Top 25 Proud-to-be-Pinoy Moments in 2011

Published: Dec 31, 2011 - 8:05am

2011 may have been riddled with frustrating political controversies and mind-boggling face-palm moments, but there were still some things that made us feel flush with pride rather than embarrassment. SPOT.ph celebrates this year's triumphs in the arts, filmmaking, sports, and more:

25. Pastry chefs win in Hong Kong's International Culinary Classic.

Our culinary prowess shone this year: the Pastry Alliance of the Philippines received five golds, two bronzes and a team silver at Hong Kong's International Culinary Classic held in May 2011. The team competed against delegates from 12 countries.

24. Local films Halaw and Busong are recognized in international film festivals.

2011 was a good year for our talented filmmakers: Sheron Dayoc's Halaw (Ways of the Sea) won the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) Special Mention Award at the Berlin Film Festival in February and Auraeus Solito's Busong premiered to a standing ovation at the Directors' Fortnight in the prestigious Cannes International Film Festival in May.

23. Nine-year-old Pinoy leads young artists in Shanghai exhibit

Age is merely a number for nine-year-old Hamzah Marbella, who led other talented young artists in a Shanghai exhibit in April 2011. The exhibit featured 42 pieces by Marbella and 400 works of Chinese children.

22. Pinoy designer Alexis Monsanto's collection featured in first 3D fashion show in US

Pinoy designer Alexis Monsanto's collection debuted at the first 3D fashion show in Hollywood, California. The September fashion show was attended by blogger Perez Hilton, as well as stars from the new TV show, "Revenge," which will use some of Monsanto's creations on the show.

21. Pinoy athlete Antonio Lining is now No. 1 pool player in the world.

Antonio Lining was declared the No. 1 pool player in the world in April 2011. Although Lining was booted out of the World Ten Ball Championship in May 2011, other local bets advanced during the Ten Ball matches.

I think the reason why they used "Proud to be Pinoy" is because all these people competed with other countries or represented the Philippines in one way or another. Is it a crime to relate and say, "I feel good because my fellow Filipino is being recognized"? I believe it should empower us. It doesn't mean we're basking in reflected glory.

Proud to be Pinoy moments? As if... the only ones who can be proud are the ones who directly contributed to these 'achievements'. Sponsors, families, friends.. they can be proud, but the rest of the population, hahaha.. get real. Work harder for your own achievements and stop attaching yourself to others like parasites.. the only thing you have in common with them is that your parents are pinoy (sometimes not even that)..

theres nothing to be proud of, why?? is it your achievement? did you help to make them reach that achievement? no... dont be part of something that has nothing to do with you... change the title into "Greates pinoy achievement" not "Proud-to-be-pinoy" we can still be proud without claiming others glory...

one giant facepalm to the editor

Lest we forget, Amando Tetangco, a holdover from the former PGMA's regime, is the one responsible for this country's ratings upgrade and central bank's vast foreign reserves. Good job Mr Tetangco! Hope the haciendero won't ax you.

Ms. Universe po yung kay Shamcey. Ms. World yung kay Gwendolyn. Kala ko ba clever? Ano ba yan.

Mas mataas naman ang naabot na place nung Gwendolyn Ruais kesa kay Shamcey. She deserved a place here rather than Ms. Supsup. More publicized lang ung kay Ms. U..

    11. Ang Babae sa Septic Tank makes it to the Oscars.

Oscar nominations are not yet announced. The film was just shortlisted. It will compete against 60 other films from different countries and the Academy will only nominates at most 5 of it. And based on early predictions, sadly, "Septic Tank" doesn't even have a chance of being actually nominated.

And the one that compiled this list is probably one of their fashion editors...

Seriously, not to belittle other accomplishments but you should have included the credit ratings upgrade of the Philippines and our country being deemed the "dark horse of Asia" in terms of investments, as well and having a record amount of foreign reserves.

    Here's an excerpt from http://www.cnbc.com/id/45333518/Invest_in_Philippines_the_Dark_Horse_of_Asia_Expert

"The country is expected to end the year 2011 with a record $76 billion in foreign reserves. Now, the country’s credit rating is at BB , just one notch more and we are in “investment grade” and on par with that of Indonesia."

I wish you have included Lav Diaz's "Siglo ng Pagluluwal" in the international screening mention. It was by the way screened at the Toronto International Filmfest, Venice International FIlm fest, Berlin and this January at the Rotterdam. Bakit ba Cannes lang ang alam niyo? C'mon guys, research!
