Hostage Horror: Remembrance of Things F*cked

Published: Aug 26, 2010 - 4:26pm

TV is full of stupid things. It also full of horrible stuff. But the genuinely stupid and certifiably horrible seldom happen in the same beat. Likewise, many instances of stupidity allow for tolerable parameters, like novelty songs and some showbiz talk shows where people answer questions by quoting passages from Roxette songs.

Corruption in government is horrible, but only stupid officials get caught. The notion of primetime news horror also covers our steady diet of motorcycle accidents and vehicular crash sites (with extreme closeups), police torture videos, mutilated bodies fished from esteros, incest involving minors, etc. But there is nothing worse than a confluence of stupidity and horror unfolding right before our very eyes. Like watching a big, dumb bear slowly--very slowly--traipsing into a metal trap. Only w0rse.

All these are horrifying. But what we see are merely end results. What we do not see is the process, and we'd rather have it that way, thank you. In the Asunscion torture case, we'd prefer to skip the part where the cops subdue the suspect to tie a string around his penis. Their brevity dilutes our revulsion. But take note that they remain horror stories condensed into bite-sized pieces--sanitized, trimmed of excess gore, with just the right sprinkling of pixels to conceal the nasty portions.

Which is not what happened on Monday at the Quirino Grandstand. We were witnesses to the entire carnage right from the very beginning to the blood-soaked end. Videos of dead bodies are something we see every day. But it is another matter to see those dead bodies as living, breathing, and even smiling and waving human beings just four hours before.

Even more horrifying is what we cannot see on the screen. Horrifying is the absolutely disturbing lack of movement behind the curtains. Horrifying is what seemed like an eternity anticipating the emergence of survivors; tense are those seconds when the camera held on to the dark, suddenly silent emergency door. Endless re-viewings of the incident--as well as fresh, unreleased footage--do nothing to desensitize us. Horrifying is the stark image of a hand cuffed to the bus door, and after the sound of gun shots, the trembling door, and that hand slips away and vanishes. Only the handcuffs remain visible. That was the first hostage killed--a thin, young man in a gray shirt. Even without the visuals, the audio recordings are even more disturbing: the hysterical voice of the hostage-taker, the gunshots, a loud, ugly thud, the frightened screams of passengers uncovered by with the hiss of radio static.

Horrifying are the images of the aftermath. The inside of the bus, littered with broken glass, shattered windows and their cobwebs of cracks. Twisted bits of metal. The untouched styro packs of Jollibee on the floor. A child's doll. That windshield. That door, which had once upon a time seemed so impregnable.

Stupid and horrifying is assuring yourself that nothing is going to happen--that this has happened before, and, after all, for the past few hostage-taking incidents in the Philippines, the endings have always been nothing like a Chuck Norris movie. With Bong Revilla issuing heroic press statements. Horrifying is hearing Erwin Tulfo tell you that it took a non-member of the Manila Police District--GMA 7's Raffy Tima--who told the SWAT officers that there was an emergency exit door on the side of the bus.

Horrifying is our helplessness in the face of inflamed opinions about our race: indolent and incompetent. Angry Hong Kong will rail that no wonder we're a nation of servants and not leaders. After August 23, 2010, we will forever be stereotyped as a country of fat, bumbling policemen who could barely fit into bullet-proof vests, who move with the grace of two-week-old lard, and who cannot even swing a hammer with dignity. And to think: how we howled when all Chip Tsao did was write pointed satire. While we let armed strangers climb onto our buses and kill Chinese tourists. Monday's incident will cement our seemingly collective ineptitude--a stupidity as patent as jeepneys driving at night sans headlights, or drunk-racing on scooters without helmets, or crashing ten-wheeler trucks into concrete barriers, or routinely sending buses down ravines.

Horrifyingly stupid is posing beside the Hong Thai bus for souvenir pictures then uploading it on your Facebook account--horrifying if only for the sheer insensitivity and thoughtlessness of the gesture. Especially if you happen to be a member of the Philippine National Police.

Stupid is relying on investigations for answers and closures. The definition of "investigation" in the Philippines means to "forget the fuck about it." From Ninoy Aquino's assassination to the Marcos loot to ZTE to the Fertilizer Fund Scam to the Maguindanao Massacre, no investigation in the Philippines has ever yielded encouraging results.

Both horrifying is government's deployment of euphemisms like "lapses," "defects," "glitches." Horrifyingly stupid is Malacaņang's gall to declare the incident an isolated case, even if flags on both countries are flying half-mast. Horrifyingly stupid is insisting that the event should not be seen as reflective of the general peace-and-order situation. Which completely misses the point. What Monday's incident proved was that the people sworn and tasked to protect are tragically incapable of doing so--and that they might even be the same threats to our safety. Not to mention our genitals.

@Inah: This comment may be a bit late, but do you realize that the sorry state of our country is due in no small part to the way your mind works? Whatever you do you cannot deny who and what you are. By the way, why on earth, and what did you do for this country that gives you the right to judge MY people for the acts of a few??? Warts and all, this is still my country: LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT!!!!rnBy the way, let's see you settle down in another place. If you yourself cannot accept who and what you are, do you honestly think that other people will ever fully accept you? Good luck to you, ma'am.rn

what has happened has happened and we cant turn back the clock..Pnoy has accepted all the responsibility but this is not enough..PNP officials should be held accountable and heads should roll because of their incompetence..lessons should be learned and similar incidents in the future should be handled better..let us all move on and pray for a better Philippines!

Last weekend I watched The Taking of Pelham 123 in HBO and the situation is similar to the hostage crisis on Aug 23. The big catch was there were 4 hostage-takers and they're demanding for $10M! I realized that the solution is really that simple - give whatever the man demands and itaga sa bato hindi yan mananatili sa bus forever! hayaan lg syang iwan ang mga hostages at makatakas, and when there's no holding back, do whatever it takes to hunt the man down! I really don't know what I'm missing kung bakit hindi pa maibigay ang gusto ni Mendoza. May tinatago ba ang PNP na ayaw nilang mailabas ng ganun na lang?!? That made me really think.

Props to you Lithium, you said it right. Race is a given, you can't do anything about it, so Let It Be! What we can aspire for to erase the humiliation and embarassment is for REDEMPTION. Let us redeem ourselves by doing the RIGHT THING!

The incident, incompetence, st*p*dity, tragedy was shameful... but it doesn't have to end in disowning your own race..you are what you are...even if you strip off your skin, dye your hair, change your name or nationality. It's in your blood..best we can do is start with ourselves, as Filipinos.. we have an obligation to prove to the world that we are worthy to be recognized.

To Inah and to all the haters out there - if you are not proud to be a Filipino then you can't be proud anywhere else kahit magpapalit ka man ng citizenship. You can't own something or be something na hindi ka naman talaga. You will just fool yourself. Try to do something good for your country and countrymen even just in small ways then your views will change.

I'm no longer a Filipino but I'm still proud to declare my origin to anyone who asked whether it's in Europe or U.S. that I'm originally from Philippines. My daughter is also proud of her origin as half-Filipino. Tragedy like this happens everywhere like in Mexico, Colombia, Pennsylvania & New York (yes U.S.!) Germany, Britain etc. It is horrific and shocking every time a tragedy like this happens. To declare being ashamed to be a Filipino is just plain obvious that you're never proud to be one anyway. By the way, I feel safer in Manila than in the middle on NY or Pittsburgh or London.

Somebody please enlighten me. We all know that Filipinos are recognized abroad as hardworking and efficient workers. How is it possible that many Filipinos are failing to see this?________________About PNP, it is not all bad news. At least we already know it needs alot of changes, which is the first step. Maybe changing the key officers and providing better training and equipment are some of the changes required for our objectives. The moment we effect these changes, things will obviously be better. Our PNP may not be the best force at the moment, but I still believe it can still recover provided we give them a chance. If we do not believe the PNP can recover, clearly we are already part of the problem. MABUHAY ANG PILIPINO!!!

@dali, i agree that indolence and incompetence have sadly become national traits. but i think it needs to be stressed that incompetence has become an acceptable trait among most government staff/agencies. As Filipinos, we are the most hardworking people (abroad) and our work ethics are beyond compare. Despite what happened, I am proud to be Filipino but I am ashamed to be associated with our incompetent police force. Fire all members of the police force. Start all over again. I dream of a future where I am no longer afraid to approach a policeman when I need help.

  • whatsthefrequency Aug 28 2010 @ 11:43am Report Abuse
tanong para ke lourd: how can literature solve a hostage crisis or increase the competencies of the police force? literature has the power to influence and motivate people but in this case how can it be applied? kung ikaw ang negotiator at libro lang ang dala mo, who will you quote? kerouac? burroughs? unamuno (baka hinde)? kierkegaard?

if we're ashamed to be filipinos then we're no different from mendoza. we don't need filipinos who are only proud of their heritage because of the good things that happen. we need filipinos who can be proud about who they are and are doing something to help us regain our pride and dignity.

Kahit anong gawin natin, nangyari na ang nangyari. Hindi lang pulis ang may kasalanan. Marami pang iba. Kung gusto ninyong tumulong, stop giving comments that would only fuel "Hate" against the Philippines and it's people.

Aminin natin, we don't have enough funds to train our law enforcement. That is the problem. Hindi tayo mayaman tulad ng ibang bansa.

Kahit nga ibang bansa, nagkakabulilyaso din. Take a look at these links:

I don't think it is inflamed opinion anymore as much as it is fact. Indolence and incompetence are national traits. We can't deny it when the evidence hits us in the face every day. We regained our freedom in 1986 and have 24 years of incompetence to show for it. What can we do to fix it? What do other nations do to move forward?

"I came to the conclusion that in spite of all the things the Philippines has going for it, its people didn't demand enough of themselves, or of their government. what's more horrifying: riding a bus in Manila and being taken hostage or shopping in HK's Mong Kok district and having a bottle of acid thrown at your head from a condo rooftop? we all go crazy but the difference is, Filipinos go crazy for a reason. The Chinese loonies who throw acid from buildings don't have a reason at all to do it.

I always look forward to reading Lourd's articles. I always learn something. He is intellectually stimulating and articulate in both English and Filipino.

I don't think the Filipinos or the younger generation are apathetic or disensitized. With all the opinion given on this tragic tragic event it shows that we are still a nation that cares.
We will always voice out how we feel or what we think.

I am deeply saddened with this tragedy and there should not have been loss of innocent lives. We can never bring those back. We should just learn from this. Hopefully something good will come out of this dark moment.

I do not want to loose my hope but somethin g has to be done. We are in a period of change and it starts with me.
