Marc Abaya, Barbie Almabis join fight to actively adapt to climate change

Published: Nov 9, 2009 - 8:00am

"Stand Up," a collaboration of over 40 local artists united in song to stand up and be ready against climate change, was launched at Alliance Francaise de Manille on October 29.   The song, which brings together musicians like Karl Roy, Jett Pangan, Marc Abaya, Cooky Chua, and Noel Cabangon, was composed by guitarist Boogie Romero of Kjwan. It is part of a campaign called Design Against the Elements, spearheaded by Illac Diaz, the only Filipino to be included in CNNgo.com's "Hot List: 135 People to Watch". The campaign was initially called Designer Village Challenge, a global competition that brings together the brightest minds in architecture to create a blueprint for building greener, more cost-efficient and better homes designed to withstand the storms and strong typhoons that visit the Philippines annually.

"The collaboration of around 40 to 50 artists is overwhelming. It is a song about the need for a lifestyle change, but at the same time, [to] brace for more challenges," Diaz shared at the launch. "Ondoy is not a linear kind of problem. If you're in a country at the center of climate change, where you have a pattern of storms, pa'no na?"

Recording started even before typhoon Ondoy left 80 percent of Metro Manila under floodwater. Diaz had planned on bringing the country's best musicians together to record a song, a call to action to adapt to climate change.

Artist Jamie Wilson, who was present at the launch, said that he was honored to be asked to be part of "Stand Up."   According to the veteran theater actor-singer, recording took so little of his time but it felt good to be doing something long-term that went beyond relief efforts.

"Stand Up" will soon be heard on the radio and a rockumentary about the song and the campaign is in the works.

Nice song! It really reflects the current situation that we are facing right now. It's nice to know that those artists are doing their part in generating such awareness through their God-given talent.

All of us have our own part in converting climate change from fiction into a reality. Now, we should also be part of something worthy- to take our share in preventing climate change to be part of our beautiful future. Let's stop this unwanted phenomenon from destroying our planet.

I laud the initiative Mr. Diaz took without waiting for something like Ondoy to happen. We all need to see the signs around us and DO SOMETHING ABOUT THEM! This is a much-needed social awakening, an important message wrapped in beautiful form -- what's not to love about it? :)

This is an interesting article. It moved me to see how Filipino artists are working as one to send out a message to us Filipinos that we should brace ourselves from other calamities to come. This song gives out a very important message. We really have to get ready.

But nevertheless, there's nothing we Filipinos can't face right? Not to mention, our will to arise from the problems that keep affecting our country. We still strive to make Philippines a very peaceful country to live in and for that, we definitely deserve a round of applause. GO FILIPINOS!

This is a really good start. We've seen how much destruction Ondoy brought about. Many are still recovering from the impacts of Ondoy. We can't allow another "Ondoy" to happen again, and this move is a really good way to get awareness kick into people's systems.

Climate change is a threat that does not discriminate. And with the Philippines being a country that gets battered more often than others, the Filipino should be extra concerned.

Efforts around the world to bring awareness towards the cause have been going on for quite sometime now. I think it's great these 40 filo artists took the time our of their busy schedules to contribute to the global movement.

    Kudos!

One of the people I look up to is Illac Diaz. He is like the Clark Kent of our time. Clark Kent in a way that he never ceases to think of things that would help people, especially those in dire need, to be helped and stand up on their own feet again.

It’s really amazing that these artists gathered together for a really good cause. Kudos to Illac, the artists and the people behind the song and video. This song is such a powerful tool to reach out not just to every Filipino but to every human being here on earth.

We are all aware that climate change is taking its tool nowadays all over the world re: flood, forest fires, etc. Instead of us dripping down on these, as we say, “man-made calamitiesâ€Â, we need to adapt to the challenges of climate change. Now is the time to STAND UP!

Most of us Filipino's naman, e musically inclined. So it's really a BIG (<<-talagang big yan ah? heks) help. Hays :(
