When traveling around Asia, foodies hankering for good Chinese food always include a trip to one of Crystal Jade's restaurants on the itinerary. With outlets in Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City, Seoul, Jakarta and Tokyo, the Crystal Jade franchise finally opens its flagship outlet in Manila.

Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao, located in Virra Mall, Greenhills, is Crystal Jade's first branch in Manila. With an award-winning reputation to uphold--its Hong Kong outlets are listed in the Michelin Guide Hong Kong/Macau 2010 Bib Gourmand--seven master chefs are in charge of the spacious Manila kitchen to ensure that they churn out authentic   flavors.

Even with numerous citations, including being on the list of the Miele Guide's Top 320 Best Restaurants in Asia in 2008 for the Shanghai branch, the local menu surprisingly has most dishes priced below the 400-peso mark.

Go for the Xiao Long Bao ("small basket dumpling"), a steamed pork dumpling filled with soup which originated in Eastern China. Crystal Jade's version has tender pork meat and a tasty burst of steaming soupy broth, wrapped delicately in soft smooth wonton wrapper served with ginger sauce as a dipping sauce (P158 for 5 pieces). Note to the uninitiated: wait a few seconds before popping the whole dimsum into your mouth. The explosion of the hot broth oozing from inside the dumpling may result to a burnt tongue. Better yet, place the dumpling on your spoon, nibble a hole and slurp the soup.

The La Mian, or Chinese hand-pulled noodles are also made daily, with ingredients flown in from Hong Kong.   The 132-seater restaurant dressed in traditional red with cream hues, also serves other equally enjoyable dishes:   a flaky radish pastry (P98/ 3 pieces), savory Beijing pork dumplings (P115/ 8 pieces), Crispy Chicken Fillet in Lemon Sauce (P288) and Noodle with Dried Shrimp & Peanut in Spicy Sauce (P288).

We recommend calling ahead to make reservations, the buzz on Crystal Jade is sure to create long lines waiting for a table. Crystal Jade Xiao Long Bao opens at 11 a.m. on September 13, Monday.

Dine at Crystal Jade Vira Mall last night, long waiting lines receptionist at the front door do not based on reservation #, we waited for almost an hour, ala carte menu are small portion only we order yang chow fried rice (it's good for 2 only), lemon chicken (good for 1 only), 3 siao lung pao. Singapore Crystal Jade portion is bigger than here. For value of taste and money I would recommend Gloria Maris which is 1 block away or go to choi garden.

rnWe passed by at Crystal Jade last friday, Sept. 17, My companion also confronted with the receptionist at the front door as they refused to let us in even the table for 4 person is available I was told that since we were only two of us we should wait for the table for two. Upon hearing that we immediately left. They do not follow the number. rnrn

We went there last night, food is good but they have the worst service from the reservation at the receptionist to the waiter. rnrn1. Receptionist - if you reserved for 2 seats chances are you have to wait longer than reserving 4 to 5 pax. (as seats for 2 pax are limited compare to 4 pax ) my suggestion reserved 4 to 6 pax, you will surely get ur seats in a few minutes.rnrnrn2. Waiter - poorly trained, we verbally order from the menu guess what after 10 mins of waiting we were told that he fogot to punch at the computer after 15 minutes the food arrived but it's not what we order again the waiter and the manager apologized to us that since they just open the restaurant we should bear with them. (c'mon we paid the bill it's not free)rnrn3. We requested from the waiters (i mean waiters) for condiments & tissue it never arrived. rnrn.........Worst service, will never go back to that restaurant.rn

We ate there yesterday. rnto me it tasted like Lee Kum Kee with a cook who knows what he's doing. rnthe food is good to a point and then it lets you down quickly as the food dosen't last very long. (small servings at full serving prices)rnrnwhat we had was rnthe Xiao Long Bao- the soup inside just wasn't there, plus the black vinegar that came as a dipping sauce just masked the non existent soup insidernrnthe fried rice with chinese sausage= pretty good. i would say at par with maan hann less oil but half the servings, rnrnbrocoli with garlic = vegetable was pretty fresh, a very simple dish. rnrnhot and sour soup = this thing came in a small cup. for 160 a serving i was expecting a bit more. good, lots of ingredients (tho its in a small cup, so technicaly its not alot) nothing to rave about. super bowl has bigger servings at less price. rnrnthen a chicken dish with almonds, and came with a "pancake" wrapper, this one was good. but we didn't order it, what we ordered was the fried spicy chicken. that never came, this one came instead after we have already finished eating. it was the same price as the one we ordered so we just ate it and left. rnrnoh, and btw dont order the winterlemon drink. its just calamansi (lemon maybe but it tasted like calamansi to me) juice with honey and more syrup. in other words it tasted light but very sweet. for 110 a pop... i feel jipped...rnrni say try it once, and order the "La Mein" dishes as those seem to be worth the money as they came in a big bowl. rnrnor come in groups of 2 as the servings are good for 2 at best, and one if your hungry. rnrnor better yet go to gloria maris ( the main resto) and have a good meal there. it may cost twice but the servings are 3 times more and taste better. rnthornmann hann is still the best for me....
