Angel Locsin slams Arnold Clavio for "racist comment" vs. Azkals; Sports analysts Bill Velasco, Boyet Sison say Clavio is being "unfair
PEP.ph reports that in the March 13 broadcast of Unang Hirit, host Arnold Clavio fired off a tirade against the Philippine Azkals.

PEP.ph reports that in the March 13 broadcast of Unang Hirit, host Arnold Clavio fired off a tirade against the Philippine Azkals. This was because two members of the team—Lexton Moy and Angel Guirado—are being accused of sexual harassment by Cristy Ramos. Ramos, the daughter of former President Fidel V. Ramos, serves as match commissioner for the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). [Note: Read "Azkals Angel Guirado and Lexton Moy accused of sexual harrassment by former President Fidel Ramos' daughter, Cristy."]

In one of Unang Hirit's segments, Clavio had discussed the Ramos-Azkals issue. Then, at some point, Clavio addressed the Azkals, saying, "Talagang aral na sa inyo 'yan. Ang yayabang n'yo. Akala n'yo porke't dinadagsa kayo ng mga fans, ang gaguwapo n'yo, e. Parang God's gift to women (Let it serve as a lesson to all of you. You're all so arrogant. You think because you have fans that you look so good. Like God's gift to women)." Clavio went on to defend Ramos and support her statement against the Azkals. Clavio then addressed the Azkals once more: "Hindi naman kayo Filipino. Nagpapanggap lang kayong kayumanggi. Hindi kayo dito lumaki, mahirap yun. Insensitive (You're not Filipinos. You're only pretending to be brown-skinned. You didn't grow up here, that's hard. Insensitive)."

On March 14, via her Twitter page, actress Angel Locsin, who is reportedly the girlfriend of Azkals player Phil Younghusband posted a series of tweets which said, "I think Arnold Clavio's a good person. But this time, sobrang foul lang (it's just so foul). That's his opinion. This is mine. Madali lang sumira ng reputasyon, mahirap ibalik. Konting sensitivity lang sana (It's easy to ruin reputations, it's hard to restore it. A little sensitivity, please)." When one Twitter user dissed her, Locsin tweeted this reply: "I'm reacting about the racist comment not the harassment issue. Have a nice day."

ABS-CBNNews.com revealed that in the sports show Hardball, hosts Bill Velasco and Boyet Sison also weighed in on Clavio's anti-Azkals tirade. Velasco noted: "[It] is a generalization based on one incident." Meanwhile, Sison said, "I can state one name that rings a bell, who has Filipino blood but not completely FilipinoRobert Jaworski. The name itself, he's Polish-American. I could even go as far as the President of this Republic (Benigno Aquino III), who everybody knows has a bit of Chinese blood in his veins."

In the same ABS-CBNNews.com report, it was noted that Clavio had already issued an apology (of sorts) for his anti-Azkals tirade. In an official statement posted on GMA News Online, Clavio said, "Ang isyu po rito ay sexual harassment at kung may nagamit man po akong mga salita na hindi angkop, nagpapakumbaba po ako at humihingi ng pang-unawa (The issue here is sexual harassment and if I said anything improper, I apologize and I ask for undestanding)." Clavio did not address the "racist" allegation.

Can Arnold feel/take the shoes of these athletes who have Filipina mothers and battered with mean statements against their birth? He raised the issue of culture, around the globe it swarms with varied ethnic and native enigma. Anybody could misunderstand one culture like the one living in the Bronx or in Tondo where disgusting speech seems an everyday wordplay. If one says "Bano ka or st*p*d in a slang way," the locals would not take that heatedly since it can be commonplace for them. But for Arnold to divert the issue of half-breed it becomes a racist item because he is attacking a Filipina who was fated to wed inter-racial or a foreigner and so happens bear children who are mere innocents they got to be discriminated in an unfair climate when Arnold Clavio irresponsibly vent his anger --judged on live TV. Ms. Ramos may have been hurt through words misconstrued for a joke in the men's room and the only recompense is the two athletes to do a gentleman's retraction---like "That was not intended, but we're sorry" Evreything should not have been blown out of unusual publicity where Arnold meddled and added flurry of strong censure. Racism is the most cruel especially to Filipina mothers who worked for greener pasture overseas, got married with foreigners and also helped their relatives in the Philippines. It's proper always to caution when airing an emotional newsbit....Arnold clavio slips and made a booboo.

Yes, there may be allegations against them, but have we heard the other side of the story? At yung pagkukunwaring kayumanggi, ano yun? Obviously, it was a swipe at cultural differences, anong kinalaman nun sa harassment.nnKung ginagamit lang ng Azkals ang kasikatan dito, Pilipinas pa rin ang nakikinabang sa kanila. Kaya yung mga insecure dyan, sana maginig patas at hindi racist, lalo na yung mga insecure sa sarili nilang balat.nnI am disappointed at GMA7, I think that they're far better than ABS-CBN in being fair, pero this just proves that they are trying to concel Arnold's insensitivity with their official statements.

    3. And they did apologize. Ive read 2 news about it. Ung isa nga ung lame alibis na kinaiinis ni Clavio kya todo react sya and rightly so because its lame. Azkal should not give apology / excuse that will insult the people's intelligence. But then again ganun din ang apology ni Clavio. Lame din. He didnt even own up to the racist comment he did. Bigotry to the highest level. Nagbato ka guilty ka rin.
All that aside, the investigating panel and the authorized agencies should PENALIZE / SANCTION the accused IF FOUND GUILTY. But do so not because the accused are not pure pinoys, or the aggrieved party is a lady or a daughter of the former Pres. Penalize them because sexual harassment is a serious offense to anyone and by anyone irregardless of the sex or nationality of the accused or the victim.
Unsolicited opinion to Mr. Clavio: Dapat dun ka lang nag-stick sa line of thought na un Mr. Clavio. I'd blame it to live TV. But please no lame apology as well. We all despise sexual harassment. But we despise racism as well.

As I was saying, there are many wrong points in Sport's opinion but we did agree that he is entitled to his wrong opinion. And since he/she had the guts to trample on Ms. Locsin's opinion to which she is entitled as well if we follow Sport's logic. But then again he also scolded Ms. Locsin to keep her "uneducated" opinion to herself which contradicts the former. Parang inaaway nya sarili nya.
    1. Of course what Mr. Clavio said is a racist rant. 'Coz racism is to point out one's race in a derogatory manner on an unnecessary situation. In the issue on harassment, the race of the accused or the victim is irrelevant because everyone and I mean everyone whether from a conservative or liberal nationality ay pwedeng maging victim of or commit sexual harassment. What Mr. Clavio did was use the fact that they are not pure pinoys as reason to why they committed the accused crime. Bkit pag pure pinoy ka ba automatically you cannot commit sexual harassment? That is a twisted logic and a racist one. And we Filipinos who are usually at the receiving end of many racist comments should know how it feels, how hurting it is.
    2. Ms. Locsin's opinion is not uneducated. Yours is, and it's baseless as well. You accuse her of condoning crime. Can you point out one proof that she did condone a crime. A.) It is still under investigation so non is proven yet. B.) All she did was tweet that the racist comment of Mr. Clavio is foul. Which is true. Nowhere in the tweet did she mention anything about the harassment or the crime much less condone them. Dont put words on her mouth (or on her tweet). Read the news again. She was reacting about racism not the harassment issue.

Sa mga taong nagsasabing 'di racism yung ginawa ni clavio eh mga t*ng* kayo. may 2 akong pamangkin parehong pinanganak sa England, one is 5 the other one is 4. pag naguusap kami sa YM video I always talk to them in english but my mum (there grandma who is also in London) will always insist that I talk to them in tagalog. Whenever I talked to them in Pilipino, they will answer back in english but they understand me just as well. What I mean is though they we're born overseas, their parents, who by the way are both Filipinos, are trying their best to teach their children our culture. It is not their fault to grow up with kids of different culture. So to say that foreign raised people are not pure Filipino is just pure BS, just like Arnold Clavio. nothing but a piece of BS. my mid finger for you Clavio.

first of all, angel locsin should just keep her uneducated mind and thoughts to herself. let us all really understand the meaning of racism....it is true that most of the azkals are not true blue filipinos by blood. when arnold clavio said that since they were not born here, and their cultures and upbringing different, does that necessarily make him a racist? asians are conservative. westerners are liberal. isn't that a fact? so why call his comment racist? maybe the delivery could have been better, but i see nothing wrong when someone voices his or her own opinion, as long as it is not based on lies. this is still a democracy we live in, right?
let us focus on the MORE IMPORTANT issue that this issue brings out...and that is the sexual harassment issue. isn't this the same team that was involved in an alleged rape case?? something is wrong here...and something is wrong with this team.
Locsin was WRONG in saying not to generalize....the whole team was in the locker room, girl! and NO ONE did anything to apologize or stop these team mates of theirs....and just watching a crime being done, without doing anything about it, makes you just as GUILTY. defend your boyfriend, but do NOT condone crimes, especially against WOMEN (since you are a woman yourself) or be blind to them...
this is my own opinion, and before anyone wants to take a shot at me, it is my right, as it is everyone else's, to voice my opinion and be heard. as was and is the right of arnold clavio.

123qwe You're wrong. Yes, the bigger issue is the harassment but on this particular article we are commenting on, the topic is your Arnarn and his racist comment. True that they're not pure pinoys, but that is not relevant to their capacity to harass anyone. It's as if ur idol broacaster is saying that because they are not pure Pinoys that why they committed their supposed wrong-doing. For your information, maraming pinoy ang nakacommit and guilty ng sexual harassment. Di lang foreigners or half breeds ang gumagawa nyan. Therefore, yung point nya about those athletes being non-Filipinos are simply uncalled for and were just said for the intention of insulting them. I admire his sympathy to the victim, Ms. Cristy, I do sympathize with her as well and hoped truth comes out and the guilty party be sanctioned. But that is no way to act on national TV and for someone of his calibre, that is just stooping to the a new low. And that apology is no apology at all, hindi nya nga inaamin na may nagawa syang mali. Ang sabi nya "...kung may ngawa man daw syang mali..." He's angry of Azkal dahil sa kanilang lame apology and alibi but he is guilty of it as well. What a bigot!

Who among WOMEN would really want to be SEXUALLY HARRASED? But, the thing is, I also cannot UNDERSTAND the LOGIC of MS. CRISTY, daughter of then PRES FVR, WHY all of a SUDDEN, she must really DO the ROLL CALL in the "DUG OUT"? In my OPINION, is Ms. CRISTY's getting in the DUG OUT, really a TASK that cannot be DONE by OTHERS, OTHER than a LADY OFFICIAL? So much EFFORTS, DEDICATION, MARTYRDOM has been SACRIFICED by some FOOTBALL FOLLOWERS, ATHLETES, SPONSORS, to REVIVE a SPORT that has been FORGOTTEN, due to LESS SUPPORT or FUNDING from the GOVERNMENT.
I cannot FATHOM, WHY INCIDENTS like this have to be TACKLED in the OPEN instead of RESOLVING it first to within the PHILIPPINE SPORTS COMMISSION?
At the HEIGHT of COMPETITION, this ISSUE had to be REVIVED? WHY? This has been brought in the OPEN already in the PAST MONTH, and now that the AZKALs is TRYING their BEST to QUALIFY and EARN some points for our COUNTRY, we NEED to HEAR this? HOW COME, the NONE SUPPORT in other SPORTS are not being HEARD, but, with such POPULARITY of the AZKALS, with GOOD LOOKING ATHLETES, it had to be MAGNIFIED, just because the OFFICIAL felt VICTIMIZED?
Please, LET US WORK for UNITY and NOT DIVIDE OUR CITIZENs sentiments, please.

Not sure if what was written is complete but it says... "At kung may nagamit man po akong mga salita na hindi angkop..." What? You're not even sure you said some racist stuff? You condemn the apology of Azkals, and rightly so 'cause what they gave is lame, unacceptable and even downright insulting to intelligence. But then again yours is not that far. For a batikang broadcaster na maalam sa salita, the reported apology above is simply not good enough!

The funny thing is when a person is doing something to be proud of, even the most absurd connection to Philippines or or the littlest possibility of having a Filipino blood, we jump on it and claim him/her as part Filipino for Filipino pride's sake. Kahit sobrang konti ng Filipino blood or malayong-malayo na ang Filipino lineage, inaangkin natin as Filipino kasi pride nga. Then on negative issues like this, kahit Filipino na talaga lineage / blood-wise, itinatakwil naman kasi daw hindi kayumanggi or di lumaki dito. There are two sides to the coin. It's a double edged sword. If you're willing to get the positive out of it, take the negative as well. I condemn the Azkal harassment issue. No excuse na bastusin ang kahit sino, babae o lalaki, pinoy man or foreigner. But I also condemn such racist comment from a supposedly high-caliber journalist /broadcaster. May maliit na punto but he could've delivered his point in a better way. It's kinda odd to get racist comment from a nationality that's been on the receiving end of such negative racism. Kumbaga we should know better. We'll Mr. Clavio could walk the talk now. Let's see how well he apologize and compare it to Azkals so-called apology

My first reaction when I heard (watched the news about Azkal's arrogance) is that I was furious. So when I learned that Ms. Ramos decided to sue the entire team, I thought it was the right thing to do. So I understand Mr. Clavio's reaction. But since, he is known, a newscaster and host, these qualifications made it improper for him to voice out his opinion.

The Azkals, the whole team must always remember that people take them as one team, regard them as one team, cheer for them as a team. So no matter who made the mistake it will always reflect on the team. They should be more respectful, and good mannered next time. Because of the negative things written about them, people can't really help but think and say that they are "mayabang".

mr. clavio's position on the alleged harassment issue is commendable but he crossed the line when he fired his tirade to the national football team's fil-foreign members. his comments regarding the lineage of the players has nothing to do with his position of the issue at hand. maybe he's just emotionally fired-up but then again he's a respected(?) journalist and a known TV personality and he should've stepped on the brakes first before lashing out those foul statements.

im sure die-hard kahulero's are rabid right now but that's just understandable. their team is facing battles on all fronts, most specially receiving tongue-lashing from their "kababayans" while they are proudly wearing the national colors regardless of their bloodlines, and trying like hell to bring home the win.

The KBP and/or Media Board needs to do something about their members. What Arnold Clavio said/did was Irresponsible Journalism, therefore, it is imperative that the KBP and/or punish Clavio for what he said. Prevent him from making any statements like this in the future. Make GMA suspend Clavio for 2 to 6 months. Thus, this will give other journalists an idea that while there is what we call "FREEDOM OF SPEECH" and "KARAPATAN SA MALAYANG PAMAMAHAYAG", there is also a limitation to such freedom/rights. You can't just say things like what Clavio said, especially if you're on TV.

We are one race that suffered from racism. I never imagined that a fellow Filipino like Clavio can be such a racist! Someone should teach this guy a lesson he'll never forget.
