The lowdown on alleged Puey Quiñones "fashion scam;" Quiñones apologizes in his statement

Published: Feb 17, 2011 - 11:19am

UPDATED (February 17, 1 p.m.): Fashion designer Puey Quinones released a statement today on StyleBible.ph regarding the suit scandal (see below) that went viral this week. "I was simply pressured to create a suit and found a perfect blank canvas to develop. I know the entire situation could have been handled better but now it has just been blown out of proportion and affected so many others."

Quinones apologized to the couple whom he sold the suit to and "to everyone else that have raised concerns over the quality of (his) service as a designer." He said he is "in contact with the party involved and (intends) to settle this peacefully." He added, "I am doing all that I can to make sure that this does not happen again."

PUBLISHED (February 17, 11:19 a.m.): An alleged "fashion scam" has been the talk of social networking sites since TV host Kat de Castro Tweeted a photo of a double-labeled suit on February 14. The beige suit in the photo carried the labels Bobon by Puey Quinones and the off-the-rack brand Dansen.

De Castro Tweeted, "The designer asked 30k for this suit. Pero bakit may Dansen tag? Sa SM ito di ba? Napeke kaya yung friend ko? (But why is there a Dansen tag? Isn't that from SM? Was my friend duped?)" She added, "The designer should really explain why was there a Dansen tag in his so-called original suit."

According to de Castro, a friend of hers had the suit made for a wedding to be held in less than two weeks. She later Tweeted, "Designer update: He asked my friend to give back the Dansen suit but also give him time to create a new one. Wow."

Shortly after the photo made the rounds on Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites, Bobon released a short statement saying the "fashion scam" is "not a registered and official Bobon transaction."

A few hours later, Bobon released another statement that read: "We wish to clarify that BOBON is not in any way involved in the design, production or sale of the suit in the photo, or the affixing of the 'BOBON by Puey Quinones' label to the suit."

Bobon said they used the label "Bobon by Puey Quinones" in 2008 but they discontinued it more than a year ago. All Bobon pieces have been labeled "BOBON" since 2010, they said.

"We have used every effort to reclaim and destroy these old labels (Bobon by Puey Quinones). We are certain that this suit was not purchased by the owner from or through BOBON. All BOBON pieces are sold exclusively at or through the BOBON store at The Podium and we have no record of this transaction," the statement reads.

Bobon also said they "started as a collaboration with a single designer in 2008" but it has since "grown into a collective effort involving several Filipino designers." They maintained that "BOBON is not affiliated with any one designer."

Today, de Castro Tweeted, "My friend went straight to the designer, not Bobon." She said Quinones promised her friend "a refund, pero (but) two gives. Needless to say, my friend went to another designer for help."

The TV host also Tweeted, "I never thought many people would react to it (the photo). All I wanted was to help a friend out. Sana hindi na mangyari ulit (I hope this doesn't happen again)."

WHY is it that one of thousands of rip-offs by Puey Quinones against people who can afford it gets all the publicity? I'm 60 years old and put up the money for THREE businesses for Puey. He even STOLE the rent money and didn't even pay the staff. He stole ALL my life savings. He ran up HUGE bills in my name also. I have colon cancer now and cannot afford the medical treatment. WHY does everyone, including other respectable designers such as Dennis Lustico allow him to wreck the Philippines designers' reputations? You can sure in Philippines, but I lost EVERYTHING, thanks to him, his pulis colonel father and headmistress mother who threatened me. Contact me on gregipoh@hotmail.com for true details.

I guess that's what you call KARMA. The truth always comes out in the end!rnHope that you learn from this Puey, you can't keep screwing people and expect to get away it!!rnGood luck with your career!

phooey, este, puey.. hindi ka yayaman nang tunay sa quick buck.. take a look at and get inspiration from the gays that are doing very well. what do they have in common? hard work, dedication, honesty, perhaps thriftiness and prudence in spending while they were still trying to make it.. hindi pwedeng wala ka pa "doon" e doon ka na gumagastos, you know..

i think something similar happened to kris aquino. i vaguely recall reading something about a dress or a gown which was supposed to have been made by one famous designer, but kris (or a friend of kris') saw the exact same thing in one of the pricier department stores, meaning it was not created esp.for her but just bought off the rack and then passed of as an original.rnif a famous designer could do it to a famous celebrity, what can prevent a lesser-known designer to do the same thing to a relatively-unknown customer? or is it common practice? a simple case of trying to make quick buck?
  • vgave Feb 19 2011 @ 10:54pm Report Abuse
That's the problem with the fashion industry. There are so many "designers" who don't even know how to measure a person's body or know how to use a sewing machine. Even if he doesn't have enough sewers, he could bring the customer's measurements to so many highly skilled tailors operating in small stalls who could make the suit for him. Moral of the story, there isn't really so much difference in a 30K suit and a 1k suit here in the Philippines. For that designer, start learning your craft. Or just move to another kind of work...rn

OMG!Its a very shameful act. To all Designers who are doing this cowardice and cheat, my araw din kayo just like puequi(pronounce:peke). So please stop this blunder just to attain your superficial needs (drugs, toyboys, expensive bags na di bagay sa damit at fez nyo). Kakarmahin din kyo in the long run. Better enhance your craftmanship & skills. Re-tagging does not make you more richer or wiser, you just fool urself and ur name that u have been taken care of all these years.

On the day of my wedding, as i was about to put on my gown, it was to my horror that i found out, instead of the label of my designer, i saw the label of--- HORROR OF ALL DESIGNER HORRORS, BOYING EUSTAQUIO!!!!!! Puey should have gotten a suit at Bergamo (since it's known for it's sartorial quality) then re-label it. Though it's a bit expensive, but sana 10k na tubo was good enough for him.rnrnEpic, I just wonder what school you were educated in or what barn or manger you were born? Saang looban ka kaya sa Pasay or Leveriza??rnrnMinamaliit mo mga tga probinsya bakla, kung alam mo lng saan galing si Cary Santiago at mga bongga na designers sa Dubai! Hindi sila galing sa mayaman at sosyal na angkan but they have talent and they social climbed their way too to be accepted in the industry!!rnrnIt just so happened, nabuko si Puey sa carelessness nya. I agree a lot of other designers do this too. Caveat Emptor!rnrnThis is an eye-opener to all in the fashion industry!! Designers and buyers at that!!

@ epic:rnrnclass and taste can be learned. it transcends social strata. it is not exclusive to the rich and the nouveau riche at the very least.we are not condemned to be poor forever. we have the choice to turn our lives around.rnrncase in point: if a poor lad/lass learns the ropes of the fashion world and earns his niche in the fashion industry, is in not right to support him just because he's poor? when did we have a caste system here in the Philippines?rnrnyes, puey may have been very lucky. some people may call him a flake, talentless and devoid of integrity because of this debacle. but it is unfair to poison the well and drag his hometown and the university he studied in because of this fiasco.rnrn

That's the most st*p*d thing to do to one's own name and brand. This is not about where puey came from or what his background was, a talent is a talent in as much as a "name" is a "name". The bottom line is, not only was he guilty of copyright infringement by re-tagging but pricing it 10x smacks of willful deceit and arrogance just because the client was a "nobody" for him. Puey is now a goner and no amount of PR blitz will save his business reputation. Too bad and too st*p*d.

rnrnIt would have been fine if he had only ruined his name, but it's sad that many people are now saying "they are sure" that other designers do that as well.rnrnUnfair to real Filipino talents who put hard work to every piece.rnrnPuey is a talentless excuse for a tailor; he has been wearing that draped blanket for MANY years now! If he can't come up with fresh and ORIGINAL designs, I don't expect him to be able to execute a simple suit.rnrnAnd if you look at his past creations, all of them will have striking resemblance to the works foreign designers.rnrnI know we all deserve second chances, but I don't believe his chance should be used in the fashion industry again. To his supporters, especially the celebrities, please have a heart not for the scammer but for the paying clients. If you still believe in him, then go and let him re-tag some dresses for you and continue to pay ridiculous amount of money for something he didn't work for. But please do not convince the public that what he did was alright. Lying and stealing are never alright. It's a BEHAVIOR, not an accident.rnrn

@epic, no doubt PQ is wrong at all angles and indeed, in the fashion industry or prior to any profession for that matter, you should have aquired your credentials because it defines you when you are unknown. rnrnBut I don't agree sa sinabi mo about trusting "probinsyano na galing sa mahirap". I think that's the wrong way to title and judge somebody. You generalized, as if lahat ng probinsyano o mahirap walang talent. The sucking up and pasosyalan is what makes up fashion. That's how you network in the fashion industry.rnrnPG ruined his career, pero hindi sya makikilala in the beginning if he had no show for it. For fashion designers, or any suppliers for that matter. If you can't meet the deadline of delivery, be honest and tell it to your customers. You can either ask for delivery extension or give refund. Or better yet, if you think the deadline is too tight, then don't commit in the first place.

to the former clients of puey quinones... better check if you really have a puey or a pweh.
  • toodles Feb 17 2011 @ 03:05pm Report Abuse
i absolutely have no sympathy for puey quinones. who knows how long he's been doing this? i sympathize with his previous clients who are now doubtful of what they own, a puey or pweh?!

Three days before my Bora wedding, I had to ask a friend to make a simple gown for me as Puey couldn't finish mine. According to his sisters they only have 1 mananahi!!

this story is so BIG....rnrnif this had happened in 1st world fashion capitals of the world, this would have spelled the demise/ fall of any fashion empire.rnrnthese local designers are so full of themselves, charging 30,000 for a suit that honestly looks like crap. Delusional.

F*gly! I doubt if he can get away with it. Evidence so glaring, it speaks for itself.
  • iamjery Feb 17 2011 @ 01:44pm Report Abuse
moral of the story, before u even get a piece from any designer, check out SM or landmark 1st for good finds. bottomline, its how u carry urself that matters and not the amount of the piece ur wearing.
  • sm clothes? Feb 17 2011 @ 01:36pm Report Abuse
This will be a blow to the designer's career.
  • blair Feb 17 2011 @ 01:34pm Report Abuse

  • scam has a name n its puey Feb 17 2011 @ 01:32pm Report Abuse
