10 Terrifying Things in Contemporary Pinoy Pop Culture Plus One

Lourd de Veyra | Published: Oct 29, 2010 - 4:18pm

Terror is not just things with fangs and demon horns. The landscape of Philippine society and pop culture is plagued by monsters-- of all macabre shapes, sounds, and symmetries.

1. CREEPY CRAWLY: BABY JAMES

Confirmed: the horror has started early! He has inherited that terrible genetic predisposition to blab and the propensity to annoy without even trying. “I don’t like Dingdong!” the brat growled into the microphone that he grabbed from his mother. Even without the pain of a Supreme Court order, Mom was prompted a few days later to explain at length (of course!) what the baby really “meant” by, “I don’t like Dingdong.” Suffice it to say, Planet Earth shuddered.

2. SUCKERS IN OUR MIDST: IMORTAL

Vampires--in the Philippine context. Who all look like they have stylists. Suddenly, Pinoy vampires don’t look like George Estregan and Eddie Garcia anymore. And women are stretching their soft, smooth necks as offering to John Lloyd Cruz, even though Ruffa claims he’s an invertebrate. In which case he belongs to the subclass Hirudinea  and his relatives, the leeches. But when it comes to pure terror, nobody comes close to…

3. THE MANAGER FROM HELL: ANABELLE RAMA

Nobody dares not to renew a contract with her--lest you, ‘Day (or ‘Dong), be accused of being talentless, washed out, and too greedy for money. Ask Heart Evangelista.

4. THE K-POP INVASION

The ghastly hair and the unimaginable vats of hair wax and makeup! The vaguely gay costumes! The confusing androgyny! The impossibly precise, assembly line-like choreography! The choruses we can’t understand!

5. JUSTIN BIEBER

You know that scene in Total Recall where a fat lady’s face squirms and breaks in half and out emerges Arnold Schwarzenegger? That is what that blasted “Baby, Baby Ooooh” song does to me. Coming in February: a spine-tingling biopic titled Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, which includes—gasp—never-bef0re-seen home footage. Ah, the travails of living to a long, remarkably fruitful age.

6. P-NOY AND THE ETERNAL SEARCH FOR  LOVE

He walks the earth in search of his bride (and lost hair) and there are reported sightings of him dining with prospective mates at several restaurants.  The latest: the woman officially tasked to choose his clothes, straighten his collar, comb his hair, and all other little duties that involve lots of gentle touching.

7. VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED: COMELEC AND THE BARANGAY ELECTIONS—After the euphoria from the triumphant role of modern technology in May 10, this return to shockingly primitive methods--  including resolving election stalemates by tossing coins, drawing of lots, and Jack en Poy.

8. SATAN’S OWN BUSES

Cursed from the start—of the Aquino administration at least. They have fallen down ravines, crashed into each other, if not concrete barriers on Edsa and Commonwealth. They were blown up in Cotabato and became the ghastly settings for botched hostage rescue attempts in Manila.  The frightening part? The new government isn’t even a year old yet. Should you ride another Jam Transit? When will the curse end?

9. VISIONS OF ETERNAL EVIL: MANOLING MORATO

The undying purveyor of fear and vile taste—with a long, dark history , starting with his days as censors chief to Sweepstakes head. It turns out he had given millions of pesos to the Prince of Cinematic Darkness himself, Carlo J. Caparas. The chilling task: to produce, write, and direct the series “Ang Pangarap Kong Jackpot” as part of the campaign to promote the lotto—something that looks like it no longer needs any more promoting.

10. THE VOICE OF TERROR: CHARICE PEMPENGCO

After lungs of steel and harmonic registers that crack the skies open, now she has an American twang.

11. THE SCENT OF SCANDAL: HAYDEN KHO LAUNCHES PERFUME LINE

Our head… bursting with punchlines, we don’t know where to begin.

Of course you wouldn't understand what Korean singers sing about, because they're Korean.(But I can say that the quality of their music is as meaningful and as sincere as ours. Everything is just about pure love, innocence and some being sexy-- but they can't go over the top--either lyrics or stage costumes-- because they have that ministry of sh*t that bans overly sexy things)rnI agree with one other comment tho, you wouldn't want JRock to get popular here, they wear more make up and wear much extravagant (not to mention bright) costumes.rnOne other thing, Korean singers do not put much make up actually, they all like the natural look. (except for guys who sometimes wear eyeliners) rnI'm half Korean and half Filipino, so I just had to clarify things, I don't want people to misunderstand other people's cultures. rnrnAnd about Charice, she's still young, she takes every opportunity given to her by others that was not even offered to her here before. So yeah. XD

as much as I agree with some of your points in your article...just can't help it...i have to say thisrnrnI love Pinoy music and culture much but I also appreciate different genres of music from other countries...and I think your comment about KPop Invasion is pretty ETHNOCENTRIC. having crazy hair styles & fashion do not necessarily mean they're gays. someone's ignorant about other cultures here. tsk, a lot of people tend to evaluate other culture and people based from their own standards of what is "appropriate" or "right" or "accepted".

At least Charice really has talent. Half the rehashed pop songs turned into sickeningly slow, sweet lullabies are sung by random talentless actors/actresses trying to dominate whatever attention whoring machina there is available. I wanted to shoot the radio when a slow version of "Single Ladies" played while riding a taxi.rnrnBut take your own pill and be a little more open minded about Charice. She ain't no punk/rock screaming hardcore mofo, but she does her best in her chosen field. The attention given to her is just.rnrnNot into Kpop, but I'm a fan of Japanese rock, and if you're sick of Kmen, oh you would not want Jrock to become popular here. Will say Koreans are a lot better in the dancing department though, compared to Jpop (which mostly consist of "cute" pose and little skips put together).rnrnOn a random note, listen to April Boy's Tanging Sa yo, then Listen to X Japan's Forever Love (X released the song first).rnrnThat Twilight - "inspired" (by inspired I mean translated to Tagalog and changed a few things) piece of retarded bull was just mind numbing. I hate riding the bus from work to home. And I thought that Mary-sue, self-inserted piece of toilet paper couldn't possibly get any lamer...
  • i\'m a creep Nov 11 2010 @ 06:57pm Report Abuse
What's with the haters. Other than Charice, everything on this list creeps me out.
  • saranghae! Nov 10 2010 @ 09:35pm Report Abuse
It's funny at best... besides, these Top 10 things are to be taken with a grain of salt. It's for fun; it's not to be taken as the truth. rnrnWith that said, the list for me almost hit it on the dot... with the exception of the Charice part. I've no problem with Charice's success in the US market, even though I'm no fan. The american twang comment was a bit weak... What I think would've made it more fun was if s/he poked fun at the whole Charice/ Cheeks surgery issue.rnrnThe American twang isn't that bad - hey if your job requires to speak that way, then you should right? But the surgery, that would've made the list priceless.

Mahiya ka naman sa mga anak mo. You are a disgrace to all women. It's not about yourself. Show some respect sa anak mong babae! What a terrible example.
  • ces Nov 03 2010 @ 10:55pm Report Abuse
I do agree that it sounds a bit off to hear Charice with an American twang but to label it a Voice of Terror is a bit too much. I think there's humor in being sarcastic but in this case, it is downright mean and distasteful. She has done our country proud. What can you do? A poor girl who did not have any formal voice lessons, mentored by her mother most of her life, gets discovered by Oprah, has a more successful career in the US than in her own country, still in her teens, even if I were in her position, I will try to assimilate in my new environment. Every teen at some point in his/her life becomes impressionable. She is only trying to blend into her new environment. To be a subject of a mean spirited article is not a fair game. Think carefully before you write next time.

  • anong wish Nov 03 2010 @ 03:21am Report Abuse
AT wishrnrnI think that would not happen as Lourd is a social critic, and pointing out the ironic and negatives are part of his terrain. Sure, Charice is doing fine, but let us not get ahead of ourselves and pin our hopes on a single singer. After all, she is just another pop-star. Would you think americans are proud of Britney? I hardly think so. rnrnAt anong ibig sabihin mo na Nonoy is 'actually doing well'? He is running the government like a student council, and a bad one at that. He is not doing anything well.
  • phoebe Nov 02 2010 @ 10:46pm Report Abuse

I wish that one day, Lourd will write an article that is not negative or that somehow uplifts the Filipino. Punong Puno ka ng negatibo sa katawan kapatid, time to look at the brighter side of things and time to uplift, encourage and not criticize and demoralize your fellow Filipinos. Charice is doing well she is a pride of our country, PNoy is not doing any bad and is actually doing well. So Lourd, mejo pakasaya ka brader maxado kang malungkot sa buhay at negatibo. Peace!

@Adik, thank God , you have nothing to say.rnrnLanguage is culture. There will always be Filipino English. 100 years from now, the Filipinos will still be speaking the same English with the same accent unless you speak American English (with twang) every single day or migrate to the USA whereas, you will be speaking American English every day as well.Charice will definitely speak that language with the twang.rnrnWhatever the non-native English speakers do, there would still be Singapore English, Malaysian English, Nigerian English, Indian English and of coure the Filipino English.rnrnLANGUAGE IS CULTURE.

American twang is good but we will have to remember nothing can be better than the Filipino accent, which is known to be neutral. Everybody can easily understand this accent.rnrnIn the case of Charise, if she will be making more money using the American twang in her roles or interviews, I suggest she use that accent. Outside her job, it will be best for her to use the neutral accent.rnrn

  • tsong Nov 01 2010 @ 10:15pm Report Abuse
...ang isa pang example dyan ay si arianna huffington. she is a national syndicated columnist in america at napapanood yan sa mga political shows. she is greek by birth, spoke with thick heavy greek accent at matindi kung nakikipagbalitaktakan sa mga kano pero hindi pinilit ang sarili na mag-american accent. succesful naman di ba? the point here is, speak in the manner that you are comfortable and clear na maiintindihan ng lahat. kung pa-kano accent ka at hindi mo naman mapanindigan from a to z eh wag na. nakakabwisit lang.
  • however Nov 01 2010 @ 09:45pm Report Abuse
Nothing wrong or terrifying about speaking English with an American accent. rnrnCharice's primary audience and base of operations is in the US. Her first all-original album is in English, first released in the US. The people who took the biggest risk with her aren't Filipinos, or even Filipino-Americans.rnrnLike it or not, she should have an American accent.rnrn- - - - - - rnrnHOWEVER, if she starts using her twang when she speaks FILIPINO, then go ahead, include her in this list. Give it the #1 spot if you have to.
  • tsong Nov 01 2010 @ 09:28pm Report Abuse
hindi naman baduy ang american accent or yung sinasabi na twang kung native born american ang nagsasalita. nagiging baduy lang kung gagayahin ng pinoy or any other countries. nagmumukha kasing pilit at hilaw na mangga ang dating. sakit talaga yan ng mga pinoy. nakapag-abroad lang eh naki-accent na din kahit na matigas pa sa bakal ang dila. you have to speak english in the way that you are comfortable and clear that everybody can understand. Di naman problema yan, just look at arnold schwartzenegger and salma hayek, okey lang di ba?
  • americantwag_baduy! Nov 01 2010 @ 08:34pm Report Abuse
On why the american twang is baduy and should not be aped by Pinoys...rnrnRemember how our first republic was stolen by the americans (note that I am not capitalizing the word)? I suggest reading up on the Philippine-American War, some Red Constantino, and the Rosales series from Frankie (Sionil) Jose. Speaking English with an american accent, in my humble opinion, is not exactly something to be proud of. Better to use a 'neutral' accent.
  • americantwag_baduy! Nov 01 2010 @ 08:21pm Report Abuse
@burrito whatever... rnrnFrom my standpoint, the american twang is the most irritating accent you can hear around the globe. Also, medyo baduy if you act like you forgot your normal accent when Charice goes back home. rnrnBtw, LDV is a literary genius. He writes poetry, has won the Palanca award, sings spoken word / jazz, and quite on the spot with world politics and issues. I would give up 50 Charice's for one LDV. Enough said.

  • chain reaction Oct 31 2010 @ 07:10pm Report Abuse
Lourd, parang affected ka sa "twang" ni Charice ah! But isn't her American twang a natural result of her being surrounded by Americans? Cmon, di ba kapag nasa Tate ka ang kausap mo lang ay mga kano? Eh di syempre, sa araw-araw, oras-oras na pakikipagusap mo sa kano, nagagaya ka na ng pagsasalita mo sa kanila. So what's wrong with Charice's getting an American twang? I'd rather have Charice than a f*ck-faced Lourd DeVeyra.

Katawa ka Lourd na pati ang komento ng isang 3-year old ay patulan mo. I think you also shamelessly exploit to the hilt a totally-innocent remark of a 3-year old. And in that sense, ka-level mo na rin ang nanay ni Baby James (who is st*p*d enough to make a lengthy explanation of what her son meant), at pati na rin si Manny Villar (who had the gall to exploit the 3-year old's innocent blurt as a "ringing" endorsement of his (Villar's) presidential aspirations. Shame on you! Spare the kid!

The Filipino accent will not cut it in the United States. The colegiala and sosi English which is so famous in Manila will not cut it in the United States. Accent is a biggie in the States. If you don't speak like the Americans do, you are considered out in both business and entertainment world UNLESS your accent is European (like French or British). Even Arnel or our very own call center agents completed accent development classes. Remember, the audience and source of income here: the Americans.

Charice was sent to the hospital after eating sushi in Singapore. It was declared as food poisoning. If this happened in Manila, it will be all over spot's newsfeed repeatedly. Who cares about Philippine tourism? But again, it happened not in Manila but in swanky Singapore where food is clean.

blackhand is right, porke meron tayong manny pacqiao and charice pempengco(my spelling right?) eh we will be eyeing them as the highest in the sky, meron din silang flaws, imagine aling dionisia on mp, and to charice, "awit ng kabataan??".. not all of their products are our prides...

@blackhandrnrnUhmm... yeah?! Kasi in the first place, wala tayong karapatang pumuna ng flaws ng iba, unless ka-level natin yung pinupuna natin. rnrnKaya nga Crab Mentality eh, kasi hinihila pababa. Sa pag-puna palang it's obvious na gusto niyang hilain pababa si Charice kasi he thinks she's not worthy. rnrnOh well, I better shut up. Lourd De Veyra is like a Sharpie Cake maker and those na magiging against sa gawa niya will be attacked like Sharpie crows. Scary!

the names on the list have that sort of 'bad influence'.. And in some sort of ways those names keep the mass in deep slumber so deep they can't afford to wake up and realize that our country is in an affair with poverty and melancholy-or some sort of fantazindy, esp. on suburbs like in my place... But, in my head, if these folks will have themselves some sort of advocacy like being an active greenpeace advocate or the likes, then, let's turn the tables...

@baby burritto, this is ain't a form of crab mentality to charice! it's Lourd's constructive criticism...bakit ba porke't may naobserve lang na negative or flaws sa mga world-renowned pinoy celebs abroad, crab mentality ang nasa utak niyo? to preserve their "greatness aura"? that filipino race is the greatest? LOL the term "Filipino Pride" now can be replaced by "Filipino Arrogance"!

Yeah and now look at the Philippine pop culture, ask youngsters some smart questions and you'll get what? Bananas and zeros??? The current trend in the country right now is (most probably) Lourd's point of view to include Charice in this post, not 'how to be a successful chap'... In my experience, most guys I encountered who follow the cult of our dear country's conttemporary pop cultue are the ones who can't answer 15 divided by 3, i.. mga sablay, now if thosee personalities on the list aren't that inffluential to our culture, then we might see betterr results.....
  • baby burritto Oct 29 2010 @ 06:35pm Report Abuse
Parang I sense what crab-mentality in you.
