The UAAP Cheerdance Competition: From Samurais to Sarimanoks

Published: Sep 15, 2009 - 2:00pm

The Far Eastern University (FEU) Cheering Squad won first prize at the UAAP Cheerdance Competition on Sept. 13, but we have to admit, we watched the show for more than the props and pyramids. Which team had the best costume?

SPOT.ph asked 100 people to rank the eight teams. The results:

8. National University Pep Squad (1%)

nu1

The NU Pep Squad played safe with blue and yellow skirts for the girls and pants for the guys. The girls' teased hair in ponytails was probably the only interesting detail. They played safe with their routine too, but at least it was clean; we feel like NU and Adamson could've taken a page from each other's books in terms of coordination and costume eccentricity.

i believe the Top 3 deserved their spot and UST for being 4th, yes, stunts were 'unoriginal' or 'copied from other schools', but that's why cheerdance, as a sport, has manuals, regulatory rules and such, it's not a matter of originality, but of difficulty and execution. Watch NCC style of judging, then it'll be easier to understand how the judges judged the competition. It's not a matter of history, but WHO can do WHAT, NOW. It's a cheerdance competition, not a production number.

All are worth unsuitable except UP. I am not from UP but I am a UP pep squad fan. Better the originality than the one who uses the MJ trend just to win, the other one? Of gladiators, the next? Of geishas? What's next? Rappers?
  • anonymous Sep 30 2009 @ 09:29am Report Abuse
i think UP's still the best..true, their routines were not as clean as that of FEU but when it comes degree of difficulty, UP's routines were more difficult than the rest...and oh, btw, how come no one made mention about degree of difficulty? it's part of the criteria, isn't it?

Im from feu, and i just want to clear out that we are not having a "identity crisis"(switching from a tamaraw to a sarimanok)..as far as i'm concern, our school logo has the sarimanok symbol in it.and i think as the this season's host we are obliged to unite and lead the uaap participating schools into a harmonious relationship.and i think it is only just to use sarimanok, as it is the symbol of leadership in the early times in the philippines....
  • Dennis Sep 29 2009 @ 11:52am Report Abuse
cguro kung hindi pumalpak ang mga stunts ng UST
    pasok cla sa top-3

  • c Sep 22 2009 @ 10:41pm Report Abuse
for me hindi deserve ng feu and admu ung spot nila... ust and up pa din dapat nasa top spots.

FEU- their routine is a mix of up pep and salinggawi.. nagawa na before yan and ung tamanok nila pinalitan lang ung tiger last year ng ust. if you searched the past cheerdance competition

ADMU- nothing new, nadala lang ni "moonwalk" na nagawa na din last year.. try nyo i-search din.. i think sa ust un

ang cool nung idea na isama sa cheerdance yung UP jeepneys. nice.
for feu, i wonder kung pano sila nag-practice for their stunts. simple yet wonderful...

  • kaskasera_especial Sep 20 2009 @ 12:11am Report Abuse
i wonder why Salinggawi didn't make it to top three this year. their "torch" pyramid is so fine. the routine may not be that perfectly smooth (well, nobody had a smooth routine this year), but the concept is well executed.

kudos still to the Tigers. and congrats to the winners :)
  • starr Sep 19 2009 @ 11:17pm Report Abuse
I think UE deserved to be in the top three together with UST and UP. I wonder why FEU won the competition. Hmm.
  • Mark Francisco Sep 18 2009 @ 03:25pm Report Abuse
Correction: The UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe are FIVE-PEAT CHAMPIONS from 2001-2006, aside from their THREE-PEAT from 1994-1996.

  • vic Sep 17 2009 @ 04:07pm Report Abuse
I think the UAAP Cheerdance has evolved over the years. Its no longer the pyramids but the gimmicks. And this is good especially if creativity is the biggest factor to consider. That's why everybody anticipates UP & UST performances. I still believe that the 'host' and the '150 years' factor has influenced the judging. The jokes on facebook are all hilarious! The 'prepare yourselfs' of the UE girl, the anti-meagan young comments, the UST 'nguso girl' jinx and the FEU tamaraws turned sarimanok identity crisis!

@ Carla - TO WIN not to won
  • JL Cuevas Sep 17 2009 @ 02:13pm Report Abuse
I think FEU deserved the win - overall routine was very nice. I wasn't really impressed with UST(malinis yung sayaw nila though but I expect that of them being a dance troupe). I think UP should have been second. ADMU was the only big surprise for me(I wasn't expecting them to land on the top three). The judges this year was the best by far because they were not from any of the participating schools and they know more about cheerleading. What I personally didn't like with all the routines are the ending: large props with their banners and school name. It's not like nobody knows what school they come from. Where's the OMG what a very complicated final pyramid is that final pose gone now? Oh well it's just me and WTH it's even part of the scoring hahaha =]
  • dakangel Sep 17 2009 @ 09:52am Report Abuse
oo nga mas kpanipaniwla pa kung nkuha sa top 2 ang USTE at UP.Kesa naman sa ateneo..
  • Swiss Sep 17 2009 @ 08:34am Report Abuse
I loved UST's video arcade theme. If only it was polished all throughout. UP was okay, same old stunts but i also loved the Fergie-inspired costume. I was surprised by Ateneo because their routine's just clean, yun lang and the Samsung stunner is not even pretty! This Season had new judges so they weren't able to see who copied stunts from different universities and then concocted it to one routine. FEU only made variations of other schools' stunts with the wow effect but we UAAP cheerdance followers know better. NU is the most improved team. Adamson: totally obvious that they were sucking bigtime on the Japanese judge.

    For the author-
    ON UST:
Correction, it would have been stronger to use "five-peat" instead of "three-peat" champions.
  • Crabbypatty Sep 16 2009 @ 05:42pm Report Abuse
My inability to be inspired by anything school-related (varsity-themed spandex and feathers get a special mention) is probably one reason why I was never very popular in school.

The more important reason is that I was in school, and today remain, a Crabbypatty!
  • JC Sep 16 2009 @ 12:55pm Report Abuse
    nice gladiator inspired cdc uniforms!

@sunflower i think UP wore grass skirts last year.

anyway, check nyo sa YT ung cfad ng UST sa cheermania 2008, PARANG ganun ung costume ng UP this year, i think they used the same textile and white knee-high socks...
  • robbigtime Sep 15 2009 @ 11:13pm Report Abuse
i agree as well that UST should have won! FEU was clean but uneventful. Ateneo was unoriginal.
  • sunflower Sep 15 2009 @ 07:54pm Report Abuse
    @lakers
SAYANG AT WALA PANG SPOT LAST YR. FOR SURE TOP RIN ANG COSTUME NG UP WHICH, WHAT, WAIT, DI BA PARANG GANYAN YUNG SKIRT NG UP LAST YR? hahaha

PS. It's all over youtube? No Way? Now wonder. Gawi, tsk tsk. HAHAHAHAHA
  • RAVE Sep 15 2009 @ 07:34pm Report Abuse
Lagi namang ganyan ang resulta parang 4 teams lang ang naglalaban, nauunahan kc ng prediction, kaya nakatanim na sa utak ng judge kung cno ang dapat pansinin para manalo. Obvious naman na may favoritism.
  • Kampao Sep 15 2009 @ 07:28pm Report Abuse
in my opinion... it should be UST and UP at the top 2 positions.. i think mas marami and mas maganda ang mga highlights nila..
  • Ciel Sep 15 2009 @ 06:57pm Report Abuse
@ Jadi: Technicalities siguro. May nalaglag sa UST, malinis sa ADMU.
  • jadi Sep 15 2009 @ 06:48pm Report Abuse
di ko ma-gets kung paano nanalo ateneo over UST. hindi naman original sayaw nila. michael jackson and hairspray lang. the stunts werent that great either.
  • dementedness Sep 15 2009 @ 05:23pm Report Abuse
in fairness, FEU deserved the win.
pero next year sana makabawi uli ang UP hehe
  • Candy Sep 15 2009 @ 05:02pm Report Abuse
FEU deserves to won the first prize! Love their costume so much! But great efforts by UST though!
  • danburst Sep 15 2009 @ 04:06pm Report Abuse
actually tama si @lakers because that same routine has been used over and over in a lot of streetdance competitions so it's really a Salinggawi original
  • lakers Sep 15 2009 @ 02:28pm Report Abuse
yang routine na yan ng UST, "the thousand hands" is all over YOU TUBE. i mean, hindi orihinal na routine yan dahil naging popular sa youtube ang video na yun. key words: one thousand hands.
  • JM Sep 15 2009 @ 02:24pm Report Abuse
Feeling ko itong si Ate na nasa unahan ng UST enough na sana para manalo sila. FIERCE!!! Haha. Kaso di sumunod yung mga nasa likod nya eh, ayan tuloy! :P
