Ria Limjap on 'Miss You Like Crazy': Love and timing

Ria Limjap | Published: Feb 26, 2010 - 3:23pm
How do I say this? I've warmed up to the "watery charms" of John Lloyd Cruz. I once used that offending phrase about him, but a girl can change her mind. As I sat watching Star Cinema's post-Valentine offering Miss You Like Crazy, I was thankful that the movie is all about him. He plays Alan Alvarez, a regular guy with a good job, a pretty girlfriend, and an okay life. One day on the Pasig River Ferry, he meets the girl who will change his life forever. Bea Alonzo, that creamy-skinned leading lady du jour, plays Mia Samonte, a down-to-earth girl who falls for Alan's nice guy game. Problem: he's in a relationship with someone else. You can take it from there. I don't want to reveal too much about the plot of this "thought provoking romantic drama" (the words of Star Cinema not mine) because, er, there's not much to reveal. Its pure formula but they do develop the characters nicely, giving them back story and complete arcs. Sadly, as much as John Lloyd and Bea are popular and profitable as a love team, they are unevenly matched in acting ability. Even if John Lloyd doesn't have the kind of bone structure that the camera loves, there's something about him that is subtly convincing that he's real and vulnerable. Unfortunately, Bea Alonzo (who is undoubtedly pretty) isn't as convincing. Perhaps she relies on her prettiness a little too much? Even when she's acting "crazy" (like crying on public transportation and tossing peanuts into her mouth also on public transportation), she's still just a pretty girl acting like a fool. (See the early work of Hilda Koronel if you want a beautiful girl with acting chops to match.) I'm really not a huge fan of Star Cinema's movie titles, which inevitably use a super sappy song title as the movie's theme AND title. (It's about record sales for them because didn't Aiza Seguera and Erik Santos record the theme song and isn't it released on Star Records?) However, I appreciate their practice of casting amazing actors in supporting roles. Bembol Roco as Mia's invalid father will move you to tears by just lying there. The performances of Maricar Reyes, Jun Urbano, Noel Trinidad, and the Malaysian actor Gerald Hans Isaac are all assets for the movie. The third generation of the famous acting Mesa-Gil clan stand out, even in supporting roles the natural talent and good acting genes of cousins Ryan Eigenmann and Sid Lucero cannot be denied. My perpetual favorite Ketchup Eusebio also has a role as Mia's gay friend, and he does it with sensitivity and depth as always. But I think the real credit should go to Cathy Garcia-Molina, director of Miss You Like Crazy. She pulled off the complicated blocking of a meeting-in-traffic scene–which entailed a kalesa horse pissing in the middle of Chinatown–and a fairly tasteful love scene set against the staircase of an old house. And while the inherent cheesiness of Miss You Like Crazy cannot be avoided (much like John Lloyd's Greenwich pizza) I must admit that in the end I was absorbed by this story about love and timing. Ever the optimist, I wanted the hero to end up with the girl. I mean, why not the happy ending? These days it is increasingly rare, almost mythical, but always possible in movies. come on Kairita noh (thats your name), nakairita ka nga. bea is juzt as simple and beautiful inside.maybe not like yOU! she's an actress she will do everything what the director will tell her what to do. movie lang iyon, acting nya lang yan. iwan ko ba, baka wala ka lang alam sa sinasabing ACTINg.try mo ngang mag-artista tingan ko lang kung hindi ka bigyan na ganong role....kairita ka nga.

i agree with the writer... bea was just NOT convincing at all.. i like her p naman sana, but her acting skills really disappoint me. sorry nlang sa mga nagsasabing magaling siyang umarte... well, i can see that nag-eefort talaga xa.. pero iba tlaga ang magaling na arte sa ang-eefort lang... *wink*

I really was not a fan of the film mostly because the plot was so predictable and it was so cheesy. I love their tandem but they always have the same character in the sense that Bea is the happy one that will make John Lloyd the same. It sucks. I wasted my money and time.

There is no problem at all in stating our own opinions. Here's mine..The movie was a great masterpiece..really one of the greatest I would say. While I don't mind the writer's opinion about Bea Alonzo. Making assumptions that "Perhaps she relies on her prettiness a little too much?" is the biggest blow and really tasteless writing. It is one thing to say you are not pleased with someone's acting because that is an opinion but it's another thing to make presumptions and attack the person's ingenuity . The use of the phrase "Bea Alonzo, that creamy-skinned leading lady du jour" is such a fancy play of words that isn't appropriate. To end on a positive note..Reading this article just made me appreciate Bea Alonzo much more and how great the movie is and I can't envision anyone else to have dedicated the same caliber of acting in this movie.

Ibalik si Bea sa Betty La Fea season 2 a.k.a. Ugly Betty Pinoy version.

Wagi ka day!

"Perhaps she relies on her prettiness a little too much?"

i was one of those who didn't like the movie..i just find the above quoted line insulting on Bea's part, she wasn't superb in the movie i agree but to tell that she only relies on prettiness is just way overboard...give the girl some credit perhaps you have to watch the movie again para mas maintindihan mo yung role nya as someone trying to be ok when in fact she isn't because of her family problems..

merong actresses na mganda magdeliver pag comedy or mababaw na tossing ng peanuts lang ang instruction ng director, and i don't think there's a hidded motive here.. this is just the writer's opinion, so kung ayaw mo ung nabasa mo, why waste your time posting your comment? :p

basta for me, Bea didn't do much justice sa role nya.. and I regretted watching this film sa movie house, pang pirated na dvd lang pala tong movie na toh.. 30php lang.. :) my fault, i expected too much sa "Star Cinema" urgh!

I think the Bea fans can be a bit over the top. For instance, in the movie review posted on PEP. It was a positive review, overall. It so happened there's one paragraph dedicated to John Lloyd and another paragraph dedicated to Maricar Reyes. Both praises.

Suddenly the comments box was flooded with Bea fans complaining why there was no special paragraph for Bea. And again, they accused the writer of being biased against Bea. If the writer didn't find anything noteworthy for this particular actor and found something noteworthy for another actor, what's wrong with that?

In this case, this Ria Limjap didn't like Bea's acting. But it was a positive movie review overall.

I saw the movie and though Bea was just alright. Not fantastic, but alright. Some good moments, some terrible ones. But she was just alright with me. Good enough. My friends thought otherwise. They'd go as far as saying "pangit ang acting ni Bea".

A professional needs to be able to take all feedback: both good and bad.

And if Bea is just like her fanatics here and can't take the bad with the good, then I don't see how she can get better as an actor.

oi sister stella, in all honesty, love ko yang female lead sa name mo before bea became katrina argos in KTKH.
neweis, its better to give thanks to Him in anything and everything than to curse. that's what i learned from long time ago, spread the word as they say, what's wrong with it. are you a Christian?

imo! i found the writer's review offensive so we tried to come to bea's defense, nothing wrong with it. this is a free country. we can voice out our opinion too. i think the writer is unfair and her reviews inappropriate. if direk lauren, coney reyes, jlc, et al found bea's acting as brilliant to superb so there's something wrong w/ her reviews. that's all.

What kind of a close-minded, non-progressive, non-freethinking country is this? Can't anyone review a movie anymore without being accused of doing a demolition job, demoralizing the moviegoers or invoking God just because the fanatic followers of an actress took offense over her being critiqued? Criticism is a necessity to improve one's craft. Criticism begets progress. How can anyone get better if no one gives feedback?

At least Shaina looks like a real girl while Rofa looks like a manyikang tumatanda, and laos na impersonator / cross-dresser / transvenstite with a bad fashion sense (I know it's an oxymoron, I have trannie friends who have far better and excellent taste in fashion). I know this has nothing to do with this review. This is of my alcohol induced keyboard anger. Ewan ko ba ang bigat ng dugo ko sa mga Gutierrez. if the writer has the right to criticize stars & their acting, so we can too, equal rights eh. i think everyone in showbiz knows how brilliant an actress bea is except this writer. if i may say so jlc and bea brings out the best in each other as far as acting is concerned. as i qoute jlc, bea make his work easier [actingwise]

The writer finds fault w/ the female lead scenes like crying in a public transport and the tossing of peanuts in a ferry boat... whose ideas are these anyways, of course to the captain of the ship... then the said writer said the real credit goes to the director. so contradictory for how can you give full credit to the director when you criticized that the female lead didn't act accordingly to your point of views.

anyways this writer didn't like bea so she gave a very poor performance report, but gave good remarks to everyone in the cast except one, i wonder who's her real pet in the female lead category, that i have to discover in the days or months to come.

I beg to disagree, Ria Limjap - whoever or whatever you are. Bea did great in the movie because if she didn't I should have not felt her acting or presence. While it is true that JLC is a great actor(who has always been), it takes a good partner/co-star to bring out the best in a scene. And I believe Bea contributed in the motivation JLC needed in all the scenes in the movie. I don't want to elaborate much, basta Bea did great in the movie. Just a curious thought mr./ms. writer (whatever), who do you think could have played the role best in her generation?

  • John Lloyd fan, not so Bea Feb 28 2010 @ 05:41pm Report Abuse
The writer was spot on with Bea, she is in fact just a pretty girl trying to act. But if I have to be fair, she did good on One More Chance; I don't know why she can't pull off a bubbly, crazy role. It looks so awkward, I wanted to fast forward the scenes If only I can. Her supposed quirky laughs, weren't, uhhmm, quirky, it was the kind of laugh you force as a mode of sarcasm and mockery - but she wasn't sarcastic and mocking, was she? I don't even want to comment on John Lloyd, because the guy has proven it a lot of times - he can act, and he can magically transform a bad movie to great once he starts crying. Especially when he smiles, as he is crying, it looks so sincere, and when shook his head by the end as Bea takes the seat next to him - you get the happiness, it's like he said "Oh my f*cking God you're here I'm so happy I can't believe it" in just mere two-round shaking of his head. He's THAT good.

As for the "violent" reactions, so to speak, to this write-up. It is a movie review, uhmmmm, you're supposed to review a movie? Just wanted to say that, in case, you don't get it. So if Ms. Limjap thought Bea doesn't know how to act, and that the movie title is basura, and as she said about the plot, "there's not much to reveal," then she is so rightfully entitled to, because this is her column, and that's what's on her mind. For what it's worth - she was right about everything. Not to mention she put it in great, stylish writing, so if you can't appreciate that. Oh well, sorry.

And not because Ms. Molina directed Bea, it doesn't mean she hit all the right "notes" because if that's her maximum, what's a director gotta do? She can only do so much, y'know. And ofcourse Cathy Molina would applaud Bea, she is her actress, who in the world would criticize her own cast? Get into the tautology club :-)
  • Salie Feb 28 2010 @ 02:10pm Report Abuse
@esep esep: well it's just normal to defend the actress because she did a good job in the movie, contrary to how the writer described it. she delivered more than what was expected of her. for whatever reason the writer has, she missed dissecting the film in its deepest aspects to come up with a fair review. that's all, bow.ü

@Kairita noh : perhaps you can dig deeper into one's acting prowess instead of being biased only because Lloydie is good-looking. it is undeniable that the movie was a work of art, something people of shallow taste cannot appreciate. Despite the bubbly character of Bea in the movie, she never sounded irritating. she has given more than justice to the given role. so maybe you can revisit the movie and watch with more heart and better intellect. it is after all an intellectual film.ü i bet you will enjoy it!

exactly, i am very insulted for those people, writers, directors, co- actors who have always been vocal of their admiration of bea's acting. with her very first soap, KTKH, she became the youngest nominee for a best actress award. anong tawag mo diyan, just plain pretty face acting like a fool? ang magsinungaling para sa isang artista na alam mo namang meron siya, hindi gawain yan ng isang responsableng writer, gawain yan ng isang bayarang writer.

I'm not part of a demo job, before I get accused. It's just an observation. Hindi fluid yung characterization niya.

I also didn't like the bed scene. It's more lustful than heartfelt.

But John Lloyd...i've always liked John Lloyd. He can really breathe life into the characters and takes you on a journey.

Sid Lucero was good in the movie. And Ketchup Eusebio reminds me of someone I know in real life.

Maricar Reyes, even if she's irritatingly OC, you can sympathize with the character. Bagay siyang sosyal if not for her weird wig. Sa totoo lang distracting yung wig. They could've chosen a nicer wig. Kasi kung sosyal ka talaga, you'd probably get a decent hairstyle.

Trailer pa lang irritating na si Bea. Her "acting" is hysterical, whiny, and contrived. Walang pinaghuhugutan, unlike John Lloyd's acting which is more soulful and easy lang. The emotions come out from within, in subtle nuances that come across as natural and instinctive. Bea needs to go to more acting workshops and gain more life experience, or, like the author says, she will continue to do role after role as a "pretty girl acting like a fool."

One thing that I love about Star Cinema movies is they show the nice places in the Philippines (restaurants, tourist spots, etc. etc.) and the good life a la Viva Films.

I live abroad and after each movie, I hear the viewers say: Saan yon? Maganda pala doon? Kain kaya tayo doon?

Each person may have their own opinions and biases. So I write to say my own opinion too. I too disagree with yhour review, as even Cathy Molina had all praises for Bea who clearly followed what she wanted her to do. Inspite of her pretty looks, she was able to do the role as she was instructed to and for me she was really convincing. Sorry!

EXCUSE me to writer, i disagree w/ ur reviews on bea, if acted like one as u noticed, it was the director's instructions, ok! tell her why did she let bea do that scene?
