Last Saturday, March 20, 2010, anti-RH Bill groups launched a protest march, “Walk for Life,” in Manila, according to GMANews.TV.

The Knights of Columbus, along with other Catholic organizations, reiterated their stance against artificial means of contraception and their belief that the government should not get involved in what should be a private matter for couples. They criticized the aggressive promotion of contraceptives such as condoms by the Department of Health (DOH).

In a GMANews.TV report, KC Luzon deputy and “Walk for Life” organizer Alonzo Tan, stated, “We challenge the government to redefine its attitude to contraceptives.”

The Church and other religious organizations believe that the use of condoms won’t solve the country’s worsening HIV/AIDS problem since it would just encourage people to have unprotected sex.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines and Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, a Catholic, expressed their support for the groups that participated in the protest march, which kicked off at 6 a.m. with a mass at the San Agustin Church. Participants then walked from Intramuros to Rajah Sulayman Park in Malate, Manila.

“Walk for Life” came in the wake of the DOH’s disclosure that it had set aside P6 million to buy condoms for the campaign against HIV/AIDS.

Despite the wave of condom-bashing controversy, the DOH has stepped up its anti-HIV/AIDS moves. “The time for debate is over and the time for action is now,” said Secretary Esperanza Cabral.

The latest statistics from the DOH’s Philippine National AIDS Secretariat show a marked increase in HIV/AIDS cases in the country—from 65 in January 2009 to 143 in January 2010.

Lola made its mark at the Fribourg International Film Festival in Switzerland and the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival in Spain, reports ABS-CBN News.

Lola nabbed the Fribourg International Film Festival’s Audience Award and the Ecumenical Jury Award, which cites films that present the struggles of impoverished nations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Each of the these prizes came with 5,000 Swiss Francs. This means Lola took home over P400,000.

Meanwhile, the members of the International Federation of Film Societies gave Lola the Don Quijote Award, which gives it a chance to be screened at the annual International Film-Club Festival at Reggio di Calabria in Italy.

At the Las Palmas International Film Festival, Lola won the Harimaguada Golden trophy, Ex Aequo Best Actress award for Anita Linda and Rustica Carpio; and Best Photography to Odyssey Flores.

The multi-awarded film will also be shown at the Denmark, Belgium, and New York’s Tribeca Film Festival this year.
