12 Ice Cream Flavors of Christmas

SPOT.ph blogger Angelo Comsti tells us how a few classic Christmas treats became must-try ice cream flavors.

(SPOT.ph) As our local ice cream artisans have proven time and again, the sky’s the limit when it comes to flavors. (Read 10 Most Unusual Ice Cream Flavors to Try, 10 Pinoy Artisanal Ice Cream Makers Part 1, 10 Pinoy Artisanal Ice Cream Makers Part 2.) There's nothing that can’t be churned into this popular frozen snack. In fact, others have taken that freedom to heart a bit too much, pushing the boundaries, and concocting strange varieties that even the most adventurous foodie would hesitate to try. Dare to sample yakisoba, cow tongue, or raw horsemeat ice cream? Yes, they’re real, and regularly available at Namja Town, an indoor amusement park in Tokyo, Japan. Our artisans have yet to produce such far-out flavors (thank God for that!). But while we’re waiting (or not waiting) for them to take that route, we have these variants to get excited about: 12 stunning Christmas-inspired flavors by local makers of homemade ice cream. Enjoy!

12. Queso de Bola Ice Cream from Sebastian's

It's slightly salty and more sharp than sweet, yet it manages to stake its claim as a worthwhile dessert. Sebastian's adds generous shards of freshly grated Marca Pina queso de bola into its cheese ice cream, producing a very pronounced flavor of this unique cheese.

Price: P300/pint

11. Tablea Ice Cream from Fog City Creamery

Healthier than the average ice cream, this chocolate variant uses organic coco sugar, which has a lower glycemic index compared to the refined white sugar-all the better to go on a dessert binge this Christmas. It's rich and has a smooth mouthfeel, just like hot chocolate, albeit frozen, and more refreshing.

Price: P300/pint

10. Apple Caramel Ice Cream from Merry Moo

If we talk about classic pies for the holidays, the quintessential apple pie is always on the list. Merry Moo manages to turn the cinnamony filling into a lovely frozen treat. The deep caramel flavor prevents it from being cloying, while the apple chunks add texture and bite to every spoonful.

9. Brandied Fruitcake Ice Cream from Homemade by Roshan

Come Christmas, Roshan Samtami makes loads of this ice cream-and always runs out of it. And to think this particular flavor was just born out of kitchen play and fun. It's exactly how I remember fruitcakes taste. You'll get the full experience each time as it's loaded with fruits and nuts-and brandy!

Price: P800/quart

8. Turtle Pie Ice Cream from Pint

There are three major elements in a turtle pie: pecan, caramel, and chocolate. This Pint ice cream has all of these-in lavish amounts. The ice cream makers didn't hold back and, as a result, it has become one really fudgy dessert that will have you finishing one scoop after another.

7. Puto Bumbong Ice Cream from Sebastian's

What I love about Sebastian's ice cream is the flavors are unmistakable and very true to the original. Everything in Ian Carandang’s Filipino kakanin ice cream collection is a testament to that. The puto bumbong flavor has the Christmas classic’s deep purple color and flavor down pat. Completing the illusion? Fresh grated coconut on top!

Price: P430/pint

6. Fruits and Nuts Deluxe Ice Cream from Fog City Creamery

Not a fan of fruitcake? Well, you might just like this version. Fog City takes the familiar flavors of fruitcake and incorporates them into this decadent ice cream. Apricots give it a soft chew while pistachios and almonds give it crunch and nuttiness. Despite all these other ingredients, the taste of brandy is still remarkable.

Price: P320/pint

5. Biscotti Ice Cream from Merry Moo

Fans of these twice-baked cookies will certainly find pleasure in this ice cream. Before churning, toasted anise seeds are infused in the milk and cream base. Then, toasted almonds and raisins are tossed in, producing a creamy and crunchy version of biscotti that rivals the original cookie in our list of favorite treats.

4. Tsokolate Eh Ice Cream from Sebastian's

The hue alone already gives you a hint of how rich and deep the flavor is in this ice cream. The texture is superb, velvety and slippery, and the flavor of the tsokolate eh gracefully envelops the palate.

Price: P300/pint

3. Brandied Cherries Ice Cream from Fog City Creamery

This spiked dessert will have you eating in high spirits-after one bite, that is. Dark red cherries macerated in deluxe brandy are mixed into the velvety ice cream, giving the latter a beautiful blush, as well as the distinct spirit of brandy. It's not too strong to turn you off, nor too light that you won’t be able to taste it.

2. Eggnog Nutella Ice Cream from Pint

This ice cream ingeniously combines two beloved items-eggnog, a spiked and spiced milk punch, and Nutella, a popular brand of chocolate-hazelnut spread. The marriage of the two has resulted in ice cream infused with nutmeg and rum, with swirls of the luscious spread.

1. Bibingka Espesyal Ice Cream from Sebastian's

This traditional Christmas rice cake has been transformed into ice cream and owner Ian Carandang does his best to really capture the flavors. His version inherits the slightly charred bibingka flavor thanks to the addition of chewy cake chunks. He even added salted duck egg, queso de bola, and coconut flakes for that authentic bibingka experience.

Price: P430/pint
