10 Classic Cartoons We Loved Before There Was Cable

Back in the day when you didn't have a hundred channels to choose from, there was a treasure trove of cartoons on free TV. Technological advances aside, why does it seem like they just don't make them like they used to? SPOT.ph gets nostalgic for our top 10 favorites:

Candy Candy
Circa: mid-1980s
Why we loved it: "American" (although obviously Japanese-created, with the requisite saucer eyes and button nose) orphan Candy was adorable with her blond, curly hair, and her frilly frocks, and pink bows. She, with her fellow orphan friends, would always impart a good lesson about being kind to others. It was pretty much the first animated soap opera.
Favorite: When Terry gives Candy her first kiss in summer school.

Rainbow Brite
Circa: 1984 to 1985
Why we loved it: Because we had the dolls–I had Rainbow Brite and Shy Violet, how about you? Rainbow Brite was all about how everything in life would be more beautiful with color. No to black and white!
Favorite: Starlite and Twink, Rainbow Brite's sidekicks.

Care Bears
Circa: 1985 to 1988
Why we loved it: Three words. Care Bear Stare!
Favorite: It would be hard to choose just one from the Bears of Care-a-lot and their Cousins in the Forest of Feelings. Did you know that there are over 50 Care Bears and Cousins? Who was your favorite?

    if my memory serves me right..CandyCandy was shown back 1979 kasabay nito ang Heidi,Paul in Fantasy Island,Alakazam sa Channel 7. Pinalitan nito ang robot cartoons banned by Marcos...Voltes V , Daimos, Mekanda Robot, UFO Grendizer. In Channel 9 you have Danguard Ace and Balatak. In Channel 13 may Getta Robot, pinalitan sya ng RonRon kamukha sya ni CandyCandy may powers nga lang parang sailor moon ang tema. Any comments from 70's kids?

    naalala nyo pa ba yung dating cartoons sa ABC 5 yung may chinese calendar animals tapos parang may kanya kanya silang powers ang mga character baboy,bull,etc tapos pupunta sila sa kwento like three little pigs para lang ayusin ito?

    I remember watching "Romeo and the Black brothers" or in Tagalog "Ang Munting Pangarap ni Romeo"

    Hindi ko mapigilang umiyak everytime I watch this.

    I watched everything that was mentioned here except candy candy. I'm addicted to Daimos a lot. But unfortunately, hindi kumpleto ung list especially hindi nasama ung shaider, mask rider black and bioman. It's all in the eighties.

    I remember there was Saturday Fun Machine on Channel 9, where you get to watch cartoons non-stop from 7 am to 12 noon. My mother would get mad, kasi it's nearly lunch time and my sisters and I are still on bed watching cartoons. Dun namin pinapanuod yung Superfriends, the Flinstones, Roman Holiday. Naalala nyo rin ba ang SpaceGhost, Smurfs (Papa Smurf and Smurfette etc?)and, Fraggle Rock? Those were the days gone by. When cartoons were both fun and educational.
    Medyo dun ako nahasa sa English language, kaya I really don't agree with tagalizing cartoons. But don't get me wrong, I am not being unpatriotic. I just felt it will help children polish their talent in speaking the King's language.

    i think this list is st*p*d. yeah girly nga. parang di niresearch at parang whimsical ang pagkakapili jhust because the writer liked the mentioned cartoons. carebears, rainbow brite? similar track. repetitive! sana ang title "my favorite cartoons i loved before there was cable". or sana by year nya ginawa. ang broad ng topic. candy candy? seriously? kung girly ang list na to? where''s sailormoon?
    seriously spot.ph, you gotta think about what you publish in here. this is not just ranting because m favorite wasnt in the list. ni walang parameters? criteria? or reason why "we loved" these cartoons! just mere descriptions. the writer is st*p*d

    Flying House! Woooh i love that! I hope Spot also comes up with an article about those 10-o-clock a.m. cartoons in ABS-CBN in the 90s (hello Sarah and Munting Prinsesa, Cedie, Polyanna, Keiko and Friends, and what\'s that other one with the \"tore ni Babel\" thingy?) hehe nakakamiss ang childhood days! :D

    Solid list. Not my favorites, but the ones here are very iconic.

    The "Circa" you posted isn't consistent though. For instance: Jem and the Holograms was aired during the 1980s in America, but even if it did air here during that time it probably continued airing until the 90s. Meanwhile, Voltes V aired in Japan during the 70s.

    Don't forget She-Ra and Thundercats!

    I loved watching Superbook and Flying House when I was a kid. Now, I have my pamangkins watch it too (you can buy the VCD's in select music stores).

    ...Do you guys still remember Snorkles? or the ShorTales, even had the Sticker Books for these cartoons. Life was much more simplier back then.. wala pang mga PSP.

    Kulang nga! Ang sabi classic cartoons, here are the real cartoon classics - Gumby (early 60's pa yan at black and white pa), yung mga Marvel Classics like Captain America, The Submariner, The Hulk, Superman, Batman and Robin, Spider Man, Iron Man etc. How about Disney Classics - Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, etc. Yung mga Hanna Barberra Classics at other Toon Classics - Speedy Gonzales, Tweety Bird, Sylvester etc. Also love the Japanese Classic Anime - Voltes V, Daimos at Mazinger Z.

    this list needs to be extended. where's moby d*ck, voltron, garfield and friends, denver the last dinosaur, and teenage mutant ninja turtles? isama mo na ang dragonball bago pa nauso ang anime sa pilipinas. hindi pa kalat ang cable nun kaya IBC 13, ABC 5, at RPN 9 and source for cartoons. i also miss the claymation shows like gumby and mr. bogus.

    Voltes V started as early as 1978. I remembered watching it Sunday evening and then Marcos banned it because of....whatever it is....and then it was replaced by The Muppet Show.

    Naalala ko pagkatapos ng My Little Pony and Friends, susunod ang Glowworms. Favorite ko yun. Tuwing sabado ng umaga. :D

    Although hindi ito cartoon, gusto ko yung New Zoo Revue. Tuwing 5pm yun ng weekdays sa Ch13. Bago magbioman pa ata yun. hehehe
