DENNIS ROLDAN

Bio: Former actor and Quezon City Congressman

Crime time: In 2005, Roldan, who is Mitchell Gumabao in real life, was arrested for allegedly masterminding the kidnapping of a Filipino-Chinese boy. He is now out on bail.

Mob appeal: On a very good day, Roldan looks like an Asian Richard Gere. He oozes contrabida sexiness.

Burden of proof: The kidnapped young boy positively identified Roldan as one of his kidnappers.

Pop culture yields: It's a case of life imitating art for Roldan, who excelled in playing villains in movies like Markang Bungo: The Bobby Ortega Story, where he played a criminal named Boy Demonyo. Roldan's life is so ready for a biopic. He could probably play himself. He still looks good enough.

marcial_amaMARCIAL "BABY" AMA
Bio: Ordinary young man from a modest background

Crime time: While serving a prison sentence at the New Bilibid Prisons in Muntinlupa in 1958, Ama became involved in a gang and participated in a fight that resulted in the death of nine inmates. It is widely believed that he died in the electric chair after being given the death penalty upon conviction, though a 1965 Supreme Court decision shows that his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment.

Mob appeal: His delicate, boyish good looks made him an easy target in prison. The perception that he didn't start out as a hardened criminal, but was reportedly serving a prison sentence for stealing money to help a friend, also helped him gain the public's sympathy.

Burden of proof: His proven involvement in the prison fight, as well as the gruesome way in which the nine inmates were killed (with one of them beheaded) resulted in the Supreme Court's affirmation of his conviction along with his 13 co-accused.

Pop culture yields: The 1976 movie Bitayin Si Baby Ama (starring Rudy Fernandez and Alma Moreno), 1990's Anak Ni Baby Ama, as well as 2002's Hari ng Selda: Anak ni Baby Ama 2 (both topbilled by Robin Padilla).

sen trillanes et al are great men. i really hate corrupt people. that's what we are now because of these corrupt people. corrupt people should be put in trial and let's see if they really are proud of themselves to face each and every one of us.

you're asking for erap to be in the list.. Hmn.. Spot should create the female version of this as well.. # 1 would be GMA! (but she's not telegenic at all)

This didn't sit well with me because it does romanticize hatred and violence, as someone already said.

And to the person who said "At the end of the day, this article sells. There is readership. The readers are intelligent enough. Let them decide": That's st*p*d with a capital STUPID. Let me rephrase what you said: "At the end of the day. this product sells. There's a market. The consumers are intelligent enough. Let them decide." Now change product to, I don't know, guns, drugs, slaves, and let's see if it still rings true.

Not because we can decide doesn't mean we have to. That's why there are editors. Wnd the SPOT editors are doing a fabulous job. By the way, did you sense the sarcasm? A warning ("So, against your better judgment, have fun going through our politically incorrect list of bad boys who look too good to be locked up") doesn't change the fact that your list is insensitive. It's like saying, oh I know killing is bad but I'll murder you anyway. Attempting that the list is not PC doesn't make it more PC.

But what really gets my goat is how you, oh amazing people of Spot, think this is actually a great idea for an article. It probably came from someone's elitist head. Wake up and smell the Ilog Pasig, darling.
  • callingallidiot Feb 05 2010 @ 07:06pm Report Abuse
bakit di kasama si ERAP dito? di ba milyon milyon yung na corrupt nya from taong bayan? eh di bad boy sya...di ba?
btw...hayden can not be considered bad boy, he's just perverted good looking maniac.
Pwede mag feature din kayo ng mga Chakang bad boys like: the ampatuans, ritchie de horsie, mayor sanchez and the rest of the pangit who got famous...for fun man kaya, sige i-todo na natin itong humor.

    @igeramos

I agree! Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz to those who didn't get it.
Mayor Sanchez LOL!!! In fairness shiny ang hair niya. Dennis Roldan is on page 4.
  • igeramos Jan 31 2010 @ 05:47pm Report Abuse
Yummy yummy yummy. Where's Dennis Roldan? Or Mayor Sanchez? Don't they deserve to be here as well?
  • igeramos Jan 31 2010 @ 05:45pm Report Abuse
    Hmmmmmm. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
  • ginuj Jan 30 2010 @ 12:16pm Report Abuse
Yep, Lourd's Holiday in Maguindanao is a fine example. Hard to miss the irony in that one. This on the other hand whizzes by me completely. Ironically challenged, I guess.
  • Tink Jan 30 2010 @ 02:22am Report Abuse
I agree with J. Lourd is funny to me, but this wasn't. To each his or her own, then. :) Cheers.
  • Ana Jan 30 2010 @ 01:22am Report Abuse
@ Iron Man - FYI, May tatlo naman kasing klase ng irony ang I think aware ka naman dito. May mga instances rin na nag-express ng Verbal Irony (or pwede ring Sarcasm) ung writer. As for the irony you refer to, that's another kind: Situational Irony. At tama ka, wala talagang lugar dito kahit saan 'yung Alanis M. na dep*n*syon ng irony, and I think Leela is not at all alluding to that either.

Boys and girls, baka lang lumutang uli ang isyu ng Irony, eto ung 3 dep*n*syo ng Irony. I rest my case.

    Spot.ph ROCKS!!!!

Types of Irony in a nutshell:

    * Verbal irony is a disparity of expression and intention: when a speaker says one thing but means another, or when a literal meaning is contrary to its intended effect. An example of this is sarcasm.
    * Dramatic irony is a disparity of expression and awareness: when words and actions possess a significance that the listener or audience understands, but the speaker or character does not.
    * Situational irony is the disparity of intention and result: when the result of an action is contrary to the desired or expected effect. Likewise, cosmic irony is disparity between human desires and the harsh realities of the outside world (or the whims of the gods). By some definitions, situational irony and cosmic irony are not irony at all.

My husband Jason looks like Jason Ivler,so much, he threatens to shoot everyone who will say he does.
  • Iron Man Jan 29 2010 @ 09:54pm Report Abuse
you must have studied at the Alanis Morissette School of Irony because there is no irony in this article, but there is a sense of irony in that people are actually defending this drivel, on basis of humor and irony. now THAT is ironic, don't you think?
  • Lala Jan 29 2010 @ 08:28pm Report Abuse
    @ Leela: AMEN.
  • Leela Jan 29 2010 @ 08:07pm Report Abuse
Hay ibang level na talaga ang irony-deficiency nating mga Pinoy. Napaka-literal!
  • Jay Jan 29 2010 @ 05:57pm Report Abuse
"We need to be reminded OR made aware that this way of thinking EXISTS in this country."

I totally agree, Lala. However, making a top 10 list such as this one is not exactly the best way to do that. Don't get me wrong, I like funny, I like social commentary and I'm not at all politically correct. Sana lang prinesent yung article in a smarter perspective and not as if it was merely musings of a gushing 17-year old girl. When Lourd writes social commentary (about K, the Senate or the "Holiday in Maguindanao" in WOTL), it is thick with wit and sarcasm. Or...baka hindi lang ako yung target demographic ng article na ito. I'm not a gushing 17-year old girl, after all. :)
  • Lala Jan 29 2010 @ 05:22pm Report Abuse
How is it insensitive? It's actually mocking some of us who are st*p*d enough to eschew evidence over good looks. It's a social commentary at best. We need to be reminded OR made aware that this way of thinking EXISTS in this country. Otherwise, mauulit lang uli ang kabastusan ng Daniel Smith case sa bansang ito. Stop being PC -- wala tayo sa Amerika. We need big doses of reality, people.
  • Joker Jan 29 2010 @ 04:51pm Report Abuse
Sense of humor? Look at the post-mortem pictures of the Vizcondes and try finding whatever it is you find funny in them?

It's pathetic and worrying that sometimes we find entertainment in the darkest, most tragic, and strangest of places.
  • Pinoyrocks Jan 29 2010 @ 04:32pm Report Abuse
Watch out, Bryanboy! Spot rivals your blog for being superfluous . These criminals are cold-blooded. Iverson allegedly shot a person in broad daylight, hid in a basement, refused to surrender, and even put up a fight when arrested. Even a retard who happened to witness the bloody scene would surely felt remorse. A normal person will shudder on this topic and here is Spot giggling like teenagers, thus, makes me wonder what does the word “humour’ mean.
  • Jay Jan 29 2010 @ 04:09pm Report Abuse
Sa mga magulang po ng victims, kung mabasa man ho ninyo ito: sabi ng mga readers ng Spot, huwag daw po tayong maging sensitive, guys. Sense of humor daw po ang pairalin
  • Sister Stella Jan 29 2010 @ 03:55pm Report Abuse
I wonder kung yung mga nainis e lalaki at yung natawa e mga babae? Admit it, girls (and badings!), may effect yung kaguwapuhan nila at i'm sure napagusapan ninyo. Doesnt mean we condone their acts, wala lang, kyut lang sana hahahaha
  • kabarj Jan 29 2010 @ 03:44pm Report Abuse
Are we really losing our sense of humor?
Dont be too sensitive, guys.. tsk
  • Jay Jan 29 2010 @ 02:55pm Report Abuse
    Hi rachel,

I think the reason why we find this article tasteless and un-funny is because we do have a sense of humor. And sadly, there is nothing humorous about good-looking criminals. Criminals who have comedic timing (like Erap) pwede pa
  • gossipmonger Jan 29 2010 @ 02:31pm Report Abuse
ay hindi pa bad boy si hayden kho? hehe
  • rachel Jan 29 2010 @ 01:07pm Report Abuse
get a sense of humor, people.
  • Belinda Jan 29 2010 @ 08:23am Report Abuse
For me, I enjoyed this article. But it doesn't mean na porke guwapo sila, di na sila dapat parusahan. Di naman ako ganun katanga to take it literally. Lighten up pls!
  • Bartolini Jan 29 2010 @ 07:54am Report Abuse
Oh, kudos too to the writer and site for elevating these individuals by praising their looks! Some of these scum have been responsible for snuffing out the lives of the innocent and yet you choose to almost shallowly overlook this evil inconvenience to point out just how cute the perpetrators are! When will we learn to see and acknowledge evil as it really is in all its naked glory?
  • Bartolini Jan 29 2010 @ 07:44am Report Abuse
I hope that the guilty all end up in real jail so that they can all get in touch with their inner girly-girl every night when the lights go out.
  • tink Jan 29 2010 @ 05:28am Report Abuse
I feel like this article is in bad taste. Ang insensitive lang talaga ng dating.
  • Print Jan 29 2010 @ 03:54am Report Abuse
To be fair to SPOT, specifically stated naman na "against your better judgment, have fun going through our politically incorrect list..."

But this I find questionable: "...bad boys who look too good to be locked up." Dahil guapo masyadong 'good' to be locked up?

I think SPOT should try to not just entertain, but to educate and inform. Like the words, trends and websites articles.

Nevertheless, congrats to you guys, rousing people to discuss! Very active audience! If only all readers would like SPOT readers :)
  • T.A. Jan 29 2010 @ 03:41am Report Abuse
I have to agree that this article doesn't sit well with me. It's just in bad taste. All I can think is if I was one of the victim's family members and saw that my child/brother/nephew's murderer had 10,000 fans on Facebook or women who have 'crushes' on them, it would infuriate me beyond all reason.

If people can overlook the fact that someone is a murderer, drug dealer or rapist just because he is 'attractive', I have never been more disappointed or disgusted in the human race.
  • Sputnik Jan 28 2010 @ 10:51pm Report Abuse
At the end of the day, this article sells. There is readership. The readers are intelligent enough. Let them decide.
  • Jay Jan 28 2010 @ 10:00pm Report Abuse
Wow, Spot. An article on murderers, drug dealers and kidnappers. Why? Because they are "telegenic." This is not even funny nor ironic. Buti yung mga articles ni Lourd hindi ganito ka babaw at insensitive. Since the geniuses at Spot may have conjured this article one editorial meeting when one of the editors blurted out, "Pero in fairness, ang gwapo ni Ivler, ha!", how about this for an article? Top 10 Cars of Politicians. Or perhaps, Top 10 Hurricanes That Made Us Feel Patriotic. It could even follow the same format -

    Ondoy
Bio: Killed 246 people and cost $100 million
Pop culture yields: Patriotic T-shirts and tweets from Kanye West and Paris Hilton
  • Jun Pyo Jan 28 2010 @ 07:37pm Report Abuse
is it antonio trillanes IV? and not III? how about checking the facts Spot.ph. i guess that's why we still are voting for mestizos. we still are living in the spanish occupation
  • Pinoyrocks Jan 28 2010 @ 07:32pm Report Abuse
What an impressive article,Spot! Romanticising crimes of hatred and violence. And what's next? Majority of the population forgets easily. No wonder there are Filipinos who still vote for the Marcoses and Estrada.Their reason-Let's forgive and forget.
Kudos to Spot for thinking of new reasons!

There are Spotters who are looking for Kho. Please give him an editorial article.

  • SB Jan 28 2010 @ 01:25pm Report Abuse
