Lourd de Veyra to GMA: "We will miss you, O Great Leader!"

WE WILL MISS YOU, O GREAT LEADER
(It's hard to let go when you won't say goodbye)

Barring any surprise coup attempts, assassination plots, and calculated outbreaks of urban terrorism and sabotage on a scale wider than Aiko Melendez's waistline, on June 12, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo marks her final Independence Day celebration. The sheer thought–and the glissando of the word "final"–brings tears to my eyes. The nation has every right to eat, get ridiculously drunk, and do cartwheels to the tune of Kool & The Gang's "Celebration." Or "Auld Lang Syne" set to a cheesy but fun synthesized disco beat. She steps down on June 30, but each day, very minute, every seeming infinite second toward it plods like a painful European art house movie. You know–the kind where absolutely nothing happens for vast stretches of time, and the ugly protagonist simply stares into the gray, empty distance, where you can hear eternity dropping with each arctic raindrop, over every solitary acre of wheat, over… ah punyeta. Basta, ang tagal.

Right now there are television ads trumpeting her achievements, which are mostly centered around the phantasms of infrastructure and development. And it ends with the triumphant declaration that GMA has built more bridges, highways, that sort of shit than all three previous presidents combined.

"Sa totoo lang" TV ads trumpeting GMA's achievements.

Sa totoo lang: for someone who's on the defensive, for someone who has to uphold her honor, it's remarkably… lame. For someone who needs to prove her legitimacy and worth, it's not really trying hard. It has none of the grave desperation of that Manny Villar ad featuring his weeping mother. It feels like a compendium of low-resolution stock footage from the Philippine Information Agency.

We will miss the voice. That voice, which contains about the same grace and elegance as scissors biting into through rusty metal sheets. If the spirit of patriotism and hope is a triumphantly priapic erection, her voice one effectively deflates it.

Which is what's noticeably missing from those ads. Note that those "Legacy" ads do not even contain a millisecond's worth of her voice? Her image appears only two exact seconds-- just before the ad ends. As if it were an afterthought. Maybe the makers of the ad were wise: the point of any TVC is to sell something, and in the case of Little Miss Philippines Popularity 2001-2010, her virtual absence is definitely a virtue. None of the familiar images we've grown so quite disgustingly familiar for the past nine years: no speeches, no scenes of her wearing a hard hart, no clips of her kissing babies or sitting in front of a call-center computer. It's a lose-lose situation. Hence, the footage of trains, boats, highways, and flyovers get more airtime in that mercifully short ad. It's a bitch of problem when you have an undesirable product and an even more undesirable endorser. But it's not merely a case of people not wanting the product, like those ads for fighting-cock feeds and livestock supplies on Sunday on IBC 13.   There's a big difference between simple indifference and pure, unmitigated loathing.

Nine years is a long time, especially for a supremely unpopular leader. Nine years is almost a generation. A child nine years of age is already expected to know certain things, like watch violent cartoons, demand his PSP when bored, and sing lyrics from Glee and that stupid Villar jingle.

I know there's just two more weeks to go but the excitement is killing me. Afternoon of June 12 at the Quirino Grandstand will see Gloria Macapagal Arroyo mouthing off a roll-call of her achievements–to the tune of P10 million. It's Independence Day, all right. Independence–from her.

In contrast, the Aquino-Binay proclamation in Congress earlier this week beamed with so much hope and optimism-- the kind rarely heard in that chamber unless encouraged by bagfuls of cash. There was such collective excitement and glow, and it's not just reflected off the heads of Noynoy and Boy Abunda.

Here are some of the things we will miss:

The mole: Psychedelic experiment: Take five hundred milligrams of LSD and stare closely at Gloria's nunal.

The voice. If we are to believe that saying about the human voice as proof of the existence of God, then the world is fucked.

Did I mention the voice? Do not attempt to listen to it while attempting aforementioned psychedelic experimentation.

The height–or lack thereof. You'd think that in nine years we'd all be so blasé about this thing. But we can't help it. That's always the glaring element you notice when she's on TV.

The befuddled, confused, and belligerent spokespersons and press secretaries. Everyone from Bunye to the late Serge to Lorelei to the Gary Olivar, GMA's own rottweiler. When the shit hits the fan, the thrill lies in watching them defend the boss with straight faces that make you want to ask, "How painful was it when the doctor removed your sense of shame?"

The lame, self-serving pronouncements. To be found in almost every corner of the country that has a road, a bridge, an electric post and wire, and just about anything with a surface. "Salamat, Presidente Gloria para sa footbridge na ito" is just one of these endearing signs. This is not to mention the blown-up posters on the walls of the LRT and the MRT as well as on the plastic tickets.

The scandals, the controversies. The Arroyo administration has given birth to entire   cottage industries of commentators and gadflies, the way the Bush administration became a goldmine for late-show writers and standup comedians in the US.   As one beerhouse favorite rhapsodizes: "How will live without you/ I want to know…"

The art of dedma.
An artform she has perfected. It is the fine art of letting all the ZTE-NBN and fertilizer fund scams slide over her like fried egg over Teflon.

The rallies. Against her, of course. In the course of nine years, militant groups have been saved up gargantuan supplies of anti-GMA paraphernalia. What happens now to those cute but flammable   papier-machie effigies with the oversized overbites and exaggerated nunals?

    wag kang magalit. heheheh

We must stop being proud of ourselves, masyado tayong nagbubuhat ng sariling upuan... Di natin kayang tanggapin ang kamalain kaya di natin nasosolusyunan.

Working Class din ako... and I obsereved how pinoy works, compared to japanese people, or chinese people.

Really? so you believe in the mantra that the POOR SHALL ALWAYS BE WITH US? I'm not saying that Noynoy should perform a miracle stamping out poverty from the Philippines forever. This is accorded to dead, great leaders like Mao Tse Tung (The Chairman), Kim Il-sung (Eternal President of the Republic), Adolf Hitler (Herr Führer), Benito Mussolini (Il Duce), and Joseph Stalin (The People's Commissar).

Are you trying to say that Gloria Macapagal Arroyo deserves such an honorific admiration?

to say that Filipinos are lazy is an insult to me who works 12 hours a day, cares for his family for an additional 8 hours and only sleeps for 4 hours on weekdays. while there are some who really lack discipline, please don't generalize.

    @El Gordo

eradicating poverty is an illusion that you have to dispel from your mind. poverty cannot be eradicated. even first world countries have some populations living below the poverty line. In America, go down south to the predominantly black fishing communities and you'll see abject impoverishness. it's just that the government has an efficient system to support these people to meet their basic needs.

Filipinos are eager to write the history of Arroyo’s regime. She claims to have brought RP to the verge of first world status. That’s opposite reality. Co-opting all institutions  the legislature, judiciary, local officials, the military, even the church and the press  she brought us to the brink of a failed state. RP under her was ranked Asia’s most corrupt. Divine hand arrested the nation’s slide. With Arroyo ending, public hope and consumer confidence are at the highest ever.

There are lots of programs given for the poor. Like TESDA education.

From my personal experience, my family and I used to feed the poor here in Muntinlupa. My lola never did that again. At first the parents got the food, after a while the kids would be the ones to get the food because their parents were resting. Then my lola would ask the children why they couldn't ask their parents to get the food for them. Then they would answer, "Kasi po tinatamad po sila." PATHETIC.

I don't expect Noynoy to do anything. 'Cause from his press interviews, he can't even gain my respect.

Cory was given the choice to lose all our debt, but she gave in to her pride and said no. She could have at least maintained the LRT and not let the columns near the Central Terminal station have cracks. She could have done something and not throw all Marcos administration projects away. She could have resolved the power crisis by not mothballing the Bataan Power Plant.

Oh come on. We are lazy. We depend on Wowowee and Eat Bulaga to give us money instead of working hard on the streets. Come on, there are lots of success stories here in the Philippines. However, the laziness stories surpass them. Look at the government, aren't they just f*cking lazy? The government represents our people. If they suck, well we suck too.

    Another thing. Filipinos are lazy.

After this comment, I expect a ton of comments to come to me. Why? Because we cannot f*cking take criticism.

The poor people cry of being poor and having nothing to eat, but they lie down and sleep. They don't work. You can't expect the government to do everything for you.

So if you think the government is corrupt, look at your practices at home. Do you try to get more to eat than your relatives? Do you try to get more TV or computer time? Do you try to get more of anything?

    I hope I'm not being mean. :)

    We shouldn't be biased.

Just because she did something wrong doesn't mean we should forget about her projects. She really is an infrastructure icon even if she stole money. She improved the economy even if she gave houses and other riches to her allies.

Hey, Cory led us to freedom, but she f*cking didn't do anything. Ramos was accused of cheating, but he gave us the Skyway, and he stopped the blackouts. Erap was convicted of plunder, and... Well that's it.

Filipinos always have this habit of noticing ALWAYS what is wrong. We should stop this, and learn to appreciate the good things. Nobody's perfect. Especially not our Presidents.

God bless you, Lourd! I hope your judgment isn't clouded by your deep hate for GMA! Hehe :)

The Philippines experienced the highest GDP growth in years. The Philippines also had the highest increase in poverty in years. There is a disconnect.

It only means that the beneficiaries of the positive growth did not re-invest enough in the Philippines.

While I may give a few credit to GMA. Most of the credit go to our OFW's - our real heroes.
  • sboy Jun 11 2010 @ 08:21am Report Abuse
@deepscrew... That is only my point of view. If you think otherwise then you can raise your argument with a solid concrete statement and not just some utter nonsense comment. I believe the foundation she set up for our country saved us from really crashing during the 2008 economic recession. In 2008, only 4 Asian countries experienced positive GDP growth -China, India, Vietnam, and us. Other strong Asian nations like Japan, Singapore, Korea, etc. experienced their worst GDP drop in years. One perfect reason why we survived is the boom in our BPO and BTO industries, which was fully supported and pushed by GMA during her early years as president, as more companies are investing in outsourcing to cut further costs. I believe only a few individuals would have been able to achieve a positive GDP growth under his/her watch in '08, and we were really lucky that our president was one of them.

We're on the internet and we're at least middle class. I do not know who the people who voted for Erap (both times) and FPJ are, but I feel that someone should ask them about their decision; what is their situation, what made them think that Erap or FPJ was the best decision at the time, etc. I bet I wouldn't be surprised to here one of them say "100 daw kung boboto si FPJ, papahiramin ka pa ng cellphone para kunan ng picture ung balota". And with a better understanding of their situation, I would probably also understand why they went for the Php100, because I won't. But once again, I don't know sh*t balloon about the people who voted for Erap or FPJ, but I really wish I did. I'm glad that the new call center industry has contributed a lot to the growth of the middle class but it's still not about us. We do not represent Filipinos.

This previous election, I voted for Noynoy, the one six years ago, I voted for Gloria. Why? Because these candidates had the best chances of winning over FPJ or Erap. So crucify me if you wish but I didn't want FPJ or Erap to win even if it meant that I had to vote for Gloria or Noynoy. Gloria may have sucked but FPJ would have sucked even more.

Neil - as far as I know RORO project is really not a presidential project. as far as I know matagal na nag Roll on Roll off ang mga barko as long as malaki and it has a capacity na magload ng mga vehicles even in a small province like Marinduque.. What more pa sa mga maunlad na provinces like Cebu. And I know people na matagal na nagbibiyahe ng ganyan. Those are public transport na hindi nadidiktahan ang fares ng mga government. Why nagmura ang fares? Kasi for the past years marami ng lumubog na barko from the south so people are losing trust sa pagtravel thru Sea. And with the cheap fares from Cebu Pacific and Zest airs.. It's competition men! and not Gloria's legacy to us Filipinos. It's Gokongwei of cebu pacific you should be thankful of.

Nice article. Throwing in my own two cents, I think one thing we as a people need to finally realize is that it is not okay to settle for less or for just "good enough".
I guess it's a Filipino attitude to think "Being 10% honest is fine, doing the right thing 10% of the time is good enough." Well, no, it's not. We need to stop being satisfied by half-assed efforts and we should never be okay with a government official, what more a PRESIDENT who only gives 10%. Demand more. Demand 110% 24/7. Our government works FOR us, but only if we inisist upon it and only if we cooperate alongside them.
    End of rant. Thanks.

@kerara: Ma'am/Sir, I've spent Gloria's nine years in office, from EDSA II until today exposed to every single thing that was thrown at her, her allies and her family. I'm not exactly a fan of the President, I just look at things objectively. Like many of us, I do doubt the legitimacy of her term; however, if we'd put it into perspective, where would we be with FPJ as president? Does Erap ring a bell?

I do suggest you look up some sources. Infrastructure is one of PGMA's base economic solutions, and the fact that those infrastructure projects became what they are today is proof that this president has political will, and balls-- despite the controversies.

@Deepscrew: Do you know the difference between real achievements and what you call "bukol" projects? If there are, anyway, the projects came about, happened, and are now in use. Despite the massive funds pocketed. Whoever presidentiable you did support in the recently concluded elections, do you honestly, fully believe that that person is immune to the temptation of money? The Aquinos aren't saints. Neither are the Teodoros, the Villanuevas, Madrigals, Gordons; nobody is a saint.

Put yourself in a position where you can earn a lot of money through power, with the minimal chance that you'll be caught. I dare you; what do you think would you do?

Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone :)

Can't wait to see her step down. I want to see her behind bars. Or maybe if justice cannot be served in our ordinary courts, then maybe in a kangaroo court where she will be judged guilty as charged. I hope she will be punished in a most inhumane way, like feeding her to the crocodiles. I just hope that the Noy-Bi administraion will have the political will to pursue case against her. She and her family should rot in hell!!

I agree completely tonyrom. We all obviously know her faults but I have nothing but respect for that small woman. Despite all the shortcomings she, and especially her family, did to the country, I'd like to thank her even just for the other side of the coin. Which side shines more is open for debate, but I believe her side shined the most compared to the last three leaders we had. Through her leadership and economic programs, she almost singlehandedly saved our country from the recent economic recession. So thank you GMA for all the work you've put into over the past 9 years. Despite all the criticisms, coup attempts, controversies, and whatnot, you are still on my good side=)
  • Dhex Jun 10 2010 @ 05:51pm Report Abuse
The problem was legitimacy and trustworthiness (or seeming lack thereof). She wanted the presidency so badly that she went back on her word and ran despite having publicly declared that she wouldn't. Regardless of your motives, especially in the political climate of the time, doing that just doesn't look good.

We could have lived with it, but she compounded this by *cheating.* (There's nothing else to call "Hello Garci.") We mostly went along with it, likely because
    1) some of us were just relieved FPJ didn't get to become president (better the devil we know than the devil we don't); and
    2) some of us were so exhausted from the disappointment of EDSA II and EDSA III. "We've got a president," we rationalized, "Why rock the boat now?"

The effect was that she wound up focusing more on *her image* and her (rightfully outraged) critics than on her job. Her husband aka "Dreamboat/Shipwreck" didn't help (Jose Velarde, Meet Jose Pidal).

She probably meant well, and the decisions she made leading up to her "reelection" were probably calculated risks. The problem remained though and would haunt her popularity ratings until her term ended. Could anyone have really fully trusted Gloria with 6 more years of collecting his taxes and affecting his life? Especially when she's proven that she will cheat, lie, ramrod unsavory deals in the name of "It's for your own good, Pilipinas?" --when even *that* is questionable?

I'm done getting mad at her: it won't bring my tax money or my ex girlfriend back. I'm just cautiously relieved she'll go.

Ika nga ni JFK, Don't ask what your country can do for you, BUT ask yourself what you can do for your country".

I'm not a fan of GMA nor do I adore some of her actions and questionable deals.

In a personal level though, I'm still thankful of her RORO project. I was born in Camiguin, grew up in Cagayan de Oro and now works in Cebu. With RORO, it's really easy to travel from Cebu, Bohol, Camiguin and Cagayan. And it's not as expensive as before. Another GMA program that I've witnessed is GMA's TESDA scholarship.. I once enrolled- in a 6-month animation crash course. Out of 35 students, I'm the only one who paid, my classmates were all GMA scholars.

I believe in facts derived by direct observation. These are my direct observations.

There are tons of issues that GMA and his administration has faced. That's really sad. Don't get me wrong, I didn't like the issues that came out (Hello Garci, ZTE, etc.) but I also can't judge them base on what I see/heard/read through media outlets. We know how mediamen works these days as evident in the last 2010 polls.

I don't admire GMA nor do I hate her.
