For World AIDS Day, awareness advocates wear nothing but red ribbons

  • vince_finalVINCE GOLANGCO

    Internet marketing consultant/creative director, www.wheninmanila.com

  • "The right to be free of judgment."

Having lived in the US for most of his life, Vince was certainly exposed to and knowledgeable about messages on HIV/AIDS prevention. "But I did not know anyone who living with HIV or AIDS."

That changed in 2006 when a friend suddenly confided that he had just been diagnosed as HIV-positive."I was really caught off-guard because there was nothing to indicate that my friend was even sick."

Despite the knowledge that he had on HIV/AIDS, Vince realized that there was one thing that he did not know: "What do you say when someone you care about tells you they're HIV-positive?" Golangco admits he just listened. "It seemed to me that he really needed someone to talk to."

When asked if he was afraid that his being in the photo shoot would create doubts about his sexual orientation, he answered, "No. If people see my picture here and judge then may be they should re-educate themselves on HIV/AIDS, too. It can affect anyone. And I'd like to think I'm doing this for my friend. We still talk and keep in touch, though not as much since I moved to the Philippines. Doing this will show him that he has my support even from here."

I know I am off topic but please get out of your stereotype closet.

Not because a person is married makes him/her not gay. Not because a person talks about unwanted pregnancies makes him/her not gay. Not because a person has a string of bf/gf makes him/her not gay.

That is too 1970's if not 1980's thinking.

      Anybody can be HIV positive.

Is it now an imperative to ask "what is your HIV status?" as a pick-up line? What ever happened to "Do you have a light?" or "What's your sign?" The world has really changed since the advent of this deadly virus. It takes courage for men and women regardless of their sexual orientation to stand up and openly support this cause in a country filled with bigoted and quasi-religious people. HIV AIDS is not a gay vs straight issue. It is present, it is happening and we all must do something about it. Otherwise what will kill us is ignorance. Can a cologne be a red ribbon substitute?

I think most of them are straight. Carlos is married. Karen Kunawicz is also straight with a child. It seems only Wanggo Gallaga and "Harry" are the gay ones. And who is "Harry" anyway? I only wish they chose more interesting people.

Too much focus on gay people. Where are the straight men like Robin? He should pose naked too.
