10 Kiddie Snacks We Can't Forget
We saved up our allowance so we could buy these so-not-good-for-us snacks after school. What was your favorite?
By: Macy Alcaraz  |   Published on: Sep 25, 2009 - 8:00am

Iced Gems
What it is: Bite-sized biscuits with differently colored icing on top. Each piece looked like a cute, mini masterpiece.
Why we loved it: It's one of those classic baon foods that you and your friends would share. Some people liked eating the biscuit first and saving the icing for later (some ate it by color, too!). What was your Iced Gem eating style?

I agree with Nicole that I really, really missed Horlicks, and in her observation too that the original White rabbit is brownish and toffe-ish. The white and chewy one where you eat the paper is Chinese version.

Chocnut and haw flakes (called titina) are constantly present in our house. They're my ultimate comfort food.

Other childhood snacks circa 60s and 70s: barquillos
dirty ice cream with all those yummy flavors of cheese, avocado, among others
belekoy, that sesame coated candy na maasim-asim and gummy, a cousin of tira-tira
ampaw, the rice crispies shaped like a ball and yellowish in color
the sugar coated peanuts in different colors the local version of M&M
    Goya chocolates
    chocolate crispies
    gold coin chocolates

Actually, some of these childhood snacks are still available in the pasalubong outlet of Cabalen restaurant.

So Horlicks was the name of those candies I ate back then hihihi!=)

POM-POMS tops my list for the cheesiness, MSG goodness they give. My one peso can but four of these!

    Others are:
    Bazooka and Texas gum
    Cherry Balls
    Peter's Butter ball
Lip's strawberry candy (Mom used to hate this coz it stains my uniform hahaha!)
    Mimi's noodles crunch
    Mighty Mouse Choco Tablets

Does anyone here remember those square choco chewy candies that are the local tootsie roll? It's packed in a bar but individually it looks like Texas gums. And those candies that looks like Aspirin tablets?=)

the pictures are very nice, you could make these into a calendar.

but anyway, the picture of white rabbit is wrong because the rabbit with the black background is the hard kind with the wax paper you can't eat!

    wala sa listahan...
wala ring brand na snacks natin nung maliliit pa tayo.

    1. sundot-kulangot.
    2. mini-buko. (yung ginagamitan mo ng thumb to get the meat part) 5cent isa. kaya sa piso marami na.
    3. yung mini-mangga at singkamas... who could forget the bagoong.. or yung asin na pagkalakilaki ng grain.

Who would forget the chips na may "free" sa loob.
mga Granny Goose Products "Tortillos", etc.
I won as much as 5pesos doon. saka yung sticky hands... and the jumping thingy.

hmmm.... yun lang yung naisip ko. ano pa ba. :)

The fact that Horlicks is no longer available saddens me to this day. Boo on the chocolate though, I liked malt!

I've always had a malt fixation. Does anyone else remember Rolling Stones? They were like Maltesers but with a poor-quality chocolate coating. I loved that stuff.

And another thing...White Rabbit, but the hard kind! It was brown and toffee-ish. I enjoyed it more than the more expensive white kind.

    Beef Curry Curls!
    Mr Fruit!
    Cigarette candy!
    Flag candy from the palengke!
