Contemporary dance artist Myra Beltran collaborates with video artist Sherad Anthony Sanchez and sound designer Teresa Barrozo to choreograph a deconstructed version of Virgie Moreno's play The Onyx Wolf / Itim Asu.
The Onyx Wolf / Itim Asu has been staged in various versions in the early 1970s after it won the Cultural Center of the Philippines' 1969-1970 National Historical Play Contest. Its first staging, directed by the late National Artist Rolando Tinio, became the inaugural performance of the CCP Little Theatre (Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino).
"This drama is a play within a play, and contains within it the story of La Loba Negra, how the Mexican wife of Gov. General Bustamante, one of the more 'exceptional' governor generals in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era, avenges his death," says Beltran.
Presented by Myra Beltran's Dance Forum, Itim Asu 1719-2009 features the University of the Philippines Dance Company with guest lead dancers Marielle Alonzo and Reagan Cornelio.
Itim Asu 1719-2009 will have a free (though reservations are required) special show on February 24, 7 p.m. at the Carlos Romulo Theater, RCBC Plaza, Makati City. For reservations, call 0906-2943895.
