Barbie Wears Pinoy Couture

Published: Mar 3, 2010 - 10:52pm

Top Filipino designers have been commissioned by Ballet Philippines to create fashions for the iconic Barbie doll for an auction to benefit 30 scholars of the dance company. Its new chairman, 1973 Miss Universe Margie Moran Floirendo told SPOT.ph that the designers were asked to "create what they imagined as ballet costumes for Barbie dolls and for the royal and princess collections."

The event on March 17 at the Peninsula Manila Hotel is "open to collectors and supporters of Ballet Philippines," Floirendo said. " I expect interest in an advanced auction on our website. We hope to raise a million pesos. I have seen some of the creations and they are absolutely stunning." The idea for the auction came from both Floirendo and Myrna Yao of Richwell Trading, the exclusive developer and distributor of Barbie in the Philippines.

Designers were given no other parameters, causing their imagination and creativity to run free. Louis Claparols drew inspiration from old sci-fci movies, James Reyes from the black swan in Swan Lake, JC Buendia from the First Lady, and Tippi Ocampo from the modern ballerina. Vittorio Barba, Cary Santiago and Eric delos Santos dressed Barbie in clothes or versions of pieces from their past and present collections. Dong Omaga-Diaz's "Inday Barbies" wore "real and wearable clothes." There were multi-themed pieces as well: Len Nepomuceno Guiao did Opera, Disco, Cocktail, Red Carpet and Grecian, while Rajo Laurel did Fire, Wind, Water and Earth. Jojie Lloren, who was among the designers who treated the project like a sculpture, collaborated with painters, artists and sculptors to create art pieces. Jewelry designer Hans Brumann created pieces for six Barbies.

It is not their choice. No one would wish that they leave this world in such a violent manner. It is really sad because they are talented and creative individuals, they don't deserve such cruel, inhumane destiny.

Just to side track, why should there always be violent death for top designers? Think Gianni Versace, Caloy Badidoy, Santiago de Manila, etc.

    I agree.

The annual fashion show by Atelier Versace has always been the much-awaited fashion event when Gianni (badidang) was still alive. Now, look what happened to the Versace collection when Donatella (a woman) took over.

If not for the Versace name and Hollywood celeb endorsements, the products of my Mom's mananahi are much better than Donatella's collection.

My friends told me that every Filipino who entered gay bars in San Francisco during that time was suspected to be Andrew Cunanan. For the typical Caucasian eye, all Filipinos look the same.

Be happy nalang sa mga bading diba (Charot)? Ginhatag mo nalang sa mga bigaun na bayot ang mga barbi. (Etching, LOL). (Sumagi na ang bera, kawti gateyl). Hihihihi. Baka gabaan at mag murag ok-ok ka (LOL). In other words, manahimik ka na bakla (etchos lang ateng) ;-). Lumaki sana ang mga tiil mo (LOL). Para di na magkasya ang size nine na gladiator sandals nimo. Finally! Every young girl and pa-ghels dream! Dress up a Barbie! I remember, I used to play with my cousin's barbie dolls. I hate my girl cousins because I felt they don't deserve to own them because they don't take care of them properly and they don't know how to make clothes for them.

At least now, my sorellas, whom I share a unique kinship have FINALLY come to their senses by dressing up real dolls and not those pesky Sto. Niños and depressing Mater Dolorosas, which I totally abhor and frankly, I find it a bit perverse. Go! Unchain the little ghels in you and play with your dream Barbies. Dress them up and celebrate your creativity.

Hindi na bawal ang maging bading! Kumawala sa inyong haula. Lumipad na parang ibong pipit na nutututo pa lamang umibig! Iladlad ang mga kapa. Sumayaw na parang trumpong kankarot. Magharutan, maglandian. Magtampisaw sa batis ng katarungan at kaligayahan.
