Lourd de Veyra: The unbearable heaviness of being 'K'

Lourd de Veyra | Published: Jan 22, 2010 - 5:05pm

K has that inexplicable power over us. The national pasttime, it seems, is not politics but the life of K, which has more twists and turns than several seasons of Lost. K, like weather in today's climate-change times, is the very embodiment of unpredictability. Sure, the constants are given. The high-pitched voice, the accent, the fashion tastes that tend to expose way too much skin than needed, etc. One thing is for sure, and that's you'll never predict what's going to happen next. Or it could be Schadenfreude, the malicious joy and pleasure we take in the fact that poor little rich girl–with all her endorsements, her media influence, and her pedigree–is always but a fleeting visitor to the gardens of lasting romantic bliss.

Our collective fascination is one that borders on perverse, but does not seem to affect her frightening power to peddle fabric softeners and a thousand other consumer products. We do not surround her. She–or at least her perennially smiling simulacra–surrounds us. From supermarkets to superhighways, her image, her likeness is omnipresent. Like carbon monoxide and karaoke, K is part of the urban environment, and with an insufferable voice, exerting an even greater power over her actual big brother, who is currently leading the rat race to Malacañang.

The alleged statement from one of the girl's relatives, "Now I know who not to vote for," does not exactly sound like a sweepingly devastating indictment against the political ambitions of K's brother. One person's opinion–whether true or not–does amplify the whole matter into a political issue. "Now I know who not to vote for" was certainly never uttered in any formal presidential forum. Certainly not by Villar, Gibo, or Dick. And I fail to see how one person's dissent can have calamitous consequences on a presidential campaign. It may, definitely, but only if K opens her mouth. And when she does, the littlest things go supernova.

But then again, that's just what exactly what we've all been waiting for. Not really for her to do something. That would be totally missing the point. What we're waiting for is for her to say something about it. Granting she really did go ballistic at Valle Verde. So what? As her hick cager husband himself said, K had every right to be angry. She da missus, after all. Some fangirl wants my publicly-known-as-very-much-married husband for a guidance counselor? It should be well within my purview to stuff five basketballs and bagfulls of health-tinapay down that fan's throat. And that's being kind. It's just so easy to shut yer trap. But what good would that do? At least for our perverse personal delectation. K only needed somebody to confide in, to be more specific, Boy Abunda plus a battalion of TV cameras in a well-lit studio. As my friend Gang wisely observed, talking to a good friend plus 92 million others must be extremely therapeutic.

You see, maybe our own lives aren't exciting enough. It may seem unfair to raise suspicions over the timing of her latest debacle with the start of her latest drama series. The life of K is infinitely more melodramatic and surreal than anything a middling ABS-CBN creative committee can concoct, even if on hallucinogens.

I should stop. There are more important things to write about.

But that's what I said to myself the last time.

Hoy Lourd de veyra- kelan ka ba mag-stop na kakagamit ng title ng ibang author? na kinokopya mo lang sa title ng libro? In this article, you got your title from the novel The Unbearable Lightness Of Being, a truly great novel by MILAN KUNDERA! You are PLAGIARIZING!!! Just google this word if you want to know more about this meaning! I'm a book worm and a book addict !!! Ba, you are a fake Lourd de Veyra, gaya-gaya ka lang pala!!! o anong say mo ngayon? I'm gagging with your being so ignorant and thinking that you are not going to be discovered. Now, buking ka na sa buong Pilipinas!!!

    It is not her...

    It is not us...

It is you Lourd, it is just you...the realization that you are secretly in love with K is upseting but not at all surprising...

Whatever K bashers think about her, it is a given that she affects them like no other. Otherwise, this article wouldn't have elicited strong arguments and counter. Anything K does or does not do, everyone listens or watches or read or imagines. That is what I call K-POWER. She's not K for nothing. No wonder, K is the no. 1 endorser this side of the world. Hate her or love her, she has all of us held by the palm of her hand effortlessly.

Uuuy! You can't seem to get K out of your mind ahh haha, (possible Lourd-K romance? Tsk ok you might want me dead pronto because of this comment :D).

But I just wonder what would happen if Lourd and K would have a personal encounter, how will Lourd react? :D

Welcome to the Philippines. We can't digest irony well. It's not in our DNA. We're satire-intolerant. Also, sadly, more and more, good grammar has become a thing of the past. It's shocking. No one can speak, write or think well anymore. It's an epidemic!
  • igeramos Jan 27 2010 @ 01:04pm Report Abuse
I'm so bored reading ill-thought out comments written in text language, even lacking in correct grammar whether in Pilipino or English and some people's failure to comprehend obvious ironic statements even when staring them in the face.

Or better still a new segment here. "Itanong mo kay Lourd". Raise the roof!!! ehehhe

Kung pati si idol na Lourd ay affected, acquitted na kaming lahat na lesser mortals!

Basta, excited na ako sa prospect na Boy Abunda gets to become the next Press Secretary (better Visayan accent than the last one at least) and Tita K (as in the one who cannot be named) is the next DSWD Secretary (siguradong may multi-million fund raising agad sa lahat ng calamity victims).

If only for that, politics becomes more bearable and entertaining. Kesa naman bwisitin tayong lahat kada umaga.

    @Stoked

    - Your words manifest your st*p*dity, and utmost ignorance. You say of progress, yet you talk like savage, you say independence - yet you are a slave of your own idiocy.

    @Lourd

    - Funny, how great your envy and condescension is, even your so called intelligence cannot stop you from writing such article. And you created exact replicas of your monstrous self in most of the readers of this blog. You can now establish the next big religion in the Philippines: "Iglesia ni Lourd".

The planet is not crazy because of Kris, it is crazy because of people like us.
  • Stoked Jan 25 2010 @ 03:09pm Report Abuse
Filipinos should stop kissing Kris\' ass! she has nothing good to say, because all she say is her self-centered opinion. Does she liberate the people with her non-sense mouth? Of course not! SNN and the Buzz or any show that she\'s in it, is garbage time.

    Dear Joey in Dubai,
what Lourd is doing is for the good of all Filipino. This blog is something very important and timely, Our country must move forward to progress and independence and put everything behind including that b**ch.
  • Fan of Lourd Jan 25 2010 @ 02:27pm Report Abuse
Then don't read it. Simple. Period.
  • Joey in Dubai Jan 25 2010 @ 02:15pm Report Abuse
    Dear Mia in Manila,

Nowhere in my comment did I say, nor even imply, that I'm a fan of Kris. Conversely, nowhere in my comment did I say, nor even imply, that I'm not a fan of Lourd's. My beef against Lourd's blog is his preoccupation with something as trivial as Kris (remember it's his 2nd blog on same subject) and I find it a waste of time for him to pour his creative juices on, and for me to read, such inanities. As he correctly pointed out, there's so much more important things out there deserving our time and attention.
  • Fan of Lourd Jan 25 2010 @ 02:10pm Report Abuse
Last time I checked there is still freedom of choice and freedom of expression in the Philippines. I love Lourd's style of writing. He is the only writer I know who is capable in uplifting a PEP topic to a higher plane.

Lourd has a different set of captured audience. Apparently, Joey is not one of them. Do not read it if you don't like it. Simple. Just read the OFW section of the Inquirer Joey.
  • Mia in Manila Jan 25 2010 @ 01:46pm Report Abuse
    Dear Joey in Dubai,

I'm a fan of Lourd de Veyra, and you're a fan of Kris (good Lord!). Likewise, don't read Lourd's posts if you can't take anyone making fun of your beloved idol. Just stick to krisaquino.com where no one will dare say anything bad about her.
  • Joey in Dubai Jan 25 2010 @ 01:29pm Report Abuse
For somebody whose gift in writing is immense and prolific and, I bet, whose creative imagination is wide and infinite, you still chose to write about KRIS AQUINO (okay, I spelled that out) even if you had second thoughts about it, that tells me something: that you are just one big HYPOCRITE! I actually don't know you from Adam but some commenters in your blog say you're famous or a literary genius (I hope not like Marlene Aguilar) and I like your writing style. But for chrissake's, there's so much more happenings in the world (Haiti earthquake, the Ivler brouhaha, Maguindanao massacre, etc) and yet you chose to write about your petty dislike of Kris and her life. Cmon man, grow up. Move on. You seem to be enveloped by envy, insecurity and jealousy of her success or celebrity or fame. Do you actually know her personally? If you don't like what you see on your TV, switch it off or change channel to CNN. Don't waste your blogspace and creativity to write something so inane. Grow up! Move on! Kris Aquino is here to stay and all you can do is turn off your TV if you're so peeved of her!

Oh no, please don't give them an idea about a KY gel ad for Allan K and James Yap. I don't want them to replace my billboard at EDSA.

  • Saatchi and Saatchi Jan 25 2010 @ 04:17am Report Abuse
The irony of life. Good idea for an ad campaign back to back. Kris for v*g*n*l antiseptic. Allan K for KY gel. James Yap will appear in both ads.

Kris in Malacañang? Be careful what you ask for. You might get it. Kris should just leave James Yap and get together with Willie Revillame instead. It would create a massive media tsunami that the entire country wouldn't know what hit them. It will be the most exciting days for the Filipinos. We will forget all the goings on in the government, the corruption... we won't even care who sits in Malacañang because we have the ultimate couple giving us the ultimate opium via the 6-hour daily telethon Wowowee: Game Ka Na Ba with Kris and Willy. As long as we hear Kris and Willy scream "1 thousand, 2 thousand, 3 thousand... 10 thousand pesos!!! Congratulations!!!" Everybody will be happy.

Another topic that would probably earn your blog a thousand comments in one day is the Marian-Dingdong romance. (Still can't get over that article at Odds&Ends, na mas mabenta pa kesa sa SPOT articles on politics and national events.)

I don't have a problem with Kris being in Malacanang. If she is the only reason why people won't vote for Noy, then they should think again. We got stuck with GMA for the last 10 years, so Kris presence should be heavenly.

K is the only celebrity we want to see in all states of her emotions. her appeal to everyone is really appaling. she got us under her palm all the time. we all love to see her open her big mouth on national television. we love to see her ups and downs in the four corners of the studio. we love to see her cry. we simply cannot ignore her omnipresence. she is the personification of what we want and what we don't want, of what she lacks and what she have in excess. she's the only celebrity we all love to love and hate at the same time. she is what she is and she's not apologetic.
