The Blonde Blogger Syndrome: 10 Scene-Stealers in the Blogosphere

Anna Canlas | Published: Sep 4, 2011 - 10:51am

Before we begin, a treatise. To be precise, a once-around about the much-headlined Blogger. No longer just referring to your run-of-the-mill registrant (e.g. to blogspot, wordpress, et cetera), in certain circles (i.e. fashion), the term “blogger” has now come to signify a specific type of diarist (sartorial)—and, in conjunction, a similarly singular style (kabogera).

For all these omissions, air-quotations, and faulty definitions-within-definitions (a sure sign of the apocalypse), the blogger is extremely easy to identify. To translate an earlier term, they’re what you’d call “outshiners”. Credit-chasers. Scene-stealers with online accounts. Sites like lookbook.nu have even sprouted just for this phenomenon of the full body shot, with nifty tagging options to brand the items on the wearer. Shirt, Forever 21. Pants, designer bid on Ebay. Bag, thrifted.

These days you don’t even really need a blog to be called a blogger. An existential crisis, if you have to think long and hard about it, right up there with the ongoing debate about a much more acute, yet undeniably linked series of occurrences: The Rise Of The Blonde Blogger.

We’re not quite sure how it started, but we do know for a fact that the blonde Asian look (an oxymoron, up until now) had its strongest, platinum roots in 90s Japan. In Harajuku—a fashion district in the capital of Tokyo, where teenagers congregate to dress up in any number of genre-culled getups (i.e. goth, Lolita, gothic Lolita…), the ganguro style was developed to mimic the average American teenager. Translated as ‘black-faced’, the look was characterized by California-girl staples like tanning salon skin, rows of fake lashes, press-on nails, and bleached blonde hair. A supposed rebellion against the traditional ideals of Japanese beauty—pale skin, dark hair, zero semblance of Tara Reid—the ganguro style actually had its peak in 2000, but, like other fads, just slowly faded away, in the spirit of that sun-touched dye job… Sigh.

The fascination with Western ideals, however, still carries on, making its way into our own shores with today’s onslaught of peroxide, strawberry, or ash blonde bloggers (clearly, we're using the B word loosely here). And while the hair option was once the domain of another, well-loved Nippongo institution (read: Japayuki), these days the trend transcends classes and personas.

Not all of the blonde bloggers ID’d here are platinum, nor cutesy, which makes this a great guide to knowing your new saints.

This list is not valid without funnysexy.ph rnrnHow the f*ck did they miss her??? HELLO NOMINATED FOR BEST PERSONAL BLOG SA PHILIPPINE BLOG AWARDS THE PAST 4 YEARS. Plus palagi talaga siya nagu-update, unlike Daryl Chang who barely writes I can't even consider a blogger.

I think these have a short shelf life. I don't see them doing this for long. Who wants to see a wrinkly Alodia (or a surgically altered Alodia) some 20 years from now? Not me. I wonder if the prospect of a future with saggy skin keeps them paranoid and awake at night, or is it the thought of always a more talented ingenue a few birthdays away from stealing the fickle public's attention?rnrnPoint: Enjoy it while it lasts, ladies.

Hmm, ganun pala yon? pag poor and blonde ka, "japayuki" ang tawag, pero kung sosyal at mapera "fashion trends". Hay naku, ang galing mag-spin ng writer na to.

Some people say/write about things they don't know anything about, Daryl Chang has been blonde for a long time and so with Divine Lee. Search for their photos since before 2010 and you'll see they've always been blond (multiple shades of blonde too)rnAll 10 blond bloggers are very good examples of how the new Filipina should be, educated, cultured and articulate.rn

While admittedly there are some questionable (fashion) "blogs" out there, when it comes to fashion blogging, most of these women are at the top... regardless of the fact that they have other jobs, or just blog part-time. rnrnDon't be too quick to hate, just because they're blonde, doesn't mean they're not proud to be Filipinas or whatever. I'd like to think being Filipino goes way way WAY beyond the color of dead skin cells. rnrnTwo pisos. :D

@greta, please read the intro before you make comments. the whole point is there. obviously.

umm... can someone explain to me what the point of this story is? that they color their hair and that they have a blog?
  • mia 9 months ago Report Abuse
I think Kryz uy is the only one on this list who didnt dye/change her hair color. And its not even blonde. Ang layo lang.

Patulan ba ang hater? don't stoop down to their level.

I agree with Garovs' comment, she with her beautiful blue hair! :) rnrnTo "attack of the phonies," I hope you could get your facts straight first :) Do you happen to be basing your judgmental comments on the knowledge of any of us personally?rnrnI can only speak for the ones I know truly well--of this bunch, I've known Tricia and Seph way before "fashion blogging" became a term. All three of us have been "living real lives" and "working real jobs" even as college students: Tricia as a photojournalist and fashion photographer, Seph in an automobile and an insurance company while modeling, and myself as a writer/reporter for magazines/newspapers/TV shows. When we all graduated, we have pretty much held day jobs similar to these.rnrnAs for our hair colors, I believe we're all entitled to making the style choices we want to see on ourselves :) For the record my hair color is (and has been for the longest time) Red--it just appears Blonde in certain photos, but whatever, right? :) Blonde, redhead or brunette, you can choose to work what you already have or change it up to suit your style personality. Have a good day!

    eh bakit mo binasa? LOL
  • attack of the phonies 9 months ago Report Abuse
on any given day, I'll take a blogger who is proud of her dark roots, living a real life and working a real job over these phony prisses who have nothing better to do than simper at the camera rnrn

There should be another list for bloggers with interesting hairstyles/color --- Garovs (

Tricia has always been my fave blonde blogger. She's been blonde before most of the peeps in the list were blonde & she pulls it off beautifully. Yung iba halos lately lang nag-lighten yung hair.

I'm a follower of most of the blogs listed... isn't the last girl named Shai? I think they forgot the H.
  • lola sy 9 months ago Report Abuse
Great and unique feature, plus describes the bloggers very well I believe. Btw, I think from to their "Meet Seph and Shai" page Kuya Seph is from Mapua and Ate Shai is from Ateneo, I think she and Ms Tricia are college friends, not from state uni :]
