Controversy surrounding the new list of National Artists has reached fever pitch among the country's most renowned artists with the naming of Cecille Guidote-Alvarez (as National Artist for Theater) and Carlo J. Caparas (National Artist for Visual Arts and Film). National Artist for Visual Arts in 2006 Ben Cabrera has called the list "a mockery," and will boycott the awards ceremony along with fellow National Artists Arturo Luz, Napoleon Abueva and Bienvenido Lumbera.
What does it mean to be a National Artist and how exactly do you get the honor? SPOT.ph gives you the lowdown.
The Order of National Artists (Orden ng Gawad Pambansang Alagad ng Sining) is the highest national recognition given to Filipino individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts; namely, Music, Dance, Theater, Visual Arts, Literature, Film and Broadcast Arts, and Architecture and Allied Arts. The award is jointly administered by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and bestowed by the President of the Philippines upon recommendation by both the NCCA and the CCP.
The awardees are measured by their vision, insight, creativity, imagination and technical proficiency in expressing Filipino culture, tradition and aspirations. Started in 1972, the award was established under Proclamation No. 1001 to give due recognition to artists. The first award was given posthumously to artist Fernando Amorsolo the year after. In 2003, the National Artist Award was raised to the level of a Cultural Order, meaning the award is equal in rank to the Order of National Scientists and the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan.
It is indeed a mockery. They are not the best artist but personal choice of Arroyo.

Isa lang ang masasabi ko. Mga walang delicadeza si Cecile Guidote Alvarez, kailangan niyang tanggihan at ibalik ang parangal, dahil ito ay magiging mitsa ng kaniyang buhay! Hindi siya tatantanan ng mga kapwa niyang manlilikha ng sinig habang siya ay nabubuhay. kaya maaga pa lamang at ibalik na niya ito sa kinauukulan. Ganun din sa pagpili kay Carlo J. Caparaz bilang Pambansang Alagad ng Sining. Ano ang ipapalabas niya? Ang kanyang mga masaker movies? May higit na nakakalamang kay CJC, nandiyan si Mars Ravelo na lumikha ng Darna at Dyesebel? Larry Alcala at marami pang iba. Hayyyy naku. Wala akong problema kay Pitoy at sa mga ibang pinarangalan. Hayyy Pilipinas, pati ba naman sa sining, may pulitika? At may palakasan?
if i were alcuaz, mañosa and the others.. i will never accept the award... ayokong mahanay kay caparas at alvarez... i'll cringe...

Tama, if i were them, i would be ashamed to receive the award. Lalo na kasi even a few months ago revealed na yung choices ng mga committee, so halatang halata the names who were not on that list are not really deserving! they don't have the recognition of the peers and cultural community. nakakahiya...pero sa tingin ko, mga walang hiya naman yan, specially si pitoy at si guidote alvarez. makakapal ang balat nila!

Nakakalungkot...nag-attend ako ng tribute concert para kay Dr.Ramon Santos. Siya ang karapat-dapat na maging Pambansang Alagad ng Sining. Hindi makatarungan ang ginawa ni GMA na isingit si Caparas. Wala talaga siyang alam. Gusto yata nya na sa lahat ng aspeto ay may kabalbalan siyang ginawa.
If there is one that deserve the national artist award which overdue for along time sya ay walang iba kundi Mss. Nora Aunor. Pero mabuti nalang at hindi sya nasama sa grupon itong. Kawawang mga deserving at napasama sila sa mga yaks. Nora a multitalented actress shared her talents and gave her contributions not only sa loob ng Pilipinas kundi kahit sa labas ng bansa not once pero madalas. And because of that they rather to choose iyong mga hmmm at hmmm. Now I'ts confirm na si GMA ay bulag she just sign not knowing what she is signing . Siguro next time sasali rin niya ang kanyang pangalan

Gloria obviously does not know the meaning of art. CJC and Moreno's inclusion clearly shows she failed to understand that commercialism is the anti-art. Commercialism and art are at the opposite end of the pole. A person's success or popularity has nothing to do with his artistic achievement. And with Alvarez' inclusion there, this pseudo president only validated what everybody else had known a long time ago, she has no delicadeza. But then again, for someone who clings to power like a leech and sucks this country's resources like a tick, what else can we expect? May God save us from this delusional queen. p.s. there really should only be 6 categories. Personally, I think Architecture is not art. But this should be debated some other time. Besides, I'd rather Architecture be there, than fashion design. Fashion is art? Sheeezz I think I just vomited a little in my mouth.
This form of mockery in Philippine Arts had never ocurred even the time of MARCOS. I despise that the highest honors given to Filipino Artists is now blemished with ridicule and controversy.
As long as Gloria is in power, Philippines will be the laughing stock around the world. The more you hate her, the more she will will do the wrong thing to show to us the she is in control. She is a greedy woman.
Not a good list IMO...I would have to agree with Leo Martinez with possibly inducting someone like Celso Ad. Castillo. I feel that CJC doesn't deserve the induction. Oh dear, pati nba naman sa mundo ng sining, me nanganagilam pa rin?
