Thai TV director who married his dead fiancée suffers backlash; People ask, "Is he a hopeless romantic or a publicity hound?"

The Chadil Deffy-Sarinya "Anne" Kamsook video, which is actually a slideshow of the couple's personal photos, as well as photos taken during the "wedding-cum-funeral."

MSNBC.com reported earlier this week that Thai television director Chadil Deffy (also known as Deff Yingyuen) married his already-dead girlfriend of 10 years, Sarinya "Anne" Kamsook.

According to MSNBC.com, the wedding-cum-funeral happened at a temple in Thailand's Surin Province earlier this January. Deffy then proceeded to post photos of the event on Facebook. He labeled the Facebook album, "Corpse Bride." As of January 25, 8:54 p.m., the said album has over 37,000 "likes." (The individual photos also have thousands of "likes" each.) Deffy also uploaded a video of the ceremony on YouTube. The dead bride lay in an open coffin.

Citing information from Pattaya Daily News, MSNBC.com revealed: "The couple met while studying at Eastern Asia University 10 years ago and had planned to get married for a while but Kamsook died in a car accident on January 3, according to media reports. She was 29."

MSNBC.com also quoted Deffy's friend, Onsiri Pravattiyagul, who wrote in an opinion column this week in The Bangkok Post. In it, Pravattiyagul wrote:

"The 'wedding' was his attempt to right a wrong, however belated the gesture might have been.

As expected, the initial public reaction was an outpouring of sympathy for the 'groom' and a wave of sentimental remarks. The romantically inclined were moved by this expression of 'true love,' however unconventional. It seemed to hit a nerve with many people. The offline media picked up on the buzz, too, and went to town with the story. Chadil found himself under a spotlight, experiencing an unexpected 15 minutes of fame.

Also as expected, within days, the backlash beganand it wasn't at all kind. In a heartbeat, Chadil went from being viewed as a hopeless romantic to being vilified as a publicity-hungry opportunist."

As of January 25, 8:54 p.m., what appears to be Deffy's original wedding video (embedded above) has gotten 67,004 views. Meanwhile, the video uploaded by CiNNTV featuring a news report about Deffy's wedding has gotten 563,794 views (embbeded below). Netizens are debating over whether Deffy is a hopeless romantic or a hopeless publicity hound.

Note: For the record, none of the reports cited in this feed explained how Deffy was allowed to "marry" his dead fiancée, nor did any of the reports explain if the ceremony was considered valid in any way.
