Catfood, Skyflakes, Cinemalaya Faux Pas Atbp.

Rafael Santos earned the ire of theater folk after making a questionable comment about theater actors on the ANC show Cityscape last week

Oh dear. It seems young filmmaker Rafael Santos, whose short film Samarito is showing at Cinemalaya this year, made some tacky remarks about theater actors. People are pissed, and understandably so.

Joel Trinidad, in an open letter to Cinemalaya, called for the removal of Samarito from the festival which starts in mid-July. He called Santos     “insensitive, mean-spirited, and divisive” in the letter. These are scathing words, to be sure, but also a description that sure fits everyone at some point or another. We are also human, after all, just like Rafael Santos.

There have been many reactions to the backhanded compliment slash demeaning comment Santos made on television. Theater actors and other industry professionals—those who don’t complain, cry on cue, and come on time—have cried foul. Perhaps Rafael Santos thought he was being “witty” and “ironic” (when he was merely being arrogant and insensitive) when he expressed his preference for working with theatre actors. The comment was made in bad taste, certainly, but perhaps the message was not meant to injure. From my understanding of what he said, Santos was actually trying to convey that he likes working with theater actors because they are professionals who have passion for their craft despite the long hours and the low wages.

Apparently, Rafael Santos has since sent a letter of apology, which ends with the slightly puzzling statement: “I don't expect to be forgiven, but I do hope my family is treated kindly.” (I don’t know: what is he expecting? Social ostracism? Hate mail? Death threats?)

This fracas has made me wonder about two things: first, who is this Rafael Santos and what makes him so tactless? Second, I wonder if it was ultimately a clever move on his part to say something seemingly careless and inflammatory on national television. Remember the old showbiz adage “there’s no such thing as negative publicity?” My curiosity is piqued and so now I guess I’ll just have to see his work at Cinemalaya this year. Anyway, it’s a short film already programmed with a bunch of other shorts. If it’s awful, at least it won’t last very long. If it’s good and he gets to do more work soon, he may have a hard time casting theater actors!

All else aside, let me say this: I hope someday everyone gets paid what we are really worth. Support the arts and Filipino artists!

P.S.
And who was that elegant and well-spoken gentleman sitting on the other side of the couch in the television clip posted above? That’s Loy Arcenas, acclaimed stage designer and director, whose film Niño is also at Cinemalaya this year.

At last, something to look forward to.

Hi there! We all know he was just pulling a joke and making his interview cool & relax. But the thing is, HE USED THE WRONG WORDS to describe a theater actor. For some, who has no idea or passion ing theater acting, it was just a mere joke. But for those people concerned, it was insulting enough to feel bad and sorry for him. Anyhow, what we should do is LEARN from his mistake.

he chose the wrong words, and made the wrong joke.he's just new.he cant even be considered "one of them" just because he made an entry at the cinemalaya. he may probably have "high" regards w/ theatre actors, but with that remark, he just disrespected them. and no, i don't think these veteran actors are exaggerating.am sure, kung sa inyo ginawa yan maiinis din kayo and you would demand more.

It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by wrongdoings.

haha! just read wincy aquino ong's post on facebook. it's true. what he says reminds me of what i saw in the 80's growing up, even now!rn - adults talking to kids in taglish to promote them talkingrn in englishrn " Anak, eat na tayo" ; "Yes mommy!" rn - kris aquino with her st*p*d "Now Na" phrasern rn as for rafa, this incident actually reminds me of one of the things why i left PI. I can't stand this conyo b*llsh*t! went to a private school seeing conyo boys act like this. granted, not all of them are like that but, you tend to remember the bad apples the most. I moved here in the states and have dated and had boyfriends - caucasian/white, asian, hispanic americans. Take note: they're all guwapo and hunkababes, but the most attractive thing about them is that they're so down to earth, warm, and friendly! Like those half brit Azkal guys! Di katulad ni Rafa with his Conyo b*llsh*t! Saksak niya sa baga niya ugali nya! Ayayay! I need to get fresh air!

Just when I've forgiven Rafa Santos, another director attempts to sound smart.rnrnWINCY AQUINO ONG has just published a sweeping (and long-winded) generalization entitled, "The Problem With Conyo Humor: Ruminations On Rafa Santos And The Uprooted Kids of Ayala Alabang" on his Facebook account. It's open to public, so feel free to check it out.rnrnThe first part sounds reasonable until he starts making insulting generalizations about English-speaking, Alabang-dwelling, rich people. He blames them for bringing up people like Rafa.rnrnHe may think he's putting down that upper demographic, but the English-speaking, Americanized, Ateneo-educated Ong is actually describing himself. rn

Pwede ba tigilan na yang mga pa-condescending comments that his sarcasm is actually giving high regard to theater artists. Walang flair. Straight to the point. Yung mga trying hard to be pa-fair, pwede ba tigilan na yang pagpapa-fair niyo.

The fact that he said those things show that he's still immature, basically a kid still. Unless his parents are of thesame lot, they should teach their son to be more respectful and have more "breeding". rnActors, regardless of how much or how less they get paid, deserves respect for their craft. As if being paid low is not demeaning enough, they get hired by this "kid" who also pays them low and takes advantage of it, and then insults them on national tv by telling the public they eat sky flakes and cat food for pay!!!! rnIt is good that he issued an apology but.. he also reiterated that what he meant was to compliment (by way of insulting), which is not really a compliment in the end, when you think about it. Tsk! Tsk! Tsk! And he says film actors have bad attitude and big egos???? Maybe he should look in the mirror first!

i hope that cinemalaya won't remove the film at least for the sake of santos' hired actors, i.e. to give them a chance to show their hard work and passion in acting. rnrnbut still, i wish that mr. santos would really learn his lesson regardless if he truly meant his statement as a sarcasm.

His words and the manner in which he said them were thoughtless and insensitive. He was trying to be witty and ironic but only ended up looking like a shameless douche next to the articulate Mr. Arcenas. It is NOT enough to explain or excuse his behavior by simply insisting on the many ways that "his words were taken out of context". If his intent was really to praise and not insult theater actors, then he needs to just suck it up and make a public verbal apology so we can all move on!

  • kororo 11 months ago Report Abuse
You can never take back a spoken word. At least, humingi na ng sorry. Sana maging mapagpatawad na lang ang lahat.

It was really a back handed compliment. Majority of the theater people were livid when the video was circulating in the social networking sites. Nevertheless, it is common knowledge that theater actors are "sometimes" treated in this manner--great performance + low pay--when working in films. Theater-trained actors at times accept projects hoping for the big break. I'm sure, Santos has great respect for theater actors, because of their discipline and training, yet he is also aware that a lot them accept work for peanuts, because they have no choice. It seems he felt like he's "one of the boys" and part of the "theater circle", which made him very comfortable in uttering those tongue-in-cheek remarks, but the more senior theater actors didn't take it lightly. For many, the way he delivered those "dry humored statements" appeared to be condescending and insensitive. This could be another Willie Revillame Syndrome and this incident should lead theater artists to reconsider their working conditions whether in TV or in films. I think this guy should issue a public apology, otherwise he might be mobbed on the day of the screening of his film and he might be forced to eat, not just his words, but tons of sky flakes and cans of cat food in the process. And that would be very, very tragic. Or this is just an over-reaction because we are all suffering from irony deficiency? Well, irony or not, it ain't Kosher. Another lesson learned from the twilight zone.

I don't think its what he said, its the way he said it. rnBut I think "catfood" was over the line. He could have stopped with Sky Flakes. This kid was spewing with arrogance. He wanted to look nonchalant, he ended up looking like a tool
