Baguio residents continue protest vs. SM's plan to "relocate" trees to make way for mall's parking facility

Published: Jan 30, 2012 - 10:42am

On January 20, 2011, ABS-CBNNews.com reported that around "3,000 people marched across the streets of Baguio City to protest the planned uprooting of nearly 200 trees for the construction (of SM Baguio's) seven-floor parking building."

The report had noted: "SM City Baguio was granted a cutting-balling permit by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) last October. The protesters blame the local government and the DENR for approving the project."

In the same report, SM management said that "no trees will be killed since they will all be replanted." However, as the report pointed put, "environmentalists warned that there is no guarantee that all of the replanted trees will survive."

In a Sun.Star Baguio article published on January 28, it was reported that concerned citizens and SM management will have to wait longer before a resolution is reached. The report explained: "Residents who want to join the stakeholders dialogue called by Mayor Mauricio Domogan will have to wait until after budget deliberations are done at the City Council. This is because the City Council cannot schedule hearings in its agenda as specified in the Local Government Code until the proposed P1.168-billion city budget is approved."

The report went on to say that "Domogan called for a dialogue after representatives from SM wanted an opportunity to present the design they have prepared for their mall expansion." SM management maintains that they will replant the trees, but concerned Baguio residents and environmentalists would rather that the trees be left where they are.

@Kingston true we have that kind of technolgy, but.. the trees are 50 years old.. they are going to die before they can be transferred to another location

Sad to say, some people who protest against this development are also the one neglecting their environment without them knowing it. Just look at Baguio. super dirty na niya unlike before. Illegal settlers are everywhere. What an eyesore. So I really hope that all these protesters, aside from fighting for the Pine Trees in Baguio, should also take time to check their surroundings. Baguio has many problems now, garbage, illegal settlers, gangsters, etc. Halos tao lang din ang may gawa. Fight for Baguio but don't focus on trees alone. Baguio is more than just its Pine Trees.

I guess, I could say that SM has the right to do what ever they want to do at the said property, since SM had already bought the land. and I say base on what I have read on different articles, the trees wont be cut down but rather be transferred, we got the technology to transfer a tree to another location that wont harm the tree.

    may point dinsi francois

since both parties have one objective na to protect the environment sana nga naman mag meet na lang sila halfway.

ang akin lang naman sana hangang ngayon na nag dedebate pa about sa issue, mag tanim na sila ng mga tree sapling na sinasabi nila, para lumaki na yung puno at matutu na mabuhay ng sarili...

Those who protest wanted the trees not to be cut to preserve the natural beauty of Baguio, while SM on the other hand also have plans for Baguio's beautification. Both parties had good intentions for clean and green baguio. Lets just hope both parties will resolve to something that will really benefit Baguio and its people..

while I was reading the statement of the SM, I was enlightened by their expansion, because they are building a 6.9 million liters of water reservoir, this can be a big help to solve the water shortage in Baguio

And it's a sort of flood prevention daw. The underground water reservoir will hold the amount of water equal to that which can be absorbed by almost 4,000 mature pine trees. Hindi yata kase 4,000 pine trees yung nasa SM Baguio kase and hindi pa lahat mature pine trees.

There's a new statement from SM Baguio City. Check it here:

I guess what we have to at least see that SM is doing something about this. I'm sure they are aware of the sensitivity even before they started operating, they already know how much environment is being valued in Baguio. Best if we see both sides first before pre-judging.

I support the idea of the protest but to focus on SM Baguio is too little too late. If you have seen Baguio in recent years, it looks horrible. The streets are congested, cramped, devoid of trees, and built up with *gly structure after *gly structure. The buildings have some of the worst architecture in the country (and that is saying something). Mines View is now corrugated G.I. sheet view. With all due respect to Caloocan, the city looks like Caloocan. I think we are too late to save Baguio.

These protesters are the same people who patronize the mall.

Same story when the plan to build SM at Luneta Hill was presented. After a couple of months from its grand opening, oh how the people from Baguio embraced and enjoyed it.

SM is the reason why I never came back to Baguio. Tourists go to Baguio for nature and to escape the hectic city life. And why would I go back there if it resembles Manila??

I'm saddened by the plight of this once great city. Tagaytay is slowly following it's path, hopefully the modernization stops now!

What do people expect from a conglomerate which keeps their department store employees standing for the most part of their shift?! Would it kill the management to at least provide monobloc chairs for their weary employees to sit on while waiting for customers, especially on slow days? Pansinin niyo mga empleyado nila sa department store at nakatayo maghapon, magdamag mga yan, walang upuan, siguro pag break time lang e sandali lang yun. Apparently, that conglomerate takes the expression "working the salt mines" a bit too literally. If those slave drivers will have it their way, they will chop down those pine trees and sell them as oh too many toothpicks and chopsticks, bottom line be d*****. There's not too many things a lot worse in the world than profit mad multibillionaires. i kid you not.

I'm afraid SM will win this one. Hopefully the trees survive.
