If Nora Aunor is named National Artist, congressman says Vilma Santos should also be National Artist

Published: Apr 19, 2012 - 7:37am

InterAksyon.com reported that Bacolod Representative Anthony Golez Jr. on Monday (April 16) filed filed House Resolution 2317, which is "A Resolution urging His Excellency President Benigno Aquino III, the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts to confer to Nora Aunor the honor of being named as a National Artist of the Philippines for her immense contribution to Philippine arts."

Responding to Golez's move House Deputy Speaker Lorenzo "Erin" Tanada III on Wednesday, April 18, contended that "if 'Superstar' Nora Aunor is to be nominated for National Artist, then so should her career rival, 'Star for All Seasons' and current Batangas governor Vilma Santos."

InterAksyon.com noted that presidential spokesman Ricky Carandang, said "We will leave it to Congress [to make the decision]. We don't want to get drawn into this debate between Noranians and Vilmanians."

if Nora Aunor be given a National Artist Award, Vilma Santos is also credible to recieve that award too, because Gov. Vilma contributed much not only to showbiz but also in serving the people of Batangas. I'm not from Batangas, i am a Bulakeno but i saw more of her accomplishment being a governor of her province.

Well, she deserves. She has gained international acclaim for her thespic skill which the other pretenders have not yet achieved. So even though Dolphy, Erap and Eddie Garcia may have started earlier than Aunor, the latter has gained, I think, 4 international awards in recognition of her acting greatness. Vilma has been recognized in other international film festivals abroad but the awards she got for acting excellence has not matched that of Aunor. In 2011 (or in 2010?), Aunor was hailed as the leading actress among the 10 best actresses in Asia for her portrayal in Himala, even though on homeground, only the Manila Film Festival Award-giving body recognized her on account of her moving portrayal of a visionary in 1981. The rest of the Award-giving bodies, e.g., Urian, CMMA, Famas awarded the honor of best actreess to Vilma for her role in Relasyon ion 1982 for the latter's lst grandslam. Yes, after about 28 years, and it took an unbiased award giving body to correct this very obvious injustice done to the Superstar of the Phil. Movies. I therefore strongly egg concerned parties to push the giving of National Artist Tile to Nora Aunor, and to no ther else this year. In the next coming year/s, others may follow.

This, I guess was expected because as rivals it is construed as they are equal. It will all depend on the basis of the decision. It will not be bad if both of them will be given recognition. If both of them are qualified then be it.
On the lighter side, I am hoping that this National Artist issue stops here and with Ms. Nora and Ms. Vilma for now. One might think of giving same recognition to Kris Aquino on the basis of her movie, "Pido Dida" which made good then :-)

If Carlo Caparas who only lucked out in doing 1 decent movie (the original Panday with FPJ) in his entire dubious career but managed to have some connections to the PGMA administration and guaranteed his National Artist status, I do not see anything wrong with Nora Aunor being accorded the honor. Regardless of her personal turmoils, her body of work has way much more artistic merits... Unfortunately, fans of the equally deserving Vilma Santos will push for the same for their idol... relegating the issue to yet another ridiculous incarnation of the Guy-Vi rivalry... which will not be good for their cause of having their idols recognized...
