Exploring the Fort is fun. There's a lot of stuff going on here--buildings are coming up a mile a minute--though I really, really hope they leave space for open areas and parks so it won't be congested! All this also means that cafés, shops, and restaurants are sure to pop up as well.

Take Burgos Circle, for example.

The other night I was walking and spotted this pretty interesting shop: at the bottom, it was a very handsome barber shop--and I mean it looked really inviting to get a trim and a shave; on top, it sold b-ball shoes (oh, fine--kicks, as they're called), a lot of which are special edition. Very basketball/hip hop culture, and something at home in some urban zone, say, like Brooklyn. But Taguig?!

A few steps from that is this place called L'Entrecote. I owed some dinner in exchange for a favor, so I decided to take some friends here.

L'Entrecote's Steak Frites. Click for more photos.

The original L'Entrecote is a actually a chain of restaurants in Europe. I don't know if this is part of it (I don't think it is), but what they did do is follow the concept and menu to a T. Not a very hard thing to replicate, as L'Entrecote only serves one thing: steak frites (literally--steak and fries.)

The first of these kinds of restaurants opened before my parents were even born. The owner, an affable Swiss gent, says it started in Geneva, at a place called Café de Paris. As far as I know, places that serve steak frites are scattered all over the Europe. It is also classic French bistro food-- something you can find in any corner, much like a great burger joint in the States.

We ordered the "Geneva" menu. They start you off with a decent glass of red and some bread to get the appetite going.

Then comes a simple, but well composed salad of greens, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and walnuts tossed in well-seasoned mustard vinaigrette. Refreshing and crisply fresh, its tartness is meant to open up your appetite even more. The cool thing is this is exactly the same kind of salad served in the European steak frites restaurants.

After the greens comes the main event--the steak, served on a metal plate, atop. But first, a note to everyone: we Filipinos are, undoubtedly, a carnivorous bunch. We also happen to love steak. The de rigueur cut over here is the rib eye. Fatty, luscious, and flavorful (mainly because it's fatty)--every menu in Manila that serves steak is bound to have a rib eye on it, and while we're at it, it'll probably be branded "Wagyu" or "Prime Angus" or something like that. Nothing really wrong with that, of course, as I enjoy some rib eye every now and then, but there are other decent cuts of beef that have much flavor and are basically ignored around here.

At L'Entrecote, they serve straight-up sirloin. Once upon a time, this was the most common cut you could find, and it was nice to be reacquainted with it. We ordered it medium rare. I was curious to see if the kitchen could pull it off--they were, after all, on a dry run as they've only been open a week--and cool enough, they did! The sirloin was obviously not prime beef, but it was flavorful, a bit chewy (but in a good way), and really--that was the point: you didn't need a Wagyu slab of cow to enjoy a decent steak dinner. Topped with a classic, herb filled butter sauce (some call it Café de Paris butter, named after the restaurant in Geneva), it's got solid flavor. Oh, and the fries were thin, crispy and delicious when eaten with the steak and the sauce altogether. The best part is they keep the fries coming. Yes, yes, fry lovers--you can drown yourself in potatoes over here.

Our set came with dessert. I had a real throwback of a dish--crepes suzette--which is your basic crepe with a butter and sugar sauce flambéed and flavored with orange juice and a liqueur, usually Grand Marnier. Classic French joints prepare this tableside, so you can ooh and aah at the flames and make "chancing" with your date. Over here it's served folded with some vanilla ice cream. Actually, this wasn't much to my liking (though admittedly I'm not a dessert guy), and I found it a bit too sweet. My friend had profiteroles with vanilla and chocolate sauce--a better alternative, and the traditional ending to steak frites, though the profiterole could've been a bit lighter. Our other companion had meringue with strawberry ice cream, which was a nice little ending, if a bit nondescript.

All in all, the "Geneva" set costs P1,190--if you factor in that you had a three-course meal and a glass of wine in a charming little room that could be in the center of Paris, it's not a bad deal at all. It's definitely a place to take a special date or to treat your folks. There's also a menu without the dessert for around P880--next time I visit I may just do this and find dessert or coffee elsewhere in the many cafes nearby. For the vegetarians, you can have the vegetarian menu, which is basically the salad and a cheese plate. But really--why would you bring a vegetarian to a place that specialized in steak frites, right?

L'Entrecote has a fun vibe going about it--the service is efficient, and the food is simple and solid. It's clear that the owner is trying his best to give you value for money--a bit of a rarity these days. I highly recommend it for an informal meal where you want a nice space to catch up with your friends.

I bought 25 l'entrocote vouchers, we had reservations tonight june18, i'm supposed to have 25 vouchers for dinner but prior to that we were advised by the manager that they can only accomodate 20 vouchers for 1 night. It's my birthday treat for my clan, but as they said which was not written in ur terms n conditions , we can only use 20 vouchers. This is misleading bec u said we can buy as much as we can, sadly, i have to cancel my invitation for my brother n his family :( , they were left behind.rnrnWe used only 19 vouchers , and L'entrecote gave us a seat at the corner, yes, one table for ten and another for nine pax. With inconvenience, they seated us with 2 long benches for the ten persons which made us uncomfortable bec when one person needs to go out, all the people at one side has to stand up to give way. Very poor seating arrangement, they should have given us only one long bench for that table and give the other long bench to another guests (of course not my party).rnrnAfter the long wait of our main meal , on which my daughter's steak was served w/ a piece of hair strand (of course we had it replaced), here came the dessert, one table were given walnut n raspberry vacherin cake, and one table was not served with the walnut, we were only given a dessert with only the raspberry mouse, meaning wala yun cake part. We complained and the kitchen staff came up to explain that they ran out of the walnut part. (pls look at the dessert pic , walnut is the white part ). Though the kitchen staff were apologetic , im beginning to get pissed off, bec i said "u should have informed us, it's like shortchanging us, beside we had reservations so u should presume that u have ample supply for the desserts. Haaaaay!rnrnNow i still have 6 more vouchers to consume , and when i get back there with a balikbayan, i wonder if they would still short change us. I think u should call their attention regarding this services. I believe in their minds we can be settled with short-changed desserts bec we only paid the vouchers with a discounted price. This is unfair to us who paid it in advanced. rn

Looked promising when I sat down and ordered a steak, medium rare. Wonder what the cook did with the juice. Tasted like they washed the meat; nice slice of lean, but dull and tasteless tender meat. The sauce was good, doesn't get the juice back into the meat.rn

We dined at l'entrecote recently to celebrate my partner's birthday based on a recommendation from a friend and another blog writer. We really enjoyed the food, wine, ambience, location and service especially meeting Chef Martin and his charming wife Mitzi. rnrnChef Martin's food expertise and his extensive experience here and overseas paid off with this world-class restaurant.rnrnWe ordered the "Geneva" option and our medium steaks were perfect along with the amazing secret sauce. The friendly wait staff kindly obliged our request for more of this secret sauce and their yummy bread.rnrnWe had a memorable evening with the gastronomic delight at reasonable prices- cooked and served with pride and passion by the very welcoming hosts and their staff.rnrnOh the glorious desserts were also to die for- we were fighting over the last bite

Went to this restaurant last night without knowing the cafe de paris background. I was surprised to find out after reading on the net that it's based on a famous chain in france.rnrnThe restaurant's ambiance was very comfortable and soothing with the colourful paintings and soft french music. Quality of tables and chairs were just average though.rnrnThe salad was indeed refreshing and served it's purpose as an appetizer. rnrnI asked my steak to be done medium rare and I think the steak I got was closer to a medium. I usually like a more pinkish colour to my steak. Serving size was decent at 200 gms. rnrn Let me first say I'm not a steak sauce guy. My perfect steak would be flame grilled to medium rare and seasoned with just salt and pepper to bring out the natural flavour and juiciness of the beef.rnrnWith that out of the way I thought the sauce was good but not great. It was certainly flavourful but nothing to write home about.rnrnI thought the fries were bland and stale. Very similar to half day's old mcdonald's french fries. At the time I found the steak fries pairing to be odd. I know they did this for the sake of tradition but I'd very much prefer mashed potatoes.rnrnService was great. Servers were attentive and polite. Only complaint was our cheese platter took around 15 minutes to prepare. Note that we were the only customers at the time and we informed them of our dessert choice at the start. How long does it take to slice 3 kinds of cheese?rnrnWould I go back? Probably yes, but not any time soon considering they only have one menu item. I hope they can give people a choice other than french fries next time.rnrn

Hi JJ. I tried L'Entrecote after reading your blog. Cafe de Paris is one of my favorite restos and since I haven't been back to Geneve in a while, I decide to have some blast from the past. I am glad I did. I liked their food, service, pricing, and ambience. I will soon bring my husband (as soon as he comes home) who used to hang out in Cafe de Paris twice a week when he was working in Geneve.
