shawarmaSHAWARMA
When? Mid-1980s

How it started: In 1988, GNC Enterprises created the first local shawarma rotisserie for a client at the beginning of the shawarma craze. They were flooded with orders afterwards, as shawarma became the next lechon manok.

At its peak: You couldn't find any street corner or mall without the familiar aroma of meat roasting on a metal contraption, somebody hacking the meat into pieces and someone else piling the veggies on pita bread. With a final squirt of the yogurt sauce, everyone knew you'd given in to the fad: garlic breath.

What's left of the craze: Some food stalls still offer them (like the ancient Harrison Plaza) as well as some LRT, MRT and bus stations. Restaurants or eateries specializing in Middle Eastern cuisine are sure to have them.

yeah, it’s only available in eastwood mall, gh promenade, rob midtown & 4 seasons salcedo. i think they’re trying it out pa. well, anyway, it’s goooood! check out their fb page for more yummy details: http://facebook.com/coffeebeanphilippines

I do not remember cream puffs being a craze. Have not met anyone irl that craved for cream puffs. Also French macaroons. The price of macaroons (that time, around 18 pesos per tiny piece) is too much for ordinary people. I did see people line up for the Japanese melty chocolate, Royce nama and Go Nuts Donuts.

French Baker was first in baked goods self serve concept in Manila. They've been in the business since early 90's, earlier than Bread Talk Singapore. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think I first saw Breadtalk in Rockwell.

The Zagu or black pearl shakes craze was just the craziest. Zagu stalls and other spin-offs spurting just anywhere, even sari-sari stores attempted to make them.

Frostings cupcakes are cheaper and as good as Sonja's. You forgot to include the Zagu or black pearl shakes craze, which happened around the end of the 1990's or early of 2000.

Ria, Sonja's cupcakes are over rated and over priced. Not worth the trip to Bonifacio High and definitely a waste of money.
