Boo! Ria Limjap reviews Richard Gutierrez's Patient X

Ria Limjap | Published: Oct 30, 2009 - 7:00pm

It's Halloween again. Do you have plans? If you're a loser like me (that is, staying in town), and you have nothing better to do this weekend, why not scare yourself and shock your system with cheap tricks and sugary treats. Watch Patient X with a tub of Chef Tony's parmesan popcorn. Honestly, it's not a bad option. The popcorn is perfectly crisp and just the right amount of cheesy, kind of like Patient X.

Yam Laranas directs Richard Gutierrez as young doctor Lukas Esguerra whose family was eaten to death by aswangs. Don't expect too much in terms of plot, because aswang movies are always riddled with mysterious story loopholes–especially when filmmakers do their own take on it. In this case, the aswangs got the Hollywood makeover treatment: no horrific winged female creatures are they, instead thug-like monsters with fangs and white faces. Their leader Markus (played by Elvis Gutierrez who did an awesome job I think) has a missing wife named Guada (Cristine Reyes), who has escaped the aswang lair and lifestyle. When the police catch Guada, they throw her into the basement of a small hospital and try to kill her but find that she won't die. And of course Markus wants Guada back. Aswangs have feelings, too, I guess. So imagine the showdown: empty hospital, lots of rain, angry aswangs outside. It's a no-brainer di ba.

As always, Yam Laranas does a nice job in terms of technical polish. He also did the cinematography so everything looks pretty slick. He's good with visual trickery, which comes in handy for horror. Alas, the story just wasn't scary. Although there are lots of gulat moments in Patient X, it takes no psychological grip on our collective fears. It won't give you nightmares–which is not necessarily a bad thing.

And who cares if Richard is a bit of a hammy actor. So he only has one expression for sad, scared, angry, and shocked, his version of Zoolander's "Blue Steel" signature look. Richard is a hard working young actor whose years of costume-wearing television soap operas and lame romantic comedies are paying off. He has a huge fan base and his own production company. High profile and controversial just like the rest of his clan, could Richard Gutierrez perhaps be someone with enough savvy to become a major player in the industry?

Anyway. Happy Halloween.

I guess the saving of Cristine during Ondoy's flood didn't help, it only shows that the movie is really bad.

Yam Laranas is a talented cinematographer and a lousy storyteller. You should see his old movies, ganda ilaw, mg anggulo, wala kwenta istorya.

    LAME. VERY LAME!!!!

    NAKAKASUKA!

Lahat ng characters ang st*p*d. Hindi talaga nila naisip na pugutin ung ulo from the start amputa.

I laughed so hard when Richard shouted that he needed to bring the immortal, regenerating aswang to the ER.

Yeah, the young girl was dead for a considerable amount of time but Lucas was still able to revive her and what's more, she woke up after a few minutes like nothing happened!
  • James Laurenzo Nov 05 2009 @ 11:11am Report Abuse
Honestly, I watched this movie because of Yam Laranas.

I liked his first movie "Sigaw". It REALLY was kinda creepy.

And all that Hype about Laranas directing this Hollywood remake "Echo" (though I hadn't seen the remake)

NOW..I expected Patient X to be a good movie. Didn't expect this film to be SOO BAD.

I mean me and my wife we're laughing half the time at a lot of the scenes. The really st*p*d storytelling. The ridiculous camera movements and "blurring effect"

I really felt that this movie was funnier than the Iskul Bukol Movie.

    First off the Story:

The first fifteen minutes of the film already gave away the plot. So no need for brains for the next hour or so of the film.

Plus, how st*p*d can the dialogue get? There was this scene where the actors had to get to the generators, then the MD in the movie, after risking their lives asked "umaandar pa kaya ito?"

I mean c'mon? You go out in the rain, at risk of being eaten by aswangs to get the generator running and you weren't even sure in the first place if the generator still works? DUMB...

I could rant on and on about the story loopholes the whole day...Guada coming back after 20 years just to say sorry to richard? Wait...how many people did she kill in 20 years??? Whats so special about Richard that she specifically asked for his presence? Hmmmm...tooo shallow...

How about that scene where one of the nurses said "hmmm...kailangan paandarin ang generator, pay patient sa respirator" Teka lang kung naka respirator yun di ba dapat first five to ten minutes pa lang dead na yung girl? hmmmm....this defies science....

    NEXT: The acting

The aswangs weren't scary. They actually reminded me of drunk hippies on a rainy night. Aswangs are supposedly portrayed as predators in this film...boy these are the st*p*dest predators on the planet. They're near invulnerable as far as I can tell and they couldn't even break through a dilapidated hospital?

All they did to scare was to say "aaarrgggh" ...I tried to count how many times Yam focused on the lead aswang just for us to see him say "aaarrgggh" > Plus are thos teeth supposed to be scary? I though they just needed some urgent dental attention...

Richard Gutierrez? the only thing remarkable about him is that he seems to be getting fatter. Baka hinahabol niya si Raymond.

He got kicked around a lot,in some of the most idiotic fight sequences ever filmed. Nung naglalaban sila ng lead aswang all he did was shiver. That is brilliant acting.

Christine Reyes was a little bit better...although in those scenes where she was thinking about wether to bite or not bite richard, it actually felt like she was thinking about to kiss richard or not...again blame it on the st*p*d directing...

One thing leads to another, but overall this is the STUPIDEST film of the year. A huge disappointment for Laranas. It seems that he already graduated HS Filmmaking with Sigaw and returned to Pre school on this film.

I've seen better episodes in Shake Rattle and Roll than this crap.

Kaya pala nung papasok kami ng theater may nakasalubong kami babae sa popcorn stand...sabi niya "minsan lang ako manood ng sine ganito pa" It should have been a warning for me and my wife to get the hell out of there...

When we finished the movie, all me and my wife could muster was "BASURA".

I love horror films but this one was boring! Richard is cute but he can't act. Sana si TJ na lang ginawang bida.

*What's up with that torture scene? Bakit mukhang Abu Ghraib prisoner yung get-up ng tinorture?*

Miss: ‘Patient X’ with P10.8M; Hit: ‘This Is It’ with P33.2M After 6-Days in Box Office Posted by antoine on November 3, 2009

The King of Pop moonwalked to the top of Philippine box-office as the music documentary “Michael Jackson’s This Is It” opened at No. 1 nationwide, with a six-day gross of an electrifying P33.25-million for the Oct. 28-Nov. 2 frame. This according to Victor R. Cabrera, managing director of the film’s local distributor, Columbia Pictures.

The other wide release for the week, the much-hyped horror/thriller and Richard Gutierrez-Cristine Reyes starrer ‘Patient X’ took in a disappointing P10.8M in gross receipts in 6-days. After all the publicity and promo surrounding the movie, ‘yun lang ang nalikom ng ‘Patient X’ sa box office? We’re sensing a flop in the making for this movie, don’t you think? Will it be able to earn more or less than ‘Tarot?’ That’s pretty exciting to know in the end…

It was not worth my money. Richard, come on boy! You need acting workshop. Or maybe a miracle. The movie is so pretentious to be realistic or indie-like. It failed.

And as for Richard, im a fan and will say hes improved greatly! wtach it again and ul know what i mean!

  • Riri Nov 02 2009 @ 01:49am Report Abuse
Who would watch a movie with RG in it? He is such a lousy actor. I gave it a chance and boy It's BORING! Go to acting workshop, you are not a good leading man, you always have the same reaction. You remind me of a 13yr old boy who had his first acting gig.
  • Porcelain Nov 01 2009 @ 07:34pm Report Abuse
Thank Goodness I walked out after 30 minutes. Yes, Richard only has one expression and those marbles kept appearing? What was up with that?

Now I love Tagalog horror movies like T2, Kulam, pamahiin etc. This one was lousy! Oh minus points on the looks department bec Richard was kinda fat here too.

I watched the movie and I liked it. I would say

that it is way better than all the horror local

movies that were shown this year. I certainly

    would recommend it for halloween.

i have also high expectations for this movie.. but when I watched it, the early part were boring so I just continued thinking that a twist may come to give me some shouts and amazements.. but, never did it happen.. the story was poor, the cinematography is good though.. but I will not recommend it for somebody to watch.. its 1.5 out of 5...
  • commoner Oct 31 2009 @ 10:56am Report Abuse
Expected something in this movie but was really disappointed...

    - cut scenes (when Miriam Quiambao closed the door)
    - sound effects are recurring (vampire hiss)
    - should the window of Richard's car be left open (last part)

Lastly, the movie should have chosen "JOLENS" as title...

    Sorry, just my opinion...
  • andrew Oct 30 2009 @ 07:15pm Report Abuse
Given the big promotional push GMA Films, Viva Films and RGutz Productions gave this movie, the fact that it earned a kinda low P1 million in Metro Manila on opening day is kinda telling. (In contrast, Jennifer's Body--which was visible only on MRT billboards and trailers inside the cinemas--earned approximately P1.24 million. Considering that the local distributor, 20th Century Fox, spent nothing to produce the movie and next to nothing to promote it, you do the math.)

Maybe it's the glut of Halloween movies in the cineplexes this week. Maybe it's the spate of negative publicity Richard Gutierrez has been generating. Maybe, given Ondoy's recent devastation, Richard's fan base doesn't have the money or a sense of priority to be scared by their idol. What's certain, though, is that his hopes of becoming a bona fide industry player have been knocked down a peg.

Besides, why name your production company something cheesy like RGutz? Ah, hubris comes before the fall!
