CHECK IT OUT: Borough at The Podium Mall

Borough
Ground Floor, The Podium Mall (beside Gloria Maris)
Ortigas Center, Pasig City
Tel. No. 570-8906

Borough's interiors are inspired by the lofts in Brooklyn, New York

Open 24/7, Borough takes American comfort food favorites and serves them in a laid-back, loft-style space inspired by New York's artsy Brooklyn neighborhood. Wood surfaces, communal tables for large groups, and floral prints on stools and dining chairs lend a warm, eclectic vibe to the restaurant. References to New York City are strewn all over the place, including subway signs, snapshots of Manhattan life on the walls, and subway maps printed on the restaurant's paper liners.

The menu lists familiar American favorites but the Chocolate Chicken Wings (P280) might catch the adventurous eater's eyes. Borough's spicy wings are lightly flavored with cocoa powder and cinnamon, and served with a sour cream with cilantro dipping sauce. In the few weeks that they've been open, menu hits have been the Sole Anandine (P410), seasoned fish fillet with capers and almonds served on top of a bed of rice; Rothko Caesar Salad (P200) a mix of Rothko egg, Romaine lettuce and roasted tomatoes; and Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup (P240), with cheddar and mozzarella cheese in grilled homemade brioche bread served with tomato soup. If you can't finish a meal without dessert, go for the Milk and Cookies (P170)--soft, freshly-baked peanut, ginger and chocolate chip cookies are served with a bottle of fresh milk.

Borough also serves all-day breakfast meals, cocktails, and beer for the after-office crowd. On weekends, come for the brunch-only menu available from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. with unlimited refills on coffee and free-flowing mimosas for only P550.

even the burger is crap. the patty itself lacks seasoning and it tasted just a boiled piece of meat thrown on a hot grill.

the steak looks badly done and still raw -and that strip of fat looks uncooked. the sweets look divine though!

Wow that steak looks like crap. It looks like it was just put in an oven for 300 Degrees and taken out without even being rested. Note to this restaurant, if you want a real steak, get a cast iron pan. Put it on high heat. Season your steak with just salt and pepper. Then fry in the pan until till meat caramelizes. Check with hands if it's mid-rare, then put in the oven to finish cooking. That's when you slather butter all over.

Ortigas has a dearth of good casual-dining restaurants so I was glad this place opened close by. Our party was disappointed though with their orders. The food doesn't suck. But nothing stands out. But there is one thing that will make me come back--the freshly-baked cookies and cold milk. The 9 cookies in three flavors are warm and melt in your mouth. The milk is super creamy. Perfect when you need comfort food or when you wanna hang out with your kids or pamangkins on a late weekend night. My niece was over-the-moon
