10 Fresh Finds at Salcedo Market

Frances Lorraine Haw and Trixie Zabal | Published: Aug 14, 2009 - 1:37pm

The Salcedo Community Market
Jaime Velasquez Park between Leviste & Tordesillas Streets
Salcedo Village, Makati
Hours: Saturdays, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For five years now, the Salcedo Market has become a place where foodies unite, creative culinary juices overflow and food finds constantly discovered.  Since it began in 2004, the Saturday market has attracted food lovers and market shoppers coming in from as far as Alabang, Antipolo and Quezon City. Organic produce, international specialties or even some   local hard-to-find ingredients are available here, with new stalls every few months joining in the fun. If you haven't been back in a while,  SPOT.ph found ten reasons (in no particular order) to return to the Saturday market:

Kub Kaow Thai's Pomelo Salad (right) is refreshing with a hint of spice.
Kub Kaow Thai's Pomelo Salad (right) is refreshing with a hint of spice.

1. The Pomelo Salad at Kub Kaow Thai

Kub Kaow Thai is a month-old stall that sells authentic Thai food. Kasinee Duncan, a gracious Thai lady who was a regular market visitor herself, says that the Pomelo Salad (single serving at P120) is her bestseller. Refreshing with a hint of spice for that extra kick, it's also cooked without any fish sauce (patis). Other must-try items at Duncan's booth are the Tom Yum Soup (P120) and her Thai Tacos (P100).

RIB SHACK @ Salcedo Market has the best tasting, meat-off-the-bone, succulent grilled pork ribs I ever tasted in this side of town. Hats off those guys! Do yourself some "flavor" and try those ribs when you are at Salcedo Market.

The measure of Man's greatness is not dependent on how often he comes up with his/her correct action rather but lies rather on his/her ability to recognize his mistakes and gather the strength it to admit it

I am sure the Chicken(2 Sisters) is delicious, ...dont you think P750 or $15 is outrageous, GIVE ME A BREAK! You are bound to go down...sorry, but i think the owner of this store are GREEDY! I dont think you are paying a lot of overheads, when your staff are underpaid...maybe P200 or $4 per day, okay, maybe more than that, we all know the salary of a staff back in PI..tsk, tsk, tsk.

I couldn't agree with you more igeramos...

There's a grammatical error on page 9. In the sentence "they use to share a space", "use" should be "used." Sorry to nitpick. :) Besides that, great article. Reminded me that I haven't been to Salcedo Market in a while.

Thanks for your suggestions, Travesty. I put the details and operating hours on top of the story. The Legazpi Market story is in the works, watch for it.
  • travesty Aug 15 2009 @ 07:05am Report Abuse
I hope that SPOT will feature the Sunday market on Legazpi Market, Makati. How does it compare with Salcedo and what time is it open?
  • travesty Aug 15 2009 @ 06:52am Report Abuse
To SPOT, I hope you put the important information on the first page, not the last page of the sequence of photos. Readers pressed for time might not reach until the end of the article so you could help them along by placing it prominently in the first page. This isn't a magazine article that can immediately scanned by readers.

Besides, some readers might not read the part that says the Salcedo Market is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. What if they arrive much later only to be disappointed by the empty stalls?

"Helen Ho of Cantonese Home Kitchen proudly says that her dimsum is MSG-free."

What's wrong with MSG? MSG is just a victim of bad press, and it is the source of umami, the fifth basic taste.
  • Crabbypatty Aug 14 2009 @ 05:32pm Report Abuse
Oh, and there's a stall that sells fried tawilis. Unfortunately, they don't provide suka! Luckily, there was somebody else selling sinamak, so I bought a bottle.

    YEEEAAAAHHHHHHH
  • Crabbypatty Aug 14 2009 @ 05:15pm Report Abuse
To paraphrase 2 Live Crew, Me So Hungry.

The adobong tahong at Jaq's kitchen is highly recommended. I had some despite being scared by Anthony Bourdain off of mussels. The risk is well worth it.

The Anatolia phyllo pastries taste like bond paper stingily stuffed with cheese food. But people still buy the stuff, so maybe I'm missing something.

And I guess I either just missed them when I've gone or they weren't around at the time, but the Mexican and Thai places are definitely going to get some business out of me real soon. Like tomorrow.

My favorite stall? The Indian food one that sells sandalwood and rose flavored waters.
