10 Must-Try Veggie Burgers in Manila

Published: Feb 23, 2010 - 11:54am

Yes, Vegan Virginia, veggie burgers do exist in Manila, 10 versions of it, in fact. As more and more people explore healthier lifestyles by going vegetarian or even vegan, many are still unaware of the meatless options available here.

"There are as many fast and delicious veggie burger options as there are reasons to choose a veggie option," shares People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Director Jason Baker. "Making it meatless–and better yet, vegan–is good for your health, the environment, and especially animals." Baker, also PETA's resident food critic, along with a panel of hungry PETA staff, also sought out   the best of the country's vegetarian burgers with their "Golden Buns Awards."

Whether you've gone the vegan route or just want to go easy on the meat, Spot.ph and PETA have rounded up a list of veggie burgers in Manila that are worth chowing down on:

The Vegan Tofu Walnut Burger also gets a thumbs-up from PETA as the "Healthiest Veggie Burger" in town.

Why the need to be PETA-approved, 'cause this US-based organization is so popular? Really, they're not all that ethical all the time. I'd rather hear what the SPCA has to say.
In any case, i like vegemeat and i wanna try out the dining spots mentioned here.

Also, veggie burgers aren't always good meat alternatives, especially if you're trying to cut down on calories. And yes, they taste horrible (the ones I've tasted anyway).

The reason why I detest meatless burger is because I really has a terrible experience. I was once in a vegetarian restaurant, which I won't mention its name because it is very popular especially to the New Age types. I have no problem with vegetarian restaurants, in fact I love them to bits. Anyway, the crux of the matter is that eating their famous burger is like eating sawdust and cardboard. It was tasteless beyond belief! The only thing I can taste is the home-made mayonnaise that was slathered all over the patties. If some restaurant claim that theirs is a healthier alternative, they should be very particular where they get their vegetables. It should be organic and not an ounce of pesticide or chemical fertilizer should touch it and it was sourced from just means. Meaning, the farmer who produced it wasn't shortchanged or does not employ cheap labor.

Not only that, veggie burgers should taste diabolically delicious. That's why the burger joint that shares its name with Eng Bee Tin is still number one. Why? because their company vision is summarized in two words: langhap sarap.

I have a huge problem with this article: It doesn't say what the burgers taste like! Do they taste like meat? If not, how does one describe the taste of a meatless burger patty--is it nutty like arugula, earthy like mushroom, starchy like potato?

Taste! That's the most important thing when you write a food article!!!

Cute. But vegetarian burger? What's the point? If I want to eat vegetable, I'll get a salad. I still love the smell of seared meat and rendered fat. Thanks for the alternative choices anyway.
