JJ Yulo's Top 10 Pinays in the Culinary World

JJ Yulo | Published: Mar 22, 2011 - 4:15pm

This month is Women’s Month, I’ve been told.

As a member of the male half of the human species, and a sensitive one at that, it has come to my attention that there are a gazillion women who have made major impact on the culinary world, but who don’t seem to get as much attention as, say, big international personalities and rock stars like Gordon Ramsay or Mario Batali.

For this week’s post, I’d like to give a shoutout and a tip of my hat to some of the women, specifically the Filipina ladies, whom I truly admire for their bit in helping shape our food landscape as well as our palates.

Martin, moral of the story: Mag comment ka ng mag comment hanggang gusto mo. You pushed the envelope too far. Papa don't preach.
  • zagat Mar 25 2011 @ 11:37pm Report Abuse
@ Martin, eh kasi naman you started with condescending statements eh even using the word "pointless". If somebody asks you what makes you more superior than others who disagree, how would you feel responding to that? Even Zagat's list has been questioned multiple times.

Oh Martin, you started toasting him. Readers of spot are not fools. Check the thread history. In a court of public opinion, nobody owes you an iota of explanation.
  • martin Mar 25 2011 @ 07:12pm Report Abuse
it's simple. everyone IS entitled to an opinion. but if you are prepared to express one, then you must be prepared to defend it as well. if you're boss called you in for a meeting and assesses your current work performance simply as "y** s*ck at work", would you not be entitled to an explanation?rnrnperhaps i my comments have taken too much of an edge, and my intent was never to insult, but to illicit a more lucid response. all i asked is that the poster provide examples of what HE considered better than average. people who are quick to opine and yet refuse to be constructive are not adding to the dialogue, and instead should refrain from sharing.rnrnand for the record, i didn't get nasty (with the helen keller comment) until he decided to get condescending with the "you should eat at Frech Laundry" comment.

I love all the women on the list, each of them has their own contributions to the Philippine culinary word. My personal icons are Doreen Fernandez, Micky Fenix (who's a superb researcher as JJ says), and then Amy Besa whose educating Filipinos abroad as well. Would like to add Felice Sta. Maria to the list and the late Mila Enriquez who have published food history books as well.

Great leveler daw. Hindi na kailangan ng mga food reviewers para idikta kung ano ang good taste. Ang bibilis mag label na pretentious daw eh kasi pare- pareho lang naman silang nagmamagaling.

The person shared his comment about the list. He thought it is an average list. If you like the list, then you should like it. Why throw mud at the person who dislikes it? He can call himself a guru of every kitchen. He call tell the world he ate at every top restaurant of the world. He doesn't owe anybody any explanation which you are trying to elicit. It's a free country, who knows? Shoot the messenger? Chef, what is happening to this country.

Thomas Keller, that's because you're a poser and a troll. So pretentious and pedantic. What is your claim to fame ba?
  • restaurateur Mar 25 2011 @ 12:12pm Report Abuse
Magsitigil kayo.
  • @martin Mar 25 2011 @ 12:02pm Report Abuse
You simply can't accept other people's opinions. It is as simple as that. You don't tell me what I should say and what I should not say. It is typical of Pinoys who will bash the messenger if the opinion is different from theirs.
  • @martin Mar 25 2011 @ 11:29am Report Abuse
Hahahahahaha Helen Keller hahahahahahaha i love it!
  • martin Mar 25 2011 @ 11:07am Report Abuse
@thomas kellerrnI've eaten at the French Laundry as well as Per Se, so I'm well versed in Mr. Keller's cuisine. It's not my spirits that need uplifting, sir, but your attempts at appearing continental by choosing an internet handle that's supposed to impress? Or by refusing to qualify your statements by hiding behind the First Amendment and claiming it's your right to an opinion? rnrnIf you are too blind to the fact that you are cowering now simply because you can't respond succinctly, then perhaps a change of name from Thomas to Helen is in order.
  • abby Mar 25 2011 @ 10:36am Report Abuse
love the way they shine! hooray to all Classic Filipina Chefs! I hope the other chefs don't just want to be on TV,but be with the students who wants to gain knowledge. Because some teaching chefs just talk the walk not walk the talk!
  • @martin Mar 25 2011 @ 08:27am Report Abuse
I don't want to add anymore to what I already said. I expressed my opinion, so be it. You are asking too much back up statements and delve into the technicalities like its a court proceeding. If anybody is not happy with opposing views, the comment section should be off or create a personal blog where the comments will always be in favor of your personal choices. Its that simple. Try eating at the French Laundry to uplift your international taste.
  • martin Mar 25 2011 @ 12:08am Report Abuse
@thomas kellerrnrnAt no point did I impose my opinion on others. Read my message: not once did I express an opinion. All i asked was that you provide comparative context to YOUR opinion. if you claim they are average, then it makes sense that others have set the bar higher in your standards. so who are these people? and then you suffix your "opinion" with the word, "hype". so you've not only provided non constructive, non contextualized opinion, you've manages to denigrate the people on the list.rnrnAnd just to clarify your clarification, "mediocre" also means average. in fact "mediocre at best" means average at best, which, in terms of qualification, is even less positive than just mediocre.
  • bluepiranha Mar 24 2011 @ 04:35pm Report Abuse
Good list. My mom has a number of cookbooks penned by Nora Daza and the late great Doreen Fernandez - some of them even older than I am.rnrnI remember some of them even had cooking shows of their own, the Daza family especially, in the 1980s and early 1990s. Nora's son Sandy became the main host in its latter days. They usually aired on weekend mornings. :)

The photo of the Dazas - that's Nina, the daughter, not Sandy. Sandy is a guy!
  • thomas keller Mar 24 2011 @ 08:14am Report Abuse
@ martin, I did not say mediocre. I said mediocre at best. It means average. If that is my opiniion, why is that a problem? Why do you want to impose your opinion on others?
  • martin Mar 23 2011 @ 10:37pm Report Abuse
@thomas kellerrnWould be interesting to see your list if you find the above-mentioned crew as mediocre. and yes, your opinion is your own -- however pointless it may be. opinionated criticism with a constructive aspect is always welcome. otherwise, you're just hiding behind the anonymity of the internet, and it's called trolling.rnrnand by the way, your handle misappropriates you -- Mr. Keller is a gracious artist of a chef who often suffers from the same tag you assigned these women, that of being "hyped".
  • thomas keller Mar 23 2011 @ 02:27pm Report Abuse
My opinion. Nobody can change it even for a freebie.
  • @thomas keller Mar 23 2011 @ 11:16am Report Abuse
What a hater. May your tribe decrease.
  • thomas keller Mar 23 2011 @ 10:44am Report Abuse
    Mediocre at best. Hype.
  • robert Mar 23 2011 @ 10:09am Report Abuse
Great list I hope young chefs read this because most kids nowadays think the good chefs come out on tv which is rarely the case :)rnrnGetting to know the good chefs locally is a great benchmarking and inspiring tool for young chefs.rnrnGod Bless the Filipino chef!!!
  • samantha Mar 23 2011 @ 09:20am Report Abuse
Good list! very inspiring for a young chef like me.
