The Spotty Awards for the Most Cringe-Worthy Campaign Ads

Published: May 5, 2010 - 8:13am

As election season reaches its most-awaited climax on May 10, we take stock of the political ads that we all inadvertently watched. Instead of boring the public with a straightforward list of their accomplishments and a copy of their résumé, these candidates chose to dazzle the public with their "performances" and props (human or otherwise). SPOT.ph hands out The Spotty Awards to the most cringe-worthy campaign ads of the election season.

Mar Roxas explores alternative transportation.

BEST TRANSPORTATION: Candidate for vice president Mar Roxas' pedicab

Cringe moment: The sight of Roxas driving a pedicab makes it look like he's trying too hard to be liked. Much like a rich boy who tells his houseboy, "Wow, I'll pretend to be you just for today."

What the spin doctors didn't think about: Former president Joseph "Erap" Estrada had his "Jeep ni Erap" gimmick. We all know that vehicle was forced to change its route. If it could happen to a jeep, then even more so to a puny pedicab.

How could they do this to the Star for All Seasons?

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Vilma Santos in hubby Ralph Recto's ad

Cringe moment: This picture looks too perfect. Santos seems too much like a Stepford Wife here. And did you catch that look Ralph gave to stepson Lucky Manzano before they dramatized corruption via pan de sal? Does baby-of-the-family Ryan Christian know he was made to represent the clueless masses?

What the spin doctors didn't think about: Lucky Manzano's father, Edu, is running for vice president under a different party. How come he doesn't have an ad campaigning for him, too? In any case, they should have stuck to the Vilma-Ralph tandem. Leave the offspring out of it.

Hey, what about Rissa Hontiveros' "Maganda ang Laban" jingle? Her awkward bobbing of her head to the beat of the music is hilarious.

Oh shucks, maybe I AM old. I actually like that Noynoy says 'sabi ng nanay' ko. I respect and like anyone who, regardless of age, falls back on what their mothers (and fathers, for that matter)have taught them.

In the end, we still crave our parents' approval. We want to do them proud. We have to.

i agree with the editorial the Jamby Madrigal political ad looks like a horror movie.. it's like a teaser for a sequel to Eli Roth's Hostel movies hehehehehe...

by the way did anyone saw Gilbert Remulla's latest ad, he appears to be auditioning for a newly formed boy band.. what's with the stop hand gestures and singing ur own jingle?

As for me, the Villar soundtrak is the best in campaign jingle since he uses the poor children in payatas who indeed sam ino a pool of garbage... IS Philippines damn so poor to even bath in a pool of garbage? then what do the rich people do to save them? Splurging their millions at the mall and bought expensive things? How about PGMA? Why can't she suffer and be charge for her graft and corruption?

    @quot unquot

For those who are curious, I would rather focus on the achievement of my candidate instead of negative issues.

Former Justice Secretary Silvestre Bello III
    - Justice Secretary under President Corazon C.
    Aquino
    - longest Undersecretary of Justice in charge of Investigation and Prosecution
    - pioneered a lot of good programs while in the Department of Justice (Katarungang Pambarangay, Witness Protection Program, building of Halls of Justice and upgrading facilities in jails all over the country, and the prosecution and resolution of many big cases that made history)

Ansagawa nung bagong ad ni Risa Hontiveros. It has an R&B type jingle, and it sort of suggests that we should vote for her just because she's beautiful. Kris also appears at the end, so there's that extra cringe factor of a particularly unattractive woman endorsing a relatively attractive one. I'll vote for her, maybe. I like hot chicks in the senate.

  • i\'m voting for my butt May 06 2010 @ 05:28pm Report Abuse
Wow I just vomited on my desk. It pains me that politicians can only appeal to voters with a lowest common denominator strategy. Because it actually works. What happened to us.

@Irine: you might want to check with Bureau of Immigration Bebot Bello's track record.. ever heard of human trafficking? or Indians trafficking? who can come and go and bring 1000 more Indians to our country for free?

@jakile: Thanks for the reminder. We added Jamby's ad to the Spotty awards.

It gives me the cringer everytime NoyNoy says in his ads "sabi ng Nanay ko"... my goodness Noy2 IS a 50 year old mama's boy... and that "hindi ka nag-iisa " melo-dramatic all-star cast ad/ music video which incidentally looks like a staple scene in many Pinoy Horror movies with the mobs charging to torch an aswang... i have always wished that those vacuous celebrities will be torching Noynoy in the end....
  • jakile May 06 2010 @ 11:49am Report Abuse
i cant believe jamby madrigal's political ad isnt in the list. hers is the worst.

There should be some kind of a bonus "Penis Envy Award" which rightfully belongs to Gibo. But de Venecia scores points for getting Dota in every house.
  • Irene May 06 2010 @ 08:39am Report Abuse
I am voting Justice Man Bebot Bello (#6) for Senator even with his superhero ad.

I encourage others to do the same.
You will not regret your vote.

This guy has what it takes TO BE SENATOR; credentials, experience, track record and most of all has always been away from the limelight and was never linked to any corruption, controversy and scandal whatsoever.

It is time that Filipinos vote on track record and NOT ON POPULARITY

    Thanks.

I'm gonna vote for Miriam 12x just because of that ad.
  • danevillaluz May 05 2010 @ 08:03pm Report Abuse
joey de venecia doesn't deserve the best makeover award. it should've been given to jinggoy estrada! my gosh! i couldn't even recognize him in his ad.

as for noynoy, he really deserved that award. i thought it was surreal when my brother talked about it. it turned out to be real. O_o

so is miriam santiago. i get goosebumps everytime i see that ad. *shivers*
  • come on May 05 2010 @ 06:31pm Report Abuse
I hate that Noynoy ad. I hate so I want to kidnap it, torture it endlessly until it cries blood, kill it, wait for it to resurrect as a zombie, and then torture it again. I will not vote for Noynoy because of that ad. A presidential president who thinks that ad deserves to be seen by millions (or allow that ad to be seen by million) does not deserve the presidency.
  • HELLO May 05 2010 @ 02:29pm Report Abuse
manny villar indeed deserve the best original soundtrack

also best in child performance, best in cinematography, best cast ensemble (the womanizer ad) indie film of the year as well as highly budgeted turned flop of the year

    hahahaha
