McDonald's pulls out "BF-GF commercial" after calls from CBCP to stop airing ad

Published: Apr 13, 2011 - 8:54am

The controversial "BF-GF commercial"

(SPOT.ph) McDonald's has pulled out its ad dubbed by some as the "BF-GF commercial," after the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) called for them to stop airing the ad, reports Inquirer.net.

The giant fast food chain decided to pull out the 30-second ad from major television networks yesterday after some Catholic Church officials said it could send the wrong message to children. In the commercial, a little girl asks a boy if she was already his girlfriend. The boy says no, claiming girlfriends are too demanding. However, he seemingly changes his mind when the girl says all she wants is the P25 French fries at McDonald's.

McDonald's Philippines Vice President for Marketing Margot Torres told Radio Veritas that they have pulled out the ad because they respect the call of Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez. "So by (Wednesday), a different McDonald's ad should be seen on TV," Torres said.

In response, Iñiguez told Radio Veritas, "We are very happy that McDonald's listened to our plea, (and) that it agrees with the sentiment and the reflection of the church on the commercial spot."

Earlier, Fr. Melvin Castro said the commercial is "very shallow" and "cheapens human relationships," reports Inquirer.net. The executive secretary of the CBCP Episcopal Commission on Family and Life said, "If the ad attempted to teach commitment, (it failed) because it was too superficial to point to a packet of French fries as the basis of a relationship."

Iñiguez also said earlier, "The two children are not even at the right age for this kind of relationship... It (the ad) might also pave the way for us to lose sight of the good ways of shaping the values of our children."

men, the commercial is cute. But I agree with CBCP :D napag-aralan namin sa ADV yan. pero sana, bago irelease ang commercial, nagask muna sila ng permission sa bawat Advertising Agency. Sayang ang pera for advertisement. It takes hundreds of thousands for nothing. Hopefully bumenta ung commercial :)

Natumbok mo.

Cute for adults but confusing for children- this gives Hildren the wrong idea about relationships and WHAT AGE to start having them. Cute sa iba kasi wala silang values. Nangyayari nga sa totoong buhay, tulad ng teenage sex and pregnancy at iba pa. Cute, no?

Inasmuch as I hate Justin Bieber for singing "i'd give everything you need" love songs which clearly for one, he can't experience what love is at his pubic-hairless age and that two, he hasn't yet known the ramifications of going into relationships (builiding a family, etc.), rnrnI'd say thatrnrnalthough the commercial is cute and sweet, it's inappropriate at their age (take note: not immoral, but inappropriate YET).

I won't be surprised kung pati ito eh magiging child abuse incident na naman, kung gugustuhin eh pwede hanapan. We live in a democratic country, kaya lahat ng tao pwede magbigay ng opinion. Some people might find it cute kaya lang it really sends the wrong message. People should look beyond the fact that it was the CBCP that requested its removal from the airwaves and pay attention to what they are really concerned about. We should always ask ourselves: what kinds of things do we really want our children to learn?

I would take the side of CBCP on this issue. Not all young adults are being given proper guidance nowadays. So whatever the church did, it will obviously be for the children that will be watching the ad. Mcdo gave in to CBCP's request because they have understood the reason for the pull out. Let's not overact about this, there will always be better and entertaining stuff in the TV Land that would not ruin our morals.

I agree with the CBCP on this. The first time I saw the ad (busy with the issue of willing willie and jan jan), i thought this will be misunderstood. It maybe right that this happens in reality but we also have to know that the company (Mcdo) targets the young generation. To teenagers and adults, young adults, this (maybe) is cute and entertaining but the message is not only for us who can easily decipher and comprehend. It is for the children as well, after all McDonalds is more of a child's favorite place to eat. It will always have an impact on them.
