10 Kiddie Snacks We Can't Forget

horlicks

Horlicks
What it is: Small, tablet-like candies made from malt and chocolate that most likely inspired the creation of Ovalteenies.
Why we loved it: You know how–when no one was looking–you used to like eating Milo chocolate powder straight from the tin? That's what eating Horlicks was like.

    STUPENDUOUS! NOSTALGIC!

every bit of description takes me back to my childhood. you are so right! its so true. i do most of the things like eating a spoonful of milo or the one you said in haw flakes. hehehehe.

but there's one guilt i want to admit: i also did ate a teaspoonful of coffeemate followed with a teaspoonful of sugar. hehehehehe. it was creamy kasi.

    @kicks:

rin-bee is alive and well. not as orange-y and tasty as it was before given the current atmosphere of health-consciousness. in other words, the banning of msg and trans-fat-laden junk.

oh yeah, where on earth is the buttered corn on the cob flavored humpy-dumpy na?
  • esken Oct 18 2009 @ 03:08pm Report Abuse

  • Cecille Oct 13 2009 @ 09:27am Report Abuse
I agree with Nicole that I really, really missed Horlicks, and in her observation too that the original White rabbit is brownish and toffe-ish. The white and chewy one where you eat the paper is Chinese version.

Chocnut and haw flakes (called titina) are constantly present in our house. They're my ultimate comfort food.

Other childhood snacks circa 60s and 70s: barquillos
dirty ice cream with all those yummy flavors of cheese, avocado, among others
belekoy, that sesame coated candy na maasim-asim and gummy, a cousin of tira-tira
ampaw, the rice crispies shaped like a ball and yellowish in color
the sugar coated peanuts in different colors the local version of M&M
    Goya chocolates
    chocolate crispies
    gold coin chocolates

Actually, some of these childhood snacks are still available in the pasalubong outlet of Cabalen restaurant.

    wala sa listahan...
wala ring brand na snacks natin nung maliliit pa tayo.

    1. sundot-kulangot.
    2. mini-buko. (yung ginagamitan mo ng thumb to get the meat part) 5cent isa. kaya sa piso marami na.
    3. yung mini-mangga at singkamas... who could forget the bagoong.. or yung asin na pagkalakilaki ng grain.

Who would forget the chips na may "free" sa loob.
mga Granny Goose Products "Tortillos", etc.
I won as much as 5pesos doon. saka yung sticky hands... and the jumping thingy.

hmmm.... yun lang yung naisip ko. ano pa ba. :)

The fact that Horlicks is no longer available saddens me to this day. Boo on the chocolate though, I liked malt!

I've always had a malt fixation. Does anyone else remember Rolling Stones? They were like Maltesers but with a poor-quality chocolate coating. I loved that stuff.

And another thing...White Rabbit, but the hard kind! It was brown and toffee-ish. I enjoyed it more than the more expensive white kind.

    MORE:
    Chikadee!
    Beef Curry Curls!
    Mr Fruit!
    Cigarette candy!
    Flag candy from the palengke!
