10 Spells We'd Like to Cast on the Pesky Ills of Manila

Harry Potter probably thought he had it bad dealing with Voldemort, but at least he had magic to help him out. We merry inhabitants of Manila, however, can only wish we could magic away the most annoying things about the city. Here are some magic spells we wish actually work.

1. The Horrible Traffic

It's a fact of Manila life and practically every motorist wants to wipe the streets clean every single day.

The incantation: Disciplinus
How it works: Instantly clears up the cause of a traffic jam, whether it's the counterflowing vehicular entourage of some politician, unnecessary road repairs on a perfectly smooth road, reckless drivers caught in a car accident, or an overabundance of buses muscling in on lanes reserved for private vehicles.

2. The Life-Threatening Pollution

Garbage, smog–it's everywhere. Hardly makes for a healthy, walkable city like what the MMDA is pushing for.

The incantation: Achoo
How it works: This spell erases all signs of garbage and smog (we really wish the spell's effects are fancier than that, but that's the only change we want to see).

Brattus silencius -- instantly shuts up whiny/noisy/insufferable children (along with their parents, who should know better, and are usually equally loud themselves) in movie theaters, places of worship, restaurants, and other public places where they should behave better or stay home. More talented wizards and witches can cause the charm to inflict some additional form of well-deserved punishment, like mild electric shock or the introduction of non-fatal snake venom to the bloodstream

or the buses that say "ibabaw" then when it comes time for them to go ibabaw, they'll change the sign to "ilalim", leaving the "ibabaw" passengers to alight one stop (are there bus stops in manila?) after their intended destination.

How about those buses that spend an eternity and a half in front of such stops as Robinsons Galleria and Farmers Market trolling for passengers and honk their horns for no reason? Here's an incantation: Hinayupaknamgabus! This spell instantaneously causes buses to move automatically in 15 seconds and keeps drivers' hands off that horn.
