Strength, courage, goodness, grace, and sacrifice are words that come to mind when you think of heroes, altruistic attributes no one exemplified better than the Mother (and Father) of all modern-day Philippine heroes, Cory and Ninoy Aquino. Leading lives that were sterling examples of integrity and honesty in their pursuit of truth and freedom, the two influenced our thinking and changed our lives and those of generations to come.

On National Heroes' Day, we need to be reminded of some of their most meaningful words and ideas that ring true today more than ever: Ninoy Aquino once said, "We should not depend on one man, we should depend on all of us. 'All of us' is expandable in the cause for freedom and therefore I say stand up now and be a leader, and when all of us are leaders, we will expedite the cause of freedom." Cory Aquino is best remembered for this quote: "I just do whatever it is that I believe I should do, regardless of the risks to my life…I would rather die a meaningful death than to live a meaningless life."

While dying for one's country can certainly catapult one to heroic heights, many ordinary people leading extraordinary daily lives continue to work for the greater good just doing what they do best and what they think is right. SPOT.ph brings you 10 such people worthy of being called our heroes of today: (In no particular order.)

At some point, this list has taken the title hero too lightly and out-of-context. Ang mga Filipinos talaga, kung hindi haters, melodramatic.. both easily swept, easily drawn by emotions. Mababaw! Mamatay ka lang at ma-TV ka, hero ka na!!

More than the popular, sensational and visible individuals included on this list, it is the everyday individuals (examples courtesy of Bok), the entrepreneurs, farmers, our OFWs, OUR PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS (whom should we get inspirations from) who should be given recognitions (Eugene Domingo, I am your fan!). Ms. Grace Padaca deserves to be included.

Just to add: I think ma-re-recognize din naman ang mga films natin kahit hindi tungkol sa sex, prostitution, kabaklaan... puro na lang ganun ang theme.. Bakit yung "Magnifico"(so far, the best Filipino film ever, ganda ng istorya, hindi draggy, hindi cheesy, super! and hindi nag-capitalize sa special effects, artista, lalung-lalo na sa sex)? It's been recognized and won a lot of international awards. Let's do more films of this sort.

Bottomline: We should think more than twice, more often.

I loooove that pic of Eugene! Finally, a woman is being mobbed by the press for her talent, and not just her looks. :)

Who on earth is Eugene Domingo and Juana Change? Does the editor of this page stand by these allegations that they represent the working title: "10 Heroes of Our Time?" I would rather have voted for Tim Yap for introducing the Filipinos to the other side of lavishness, at least through him, we see a man who we do not desire to be. How about the HAPINOY team? Leading social entrepreneurship by promoting, teaching and growing sari-sari stores across the Philippines linking well over thousands of sari-sari stores. Where are the business leaders? Entrepreneurs? Whom without, our citizens would not have the funds to do all these "political" wit some of your heroes promote so adamantly. No offense to the two individuals I just mentioned on this post, but I personally believe there are more individuals who are more credible and deserving of those "spot"(s)(no pun intended) than they are.

Bok, drawing attention to fellow Filipinos who need help is not vanity. I don't see how "buying medicine for local area hospitals" is better than conducting medical missions, when those missions offer free health services. The point is that people are actually DOING what they can to actually help, rather than just donating money and leaving it at that.
  • Bok Sep 01 2009 @ 02:41pm Report Abuse
What makes them heroes? In a country where people don't have access to health care, quality education, and justice, this is just vanity. We should get our priorities straight. The money used for this expedition would be better off buying computers for public schools, the funds for medical missions would be better off being used to buy medicine for the local area hospitals. This is a personal endeavor for the participants, that's being marketed as a national achievement.

When will we learn as Filipinos to get our priorities straight, and concentrate on what matters for national development, and not just bragging rights.

A hero is a pedestrian who crosses on the pedestrian lane and rides in a loading/unloading zone. A hero is a motorist whether public or private who obeys traffic rules and regulations and basic road courtesy. A hero is your honest taxpayer. A hero is someone who volunteers his services to the under privilege irregardless or financial reward. Heroes are underpaid soldiers, doctors, policemen, nurses, public school teachers, who perform their job, despite the fact that they are underpaid.

Hindi lang dapat bangon Pilipibas, dapat Pilipinas imulat ang mata sa kototohanan. Hindi puro pa cute lang.

Where is the list of the 10 heroes?
  • NBMXW Sep 01 2009 @ 11:49am Report Abuse
    Vomit
You do not have to die for your country to be a hero. In fact, we need more ordinary heroes to make our country great. This list is a good start.
  • vomit Sep 01 2009 @ 10:37am Report Abuse
While mostly a solid list, this proves that we use the term "hero" too lightly.
