Lourd de Veyra: A short history of showbiz in Pinoy politics

Lourd de Veyra | Published: Feb 25, 2010 - 4:47pm

"Madali lang tumakbo. Paano kung manalo?"

- Dolphy

Jamby Madrigal has that distinct ability to effortlessly hurt other people's feelings in the most minimal of sentences. "I have seen the folly of my ways," she said during the Inquirer debate at UP. This, when she was asked to respond to charges that she herself had once upon a time shamelessly utilized celebrity fairy-dust. Under her employ during campaign season circa 2004 had been Judy Ann Santos, box office princess, whose admission of hurt over Madrigal's statement made primetime headlines. "Next time na may i-e-endorse ako," the actress said, "kikilatisin ko muna mula ulo hanggang paa." Madrigal has since apologized to Juday (though not in person), explaining that she was simply making patutsada against Villar. But is there any other way at reading "I have seen the folly of my ways."

Bill Clinton once said: "Politics is like show business, only with ugly people." You can't get any uglier than this display of ingratitude from someone who was a relative unknown during the 2004 elections. But bolstered by superstar power plus a jingle infuriatingly dumber and still more evil than "Dagat ng Basura" ("Ja-ja-ja-Jamby!"), Madrigal is now a member of the senate and a trash-talking presidential contender.

Politics and showbiz go together like the Malabanan family and sewage. Villar's radical shaving of Aquino's lead is credited to non-stop ad placements and use of bigshot celebrities. In the headlines a few weeks back was the thorny issue of the Comelec proposing that celebrities choose between their jobs and their candidates. Less than a week after, Comelec was singing a different tune, and even asked for the help of artistas in its voter education drive–although the Sex Bomb Dancers already beat them to it with "May Bilog na Hugis Itlog." But it was Mo Twister's disastrous interview with sexy star Ara Mina–who's running for councilor in QC– that showed yet again a shockingly unflattering side of her ilk.

The Sexbomb Dancers' video "May Bilog na Hugis Itlog"

This ought to force us to examine more closely the underlying context at hand. Electoral exercises in our corner of the planet are not scenes for ground wars–they happen more in the ozone of mass media and technology. As such, it's the nature of the medium. It's a market-driven exercise, and who are better vendors–or cockfighters and athletes–than those who appear on television, right?

"Notwithstanding their less than brilliant electoral performance, celebrity candidates are here to stay," concluded Gladstone Cuerteros of the Institute for Popular Democracy (IPD) in the article Celebrity Politicians: How They Fared. "More celebrities ran in 2007 than in 2004 and their 40+ percent winning average is nothing to trifle with. Until political parties can seriously perform their role in recruiting new blood, new politicians   from their ranks, being a celebrity will always be an avenue in entering the enticing and complex world of Philippine politics."

    @Mr. Mojo,

    Not sure if I could name five but Vilma Santos and Herbert Bautista first come to mind in my list of competent showbiz politicians. Also, I may include some of the showbiz personalities na mga konsehal sa kani-kanilang bayan o syudad. Di ko lang matandaan ang pangalan pero may isang sexy star na konsehal sa isang bayan sa Nueva Ecija and she's been known to be doing her job well. Sila yung mga showbiz types na may tunay na puso para sa kanilang immediate na kababayan.

    Hahaha... LOL

    Interchangebable nga lang sila; Politics at Showbiz.

    Diba may MMFF parade ang mga stars, may Campaign sorties din naman ang mga Politiko. Pareho lang.

    Umaakting den naman silang pareho, sa parehong manonood din.

    may mga tsismis silang pareho. covered by media of course.

    kung may talent fee ang mga artist at bonus kung kumita ang pelikula, sa politics, may pork barrel at kickback pag may projects.

    Pabong-gahan sila ng damit, kotse at bahay.

    PArehong-pareho.

    I really hope this time around we the people have learned our lesson and we choose great leaders because that is what we need right now. Kaya pa to Pilipinas!

    @chiso,

    Lalangoy sa dagat ng basura? sh*t man ,I ain't doing that. I'd rather unleash an industrial strength strain of EBOLA Virus, to trim the population down to manageable levels, say 30 million? LOL!

    Yup. The ‘masa’ are the ones who allow the trapos & Bong Revilla types to rule the land. They are both the cause and the effects of massive corruption. Vicious cycle. Bickering at incompetent politicians (see: bastards) is as effective as a mother’s sermon to a perennial drug-addict son. What’s scary is the mass’s growth rate is completely obliterating any progress we achieve. If this goes on, lahat tayo lalangoy sa dagat ng basura.

    @psychogoddess,

    Oh yeah? name at least 5 competent ones.....
  • psychogoddess Feb 28 2010 @ 01:34am Report Abuse
    great article.

    personally, I don't really care if a candidate was in showbiz as long s/he's competent. I really feel that there are some who are capable enough to be in public service.

    if the incompetent win though, we have no one to blame but ourselves. we do live in a democracy after all.

    @Chiso,

    Ito ang hindi pinapansin ng mga kababayan natin eh. Hindi sila nasisindak sa 100 million na gutom at mangmang na Pilipinos. Ito actually ang tinatawag na MOTHER OF ALL PROBLEMS natin at hindi yung mga corruption issues. Isa pa ang simbahan na sagad sa pananakot. Sa tingin ko hindi malayo ang CANNIBALISM dito sa atin, in a very short time.....

    in a few more years, the Philippines may become the last remaining third world country, that is if this country survives at all! Our problems are growing at rate where solutions are as handy as a piece toilet paper, when crap has gotten mushy inside your pants, down to your shoes. How many thousands of babies are born every hour? Most of course will grow up having no choice but to become street criminals or with some dumb luck, m&*(&^ing politicians! We can't solve the celebrity problem in our government. I say let's focus on population control first. Too weak of an economy to share amongst too many poor Filipinos like us! Who cares what the church says?! Anyone who's pro population control has my vote.

    I'd love to see more celebrities of substance enter politics. People with the vision and patriotism of the late Francis Magalona for example, could bring new and exciting things to the table, if given the chance. I hope they win too; there are far too many thieving, war-mongering, buffoons among our politicians (both celebrity and non-celebrity) for our country's good.

    Gecko: i don't think Aiko WAS a sexy actress, never was. teenage actress maybe. check IMDB or even WIKI. she had already established herself as a good actress before she joined politics.

    ...ibalik sa Senado Si Bong "Kap's Amazing Stories" Revilla para ang mga tulad ni Hayden Kho ay matakot gumawa ng Sex Video!!!!. Ibalik siya sa Senado para magkaroon uli ng "Panday" sequel na ang graphics at visual effects ay kasing galing o higit pa sa "Lord of the Rings" at "Transformers" malay natin sa susunod, 3D na ito at kasing galing na ng "Avatar".

    Go Bong Revilla!!!!!

    It's no great mystery why showbiz people wants to enter politics. It's the fastest way to WEALTH & Damnation. You don't need a college degree, nor a masters, nor a Ph.D. nor a high IQ, yet the returns are enormous, it's awesome. See the Lapids, Revillas etc.In Pinas, there are 4 ways to wealth & power; Drug Lord, Jueteng Lord, Praise the Lord, at Politics is Lord. Garantisado ito, Risk free yung Praise the Lord at Politics.

    "Nadia Montenegro just couldn’t fit into Caloocan’s congressional seat." Literally or figuratively?

    “May Bilog na Hugis Itlog” Sounds like a Pilipino translation of a Brechtian play,

    Bong Revilla: “Anong software ang ginamit mo?” Baket gagawa ka rin ng video?

    Is Dennis Roldan still alive? I though he died last year.

    Actors aspiring to be politicians are like pterodactyls trying to become swans.

    Actors should stick to their core competencies and stop meddling with politics and that goes to Ate Vi as well, in spite of what she did in Batangas.

    And as for Ogie Diaz, he could be the next Boy Abunda, not as camp (well, he's married after all) but definitely funnier. Stick to showbiz Ogie, don't go there.

    the terms artista and politico are interchangeable.

    artistas,as mentioned in this article simply just want to become politicos.

    on the other hand, politicos sing, dance, and rap just to get publicity coverage.

    Great article, as always.

    There are more celebrities running in QC, really a City of Stars. There's sexy actor Alfred Vargas, and former sexy actress Aiko Melendez.

    And he's not an artista, but Mike Defensor's run for QC mayor really makes my blood boil.
