Malacanang declared August 23 (Monday) a regular working day and August 21 (Saturday) a non-working holiday in commemoration of the death anniversary of Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, reports GMANews.tv. The report said that the proclamation in effect junked the holiday economics policy of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, which stipulated that holidays falling on weekends should be moved to Fridays or Mondays. Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said, "(Pres. Noynoy Aquino) is empowered under (Republic Act) No. 9492 to modify holidays by law, order or proclamation."

Lacierda said in a statement, according to ABS-CBNNews.com, "The purpose for observing Ninoy Aquino Day on August 21 instead of August 23 is to avoid the imposition of unnecessary financial burden upon the employers; ensure the continuity of government, business, and commercial transactions; and promote productivity, while preserving the solemnity of the observance (of the holiday)."

He previously said in a report by GMANews.tv, "As much as possible, President Aquino does not want to highlight the death anniversary or any anniversary of his parents just because of his position."

this is the first decision made by pnoy that I like. too much long weekends is not good - both for the employers and employees. what gma did is too much. sobrang dami ng holidays na maraming employers ang nalulugi and maraming employees naman ang hindi nabayaran. Pnoy should balance the holidays. The cancellation of the aug 23 holiday is balanced out by the holiday on aug 30.

Some are happy with long holidays, others say it was abused by Filipinos.

i love long weekends, i love having another day for longer sleep, i drive my kids to school so i know how it feels to wake up very early during weekdays. but most of us don't realize that majority of the laborers do not earn when long weekends are declared. they only get paid when there's work. small businesses end up spending more on labor because they have to give holiday pay if they need to work on holidays. sometimes we just have to think beyond ourselves....

The only real problem with holiday economics was that there was too much of it.

Government should be selective and declare at the beginning of the year which holidays will be subjected to holiday economics. That way, businesses and civilians can prepare.

And let's not be hyprocritical: at some point you enjoyed/appreciated the extra vacation.

i also don't agree with holiday economics dahil 1)kawawa ang mga manggagawang arawan kasi pag walang pasok, wala din silang sweldo (no work, no pay), 2)nawawala ang significance ng paggunita sa tampok na araw at napalitan ng komersyalismo, 3)disruption sa pag-aaral ng mga estudyante, 4)imbes na gastusin ang pera pag holiday, mas malaki ang benepisyo sa atin at sa bansa kung gawing savings na lang dapat perang gagastusin...

Nung may holiday economics, nagrereklamo ang mga no work no pay.

It's good that Pres. Aquino does not practice holiday economics. Holidays should be observed on the exact days.

@boo, sorry to disappoint you. in my office, i am the boss, i don't talk to clients and it's me who's giving people hell. and yes, if i want more family time, i just simply finish all my work, take a five-day leave and bring my family abroad. no need for holiday economics - it's just a matter of will.

Looking forward to a non-working holiday that falls on a Tuesday or Thursday.
  • platinumangel Aug 12 2010 @ 12:13pm Report Abuse
Yes I agree to PNOY's declaration. That holiday economics did make some of us lazy and abusive. It's how you spend your free day with your love ones that counts not the number of free days you get. In deed, when you give someone something for free, they tend to be abusive. It's about time we PINOYS make use of our time well and productively.

hmmm... "Also, I thinkbyou are not in the position to say that that is just his Consuelo de bobo"

But you're in position to tell that:
a)holiday economics makes the people lazy; b)non-observance of holiday economics makes helps "the Filipinos be back to the hardworking side" and c) GMA only knew vacation and rest?

i agree with you, Girl. if the working people wants quality time with their family, quit your job and find other source of income that will give you more time for your family!

In addition to what I've written:

If you want to have more time for your family, then quit working! You do not blame the president for not giving you holidays which he does not owe us. But of course you wouldn't want to quit your work because we need to be financially stabled to survive.

So, the solution to that is, always put in mind that in every decision we make, we have opportunity costs. We cannot have everything that we want.
  • whatsthefrequency Aug 12 2010 @ 10:19am Report Abuse
Sus. Kung gusto ng more family time, mag-take ng leave of absence. I have a family and I work in a multinational company that does not observe holidays except Christmas and New Year. And you dare complain about Aug 23 not being declared a holiday?
  • yong Aug 12 2010 @ 10:18am Report Abuse
i agree with the president, kung productivity lang ang pag-uusapan, unahin na natin ang trabaho. sa dami ng long weekends nung nagdaang mga taon, umiikli oras sa trabaho at school, magastos pa. hindi naman tayo mauubusan ng holidays, andami nyan buong taon. andaming disruptions na, bagyo, fogging, at kung anu-anupa. nakakaputol ng momentum ang long weekends. we were spoiled by gma's long weekends. it's time to get back to business.

quality family time is still possible. also, we shouldn't forget the significance of these holidays. it's the time to educate our kids about them. hindi lang yan holiday para mamasyal. holiday yan so we can celebrate, remember and learn from the past.

    In reply to sweet:

I'm sorry but I would like to oppose to your comment. Since Ex Pres GMA, declared and put into practice that holiday economics, people have been too lazy to work. (I'm not only talking about office work but also student works) We always look forward to halidays because it will give us rest and blahblahblah. I respect that, who wouldn't want to have a rest, right? But in respect with the 'date' of thereal holiday, I think it is just right that we remember the exact day and celebrate it there. Also, I thinkbyou are not in the position to say that that is just his Consuelo de bobo. WE DO NOT VOTE FOR A LEADER WHO WILL JUST GIVE US PLENTY OF HOLIDAYS OR RESTS. I commend P-Noys step. It help the Filipinos be back to the hardworking side, unlike GMA who only knew vacation and rest. This step also reminds us of the epic history we had during that day. Peace.
  • Sweet Aug 12 2010 @ 09:12am Report Abuse
I hate to say this but I voted for him, akala ko pro-family siya. One more day with our respective families is a BIG one. We dine, shop and buy local goods. I do love touring around provinces and siempre it takes money diba? We give business the ummmph! win-win situation sana ang "holiday economics" 1. it revitalizes people (Juan all work and no play makes him a dull boy) 2. Local tourist business (need not to say further) 3. Family bonding. One day,,,for one more day...is precious.
