What's all the fuss about Eat Bulaga's #AlDub love team?
There might even be a movie.
(SPOT.ph) If you've recently looked at Twitter trending topics, you might have noticed #AlDub (and variations of it) on the list of hashtags. Confused? Clueless? We've got you covered.
#AlDub is a portmanteau of actor Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza, or more popularly known as Yaya Dub. (The 20-year-old is tagged as the "Dubsmash Queen," thanks to her viral Dubsmash videos.) The unlikely love team made their debut on Eat Bulaga as part of the Juan for All, All for Juan segment.
Sparks first flew on the July 16 episode. Alden had been a co-host for the show for about two months when they were introduced to each other. According to director Mike Tuviera, the popular love team was an accident. The staff found out that Maine had a crush on Alden, so they asked the latter to make an appearance as a surprise. Its spontaneity proved to be a hit.
Since then, #AlDub spawned a live "KalyeSerye," complete with an elaborate, forbidden love storyline co-starring Paolo Ballesteros, Wally Bayola (who plays the meddling Lola Nidora), and Jose Manalo (the man whom Yaya Dub is forced to marry). The two have yet to meet—on the show and even in real life.
The mini-series has been doing so well that Eat Bulaga has reportedly been conquering noontime ratings. In a recent interview with PEP.ph, Direk Mike also said that there may be plans to even do a movie, depending "on the clamor of the fans."
