Top 10 Siopao in Manila

Frances Lorraine Haw-Ang  | Published: Aug 25, 2010 - 9:00am

The word siopao was actually a localized term coined after the Chinese dimsum called "bao-zi." It may be translated as "hot buns" in the Chinese dialect Hokkien. This popular snack is best enjoyed hot, right after it's taken out of the steamer.

Pinoys love asado siopao, as well as those which use quality meat with a little fat and delicious fillers. While most stores in Binondo may dominate the list, we've found the top spots for siopao places outside Chinatown:

10. Suzhou Dumplings
Address: Ground floor Food Court, Promenade, Greenhills Shopping Center, San Juan
Tel. No. 744-3546 (Promenade)
Operating Hours: 10 a.m.- 11 p.m.
Price: P25 (Regular Asado Siopao)

Suzhou Dumplings is known for its Xiao Long Pao, their Asado Siopao makes for a wonderful afternoon treat. The pork asado chunks are bigger than usual and the bread has a nice chewy texture. The filling is amde of pure pork with very little fat, making it a good choice for the health-conscious. They also have mini asado paos that the kids and kid-at-heart would love.

9. Emerald Garden
Address: 1170 Roxas Boulevard, Manila
Tel. No. 523-8510 to 14
Operating Hours: 7 a.m.- 2 p.m., 6p.m.- 10 p.m.
Price: P99 (Tai Pao)

This is one siopao that's worth the travel and the wait. Emerald Garden staff will tell you to order your Tai Pao in advance as it can go really fast. One order of the huge and heavy Tai Pao is generously filled with asado, chicken, meatball, chorizo, and salted egg. It comes with a very tasty sauce that makes you feel like you're enjoying a main dish instead of a steamed dimsum. Their bun is also very fluffy and soft.

My favorite spot to have siopao is at Tin Hao Dimsum, I am usually particular with the dough and only at Tin Hao Dimsum do they make it the best! Their meat filling is equally delicious din!

You should try CIFU Asian Cooking at Pedro Gil and Banawe. The meat is full and the dough fantastic! They even have mini siopaos called siopitas for gifting.

I like Ma Mon Luk's Siopao Asado much better than Ling Nam. Never tried Ling Nam's Siopao Bola-bola, i must try this one! But for a real taste of complete siopao experience! I highly recommend Kowloon's Jumbo Pao. The best! Super sulit! :)

I love Kowloon jumbo pao, sulit na sulit......7-11 pwede na din kaso antipid sa sauce...chowking is a so-so, probably because its availability kaya na-consider but it is really a blah. A really good siopaw should taste good from bun right thru the filling sealed with asado sauce.

I would have expected Jade to be in this list. I love how soft the buns are. It's even better than Masuki/Ma Mon Luk in my opinion. I'm surprised that Chowking Siopao is here. Don't really like the texture of the buns.

I have been living in the US for almost 23 years. Back in the Philippines, Ma Mon Luk was my favorite Siopao and Mami place when I was little. I have been trying to get that Ma Mon Luk Asado flavor which is the same taste as in the sauce. I am not referring to soy sauce, brown sugar or oyster sauce flavor, it is something else. I read some recipes that call for star anise. I created my own recipe and kept on changing it. Hopefully one day, I will get that flavor that is missing.

i think others should read the article thoroughly before commenting. the author obviously mentioned that masuki is from the same familiy as ma mon luk and a lot would still look for ma mon luk on the list. it's funny rnrnwhile i dont agree that chowking should be in the list and emerald should rank as #1 i respect the judgement of spot and agree with kainoa, this is depending on the taste of spot.ph and their goal is to give readers more option on where they can enjoy siopao. peace

this is really a joke for chowking and northpark to be there. in case you dont know your siopao abc's, take a look at the 2 siopaos. they are made with encrusting machines like rheon, hence the need for reformulation of dough to the proper consistency which sacrifices the dough softness and texture. there are also many kinds of siopao, the cantonese style which is more compact or more known as 'sticky dough type' and the shanghai style, which is more smooth. half of the best siopao brands are in binondo, not the commercial or branded ones. most are from hole in the wall restos and chinese bakeries. this looks more like an paid advertisement to me than an unbiased review.
  • HampasLupa Aug 27 2010 @ 10:38pm Report Abuse

  • joe Aug 26 2010 @ 12:14pm Report Abuse
@ Aaron, tbh, I'd be disappointed if Gourmet Pao was included. It suffers from an identity crisis, like 7-11's pizza pao. If I want sandwich, I'll order a sandwich, not bacon, cheese, egg, and other sandwich fillings encased in a siopao dough. It's also pricey, P50 for a small bao.
Agree on this list but also agree that Mamon Luk should be there. Best dough goes to Kowloon House, b/c it has a puto texture, but it's too filling.
Chowking, like Hen-Lin, is inconsistent, minsan ok, minsan soggy. Emerald Garden's pao are given as gifts or pasalubong. It's a meal in itself.

Ma Mon Luk is the best mami and siopao there is. I remember my Dad taking us there almost every week (Sundays) for a snack. The big bowl of mami paired with their biggest (asado or bola-bola) siopao were an absolute delight! Francis, I suggest that you should re-do this list because I can bet my bottom dollar that you didn't do an extensive research on these topic.

i also expected the fried siopao to be on the top of the list, but hey, not even on the honorable mentions :D
  • tinkikay Aug 25 2010 @ 09:16pm Report Abuse
agree, ma mon luk and henlin should be there, not a fan of chowking. will definitely try dragon noodle center. bakit walang fried siopao? the one near 168 mall is really good!
  • Yan Perez Aug 25 2010 @ 09:14pm Report Abuse
i agree with chowking! i have tried almost all siopaos on the list and chowking deserves its place
  • irvin john Aug 25 2010 @ 09:10pm Report Abuse
disagree with Chowking. mas masarap pa ang seven eleven at ministop. where's ma mon luk?
  • joeydragonlady Aug 25 2010 @ 07:12pm Report Abuse
what happened to hen lin and mamon luk?
  • Brent Aug 25 2010 @ 06:13pm Report Abuse
Where's Hen Lin??? Iba talaga ang Sarap. :)
  • aaron Aug 25 2010 @ 06:09pm Report Abuse
why is it Gourmet pao is not in the list?
  • Daquiri Aug 25 2010 @ 06:02pm Report Abuse
...MA MON LUK siopao should be number one on the list!
  • Leonora Aug 25 2010 @ 04:41pm Report Abuse
ma mon luk - hindi na siya masarap. :(
  • earl Aug 25 2010 @ 04:15pm Report Abuse
i expected mamon luk's siopao as #1. Its not even on the list!
  • Edgar Aug 25 2010 @ 04:00pm Report Abuse
I second Karlo's comment. Ma Mon Luk certainly has both a historical and culinary history with regards to its siopao. Can't understand why it isn't here.
  • Karlo Aug 25 2010 @ 03:45pm Report Abuse
Mamon Luk's special siopao should at least be in your top 3. one of the best.
  • nunsee Aug 25 2010 @ 03:44pm Report Abuse
agree on the list! :) siopao is one of my all time favorites comfort food! :)
