    (2) the remark "we'd all have naturally bleached, over-gelled hair. That, plus perennially raised collars." is way off point. i think you've mistaken jejemons to gays.

just because pop culture or rico blanco used it does not automatically make it right. it's like saying you're gonna jump from a cliff just because rico blanco's about to do it and is saying it's good for your health. bahala ka na kung tatalon ka o hindi. of course you won't jump, but something tells me somebody's bound to do it just because rico blanco did it.

and that's the thing. it should be okay if even .0001% of the population has the capacity to think critically and not swallow what 'pop culture' mindlessly shoves down our throats. but this is a country where even company supervisors use 'haller', 'elow po', 'mehganon' and 'nownah' (ELOW PO, KINDLY PLEASE ASSIST TO FOLLOWUP ON ...)in their internal written communication thinking it somehow made them more human and cool instead of the pompous, tight-assed, conservative bores (like me) who insist on straight-no nonsense-zero cuteness communication. he thing pop culture is very successful with is showing how easily the average person can be duped into believing, buying, and acepting what it wants you to accept.
  • Fat Cheeks Jan 03 2010 @ 09:24am Report Abuse
Rico Blanco used "AYUZ" as a title for his new single, and he's definitely NOT a schmuck.
These words are part of POP culture, they're like the Black Eyed Peas or Britney Spears.
Bahala na kayo if you'll use them or not.

languange is dynamic not static...what's the big deal?

kung maniniwala tayo dito baka kung magsalita tayo ngayon parang tulad pa nuong mga pelikula nuong 1950's haha!

there are people who enjoy the flexibility afforded by the word "text-text". At this day and age when we don't need to send smoke signals to the next mountain to communicate, "txt-txt" is a very convenient way of setting up flexible meeting points and meeting time. But of course, it is an assault to an elitist ears.

  • sharkey Nov 29 2009 @ 10:30am Report Abuse
there are other equally st*p*d expressions, especially in this text-ridden world we live in. grrr! but omg is the one that really pisses me off!

  • wala lang Nov 26 2009 @ 06:26pm Report Abuse
Napaka-fundamentalist naman ng article na ito kahit na may kasamang humor. Ang wika ay buhay kaya lahat ng bagong salita o expression na nalilikha ay valid. Hindi lahat ng tao ay magkakatulad at pareho ang paraan ng pag-iisip kaya kung may mga taong nagsimulang gumamit ng mga expressions na nakalista, wala tayong karapatang husgahan sila.
  • belat Nov 26 2009 @ 12:55pm Report Abuse
Language evolves... that's a fact... and you are no one to stop the evolution of language..

we will not have the language we have today if those you call "dumb ass" did not creatively designed words... so mind your moronic and narrow understanding..

I also encounter people who intentionally misuse punctuations like the question mark.

Like this somebody who texted me recently, "Tenx poh?" and "ok punta po ako ng sunday?"

I mean. WTF! Are you asking me a question or is he just a complete dumbass?
  • keri Nov 20 2009 @ 10:08pm Report Abuse

Nice list. If you could, please add "weh." I still don't know what it means nor what it signifies. Hahaha!
  • malfon Nov 15 2009 @ 07:25am Report Abuse
Haha. Language is created and recreated, by the people as a manifestation of their socio-cultural influences and experience. Its an expression from the grassroots, not necessarily an imposition from the theorists.

Filipinos like fun. Haha. You're trying to remove the fun out of the indigenization of foreign languages into our own. I don't think these are st*p*d per se, they're just different. Besides, the expressions we have today, were also bastardizations of British English of yesteryear by the "st*p*d" Americans.

Chillax lang you kasi masaya naman eh. :D
  • mari Nov 14 2009 @ 01:28pm Report Abuse
di pa namatay ang "in fairness"...
  • Twilight Nov 13 2009 @ 08:04am Report Abuse
I wonder why people like to add the letter H in everything? ("po" becomes "poh" and names like "mhelissa" and such) I've also been seeing a lot of "akow" for "ako" ?????!!!!
  • lobanegra Nov 13 2009 @ 06:51am Report Abuse
Loud, i have this funny feeling this will all die a natural death as time passes or somebody invents a new (but not necessarily witty) expression... remember (if u were old enough then) the expressions "to-dits", "highball" "ty-par" etc of the sixties? hardly anybody uses them now... till then oh my ears will bleed...
  • bleh Nov 12 2009 @ 09:19pm Report Abuse
Lourd, it's not nice to say that whoever invented these expressions should die of swine flu. very mean of you! i totally agree that using these expressions is a way of neglecting our language, but if people use it just for fun, what's the big deal? should we sound so perfect and well-spoken all the time? peace :)
