Shut Up, It's Not Christmas Yet!

Lourd de Veyra | Published: Oct 21, 2010 - 12:05pm

I don't care if it's 65 days or three centuries to go before Christmas. We'll deal with Christmas when it comes, or when my calendar says, "December" or “December 16.” And that’s only when I start to worry about shopping lists and hams and decor and all that crap. Regularly making countdowns only compounds our already brutal stress levels. Counting down the days does nothing but worsen the traffic on Edsa, which in turn sets fire to tempers, thus resulting  into breakouts of  brawls and gunfights. The countdown to Christmas swings like the proverbial Damocles sword over our heads. "Must get to Divisoria to buy shirts in bulk." "Must drive all the way to Alabang for preprod re Christmas concert." "Must swing by Toy Kingdom, get gift for annoying inaanak whose name I can't even remember, and whose parents I don't even know." "Must show up at fifth welcome dinner for the balikbayan friend for the night." By the 24th of December, you're already a walking, breathing tangle of angst and neuroses. We don’t even need Jack Skelton to give us the nightmare before Christmas. Or, rephrasing Dickens, it’s the Ghost of Christmas F*cked.

We like to boast of how the Philippines celebrates the longest Christmas in the world like it’s a genuine point of pride. Really, what does that say? Or prove? That we like to party a lot? That we’re a religious lot? Dude, we can’t even listen to the bishops when they tell us that condoms will all send us to hell. Manny Pacquiao and DJ Q-Bert are something to be proud of.  Horrendous traffic from SLEX all the way to NLEX, insane buses,  abusive cab drivers, a sudden spike in crime rates and cardiac incidents aren’t.

Of course you'll say, "What a freaking scrooge! Maybe this guy had a bad childhood." On the contrary. I consider myself lucky--often I didn't get the Tamiya R/C or that Macross set I asked from Santa, but I've had the best Christmases any child could have. I have a great family, and my father and mother never threw plates at each other over noche buena or cursed each other to a lifetime of gout and vehicular accidents. And make no mistake about it, I still look forward to every noche buena and all that warm and fuzzy crapola.

But what I protest is the premature and rather hyperbolic way in which society shoves Christmas in our faces. I know everyone loves the season and if it does promote peace, love, and happiness, then well and good. But let’s not kid ourselves: I’d swallow that peace, love, and happiness schtick anytime if those billboards only didn’t try to sell me jeans, underwear, soda, shampoo, and burgers. Merry Christmas ba kamo? Thank you, but I won’t go to your stupid mall. In this day and age, a visit to the mall has become an invitation to a nervous breakdown--from the brutal commute to the infernal traffic to even more brutal parking to the racket of people recording themselves in videoke booths. And please, “Silver Bells” in the first week of September? Seriously, a cardboard snowman, fake pine trees, and Styrofoam sleighs in the middle sweltering Edsa? And come on, “Jingle Bells” at the end of every primetime newscast?

Oh sure. Because it makes people feel good? Because it brightens the collective mood? When big businesses says “holiday spirit” and “Yuletide greetings” it really means “buy stuff.” Insidious materialism. This is nothing new. Nothing wrong with liking stuff, of course. I like stuff, too (But am too afraid of the PDEA. Kidding). But when every likes stuff, people oftentimes do things to be able to buy stuff--sometimes not very nice things, like stick an ice pick into your back and grabbing your bag and cellphone (if you were texting or calling while riding the jeep, then you deserve it, stupid). All because we put obscene emphasis on the Big Day, which according to television commercials would be incomplete without queso de bola and glazed ham. And the time comes when desperate people do desperate things just to have queso de bola and glazed ham on their table (with a small packet of shabu for the optional post-dinner celebration perhaps).

It's not Christmas yet, don't rush me. It's still two months away. Don't bludgeon me with those silly jingles and that vertiginous decor. Leave me in peace and let me celebrate October just as nature, history, and Ray Bradbury had envisioned it--somber, autumnal, teetering on the brink of helplessness and terror (October is the month of the Russian Revolution and the birth month of Nietzsche, Gandhi, John Lennon, Kim Kardashian, and Zac Efron). Let the people savor each month for all its distinct tempers and temperatures, all its highlights, plateaus, and the lowest lows. Let us not be blinded by the anticipation of the future, if in so doing we fail to grasp the meaningful pleasures of the present. This is what Zen practitioners call mindfulness--where each act, every gesture, every even should be the focal point of our energies, not as mere prelude to some other thing that needlessly consumes our attention and resources. In so doing, even the simple act of sweeping the floor or washing dishes can be elevated to the level of prayer.

And prayer is what we need. For underneath all that jingle jangle, that euphoria of tinsel,  lurk things dark, things evil that slowly gnaw away at the fraying end of our collective sanity. Shing-a-ling, hear them ring, soon it will be Christmas Day.

I thought i was alone in this kind of sentiment about countdowns before christmas. But you nailed it. This is EXACTLY my sentiment. Christmas countdowns totally freak me out. Mass media is to blame together with big (and small) businesses who want to cash in on this supposedly holy and solemn event. The countdowns tell me that if I haven't done my shopping and decorations soon, I am inadequate, bad and an incarnation of Scrooge. Thanks for this blog. At least I know I'm normal.

i love reading lourd's blogs. but i enjoy the comments more! laging may comment na nakakatawa kahit na kung tutuusin e mababaw lang pinag-kakaguluhan. ang hirap kasi lahat gusto ipakita na mas matalino sila ng kaunti sa iba. kahit sa comment lang. hehe. i don't mind the correction, though. buti na lang tapos na ang pasko.

Lourd, I'm a big fan but sometimes... you can really be a cynical ass.rnrnChristmas is the only time each year when we Filipinos are on a collective high. It is the season where we try to forget the crap that our country is in and just let ourselves get swept up by the holiday spirit. And lest you forget, there are the OFWs like me who would KILL to be home for xmas - to be hassled by the xmas traffic, to get caught up with mindless shopping, to party like there's no tomorrow. So yes, we DO look forward to the X'mas countdown. It's like counting down to get to the little bit of heaven on earth that is Xmas in the Phils!!!

@illorrnrnright on, dude! just can't understand why there are some people who strongly associate Christmas with Santa Claus wherein the entirety of Christianity and that of Catholicism should be. Hope our other bros and sisters realize that.rnrn@hubadnataornrnAbout your last statement...Hear, hear! Says everything there is to say about your comment! Cheers!

ShortcutrnrnIn short christmas can be meaningful and meaningless it depends on the persons upbringing and experiences in life. If someone says that her xmas is memorable then good for her. If someone says that xmas if damn too crappy to even bother thinking then his xmas will be almost crappy. The point is xmas is not with material things, and it is not with what you have done to your fellow. Xmas is just a word, an event, and it's up to you if you want to partake with the said occasion or not. If you're mind set is set to your own personal development and the development of others mentally, physically and spiritually, you don't need xmas to do those things that would benefit you and others. Like a shoe brand tells us, JUST DO IT.

My 2 cantavos worth:rnrn1. Consumerism is equivalent to a Christmas not worth spending for kasi pabonggahan lang ng noche buena, nang ragalong ibibigay at regalong tatanggapin.rnrn2. Reunions is equivalent to a Christmas worth spending for IF all the participants ay hindi rin nagpapabonggahan ng kanilang icocontribute sa Xmas party.rnrn3. The poor and working class is equivalent to a Christmas na laging may pagtitipid at depression lalo na kung nakikita nila ARAW ARAW sa TV ang bonggahan ng mga taong may-kaya.rnrnBeing rich is equivalent to two things:rna. You live the -BER months preparing and spending like there is no tomorrow in short pabongga rin kau sa ibang nakikipagbonggahan.rnrnorrnrnb. You stick to your old poverty stricken ways (those rich who experienced poor before) nagtitipid din and miserable because you're afraid you might lose your money too fast.rnrn4. Being Religious is equivalent to a Christmas worth spending for IF and only IF you are not the materialistic, me too attitude, consumerist bili lang ng bili, selfish "akin lang at ako lang dapat ang mayron" attitude which unfortunately affects both poor and rich basta MAY PERANG HAWAK.rnrn5. Money, Consumerist attitude, PRIDE lalo na (typo errors anyone?) selfishness and corporations make Christmas very very stressful.rnrnBUT Even though will that crap that you see in malls, snow in the tropics, and regalos galore still LOVE FOR FELLOWMAN and I mean UNCONDITIONAL LOVE to your Fellow man is the most important value that you should have christmas or no christmas.rnrnAll the typo wars between this camp and the other camp is all nonsense. Why get affected in the first place. Let us enjoy the article and let this be a reminder that ang PIKON ay laging talo.rnrnPS: sorry if it's taglish kasi half the comments are tagalog and half is english LOL.rnrn(Sardeng'yo gaminen ah! Ania kayo met!)

As someone who works as a copyriter and whose clients include some of the biggest department stores in the country, I am guilty of helping the mentality of "holiday season = capitalism hook your pointy talons on everyone's backside, drag them to the nearest mall and force them to buy silly things they don't really need" proliferate. For that, my sincerest apologies.

Kaya nga may writer at may editor. Alam ng mga totoong writer na marami silang mami-miss na mali habang nagsusulat, kaya laging may editor na nagtse-check.

I'm a huge fan of Christmas because of all the happy childhood memories that I associate with it. As a child growing up in the province, Christmas meant more food on the table, bonuses for my parents, Simbang Gabi (or madaling-araw), good weather, and NO SCHOOL for two weeks! rnrnHowever, I agree with the writer that the way we Pinoys celebrate Christmas as early as September (jeez, it's not even October!), is OA. We have better things to think about than buying stuff for people we hardly know and getting stressed over plans for the holidays. rnrnAs for the typo war (hehe!), I think that any publication (whether online or traditional) that's worth its salt should proofread its content before publishing anything. That's why newspapers hire editors and proofreaders; that's why journalism and creative writing are four-year courses (at least in UP, where Lourds graduated...I think!); that's why we are taught English grammar in school. There are standards that we should uphold. Otherwise, mag-Tagalog na lang. Ang yabang nating mga Pinoy dahil pinaka-magaling tayo kuno sa English sa Asia, so sana medyo pagbutihin naman natin ang pag-iingles. rnrnI enjoy reading Lourd's blogs although there are times when I encounter phrases that turn on the grammarian in me, but I will just blame it on Spot's editors and publishers since they are supposed to check stories and articles for any errors.rnrnYun lang po--my two cents, and Happy Christmas in advance to everyone!

Enough of this crap! We have more things to worry about than the world record setting of longest Xmas celebration like global warming/ climate change, how to survive the next mega typhoon, and esp. the next 6 years of Pnoy administration!!! just to be clear, i do admit that my writing sucks. wala pang isang porsyento ito sa kakayahan ni Lourd sa pagsusulat. ito ang dahilan kaya mas magaling ako mag-edit. wala itong bahid na malisya o ano man. si lourd, idol ko yan nung sa UST pa. and i'm sure he wouldn't mind some corrections to his article. that's how cool he is. at si promarj, tama ka: hindi ko kayang mag-edit ng Pilipino at madalas ay mali ang ispeling ko. pero kung dumalo ka sa isa sa mga workshops ni Lourd, isa sa mga sasabihin niya ay ito: write in the language that you are comfortable with. kung mas prente ka sa wika natin, eh di go (ika nga ni Kris Aquino). kung mas ok ka sa wikang Ingles, eh di go din. so hindi ko na problema yun kung mas bihasa ako sa English. also, writers like Lourd or Jessica or whoever are prone to minor errors like typos and grammar. that's why there are editors who correct their work but not cramp their style. heck, even Kerouac, Pynchon and Hemingway had editors. kasi habang nasa daloy ka ng pagsusulat, hindi mo na mapapansin ang spelling o grammar. ang gusto mo lang ay maisulat lahat ng nasa isip mo o kung ano ang nararamdaman mo. yun lang. peace.

USER NAME is not subjected to grammar and spelling correction UNLESS IT IS BEING REQUIRED! I know what you're gonna answer: "pwes ngayon nirerequired ko na dapat tama ang spelling kahit sa usernmae!" I'll then say: "Are you in the right authority to do that?" bog!

@la207rnrnI think how Christmas is celebrated in the Philippines is neither religious nor solemn, as would be expected if it were really celebrated as a religious holiday. Christmas is only an excuse for people to feel good and spend money - without feeling guilty (for the majority). And this is what Lourd is against - because it is trumpeted too early... it becomes stressful and creates pressure for people already hard-pressed to live a normal life. No amen to that, from my point of view.

Nice article but what I enjoyed reading the most are the comments! In my opinion, the early Christmas countdown is merely a marketing tactics to lure people into spending early. Or for a simple reason that we, Filipinos, are very devout Catholic or Christian. And Christmas is that ultimate and only time of the year we get to celebrate the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

seriously, i have seen people around the world celebrate long for their holidays... but they don't spend as much effort (as Pinoys preparing for) preparing for it. They spend the time enjoying the holiday itself. rnrnMasyadong consumerist ang lipunan natin yata. "In so doing, even the simple act of sweeping the floor or washing dishes can be elevated to the level of prayer." That line reminds me of St. Theresa of Lisieux (let the grammar and spelling police correct me if I spelled it wrong) who coincidentally commemorates her feast day on the month of October. I prefer to believe she became a saint because she's not the kind of person that would shove her beliefs down your throat and be a positive example instead.

ANYWAY....going back to the topic... i agree with the fact that holidays like christmas are turned into moneymaking tools by businesses, big or small. i want to be partially marxist about it (esp. in the part where i spend too much on gifts hehe) but we live in a society like ours, it's hard to escape it. but i love it that everyone's having reunions left and right, and everyone seems nicer. i don't care much for the other crazy things that come with the holidays.

Or maybe I get it. Last year, an official of the US Embassy told a reporter that English communication should be highly encouraged in the Philippines. However, according to him, it is not a good idea to tie it with social status like everything else in the Philippines. HE IS CORRECT. So when somebody corrects the spelling or grammar, it gives him or her a feeling of superiority. He or she wants to show in your face that he or she belongs to the elite class or alta sociedad.
