The Bourne Legacy star Jeremy Renner weighs in on PH: "It's a wonderful place to be in and visit"

Published: Apr 20, 2012 - 2:56pm

Philippine Daily Inquirer entertainment scribe Ruben V. Nepales (via Inquirer.net) reports that in a recent interview, The Bourne Legacy star Jeremy Renner was asked about the Philippines. Renner, who plays Hawkeye in the upcoming movie, The Avengers, said that Pinoys were "welcoming and loving."

He also added this observation about the country: "I’ve never seen anything quite like it. Such beauty on those islands—more than seven thousand of them! I went to a couple and they were unlike anything I’ve seen. Beautiful! But then you have this squalor, this absolute poverty. That’s hard to process. But the beauty is that the people living in poverty have the biggest smiles on their faces. I don’t know if it’s a genetic or a chemical thing in their brains, but they’re just a happy people! And it’s infectious. The Philippines is a wonderful place to be in and visit."

Philippines is a wonderful place to be in, live in and do not be just contented in visiting it. It is more fun here in the Philippines!

Richie, I would have to agree.

why is it so hard for some of us to believe that poor people can be happy and put on a smile even if they are poor? bakit kailangan pa nating i-qualify na kasi celeb ang nakita nila siempre mag smile sila. They are simple people who appreciates life even in difficulties for all we know they have not seen movies of Renner for they are poor.

@genuine: the poor were the people who patiently made "uzi" every shooting day of bourne legacy (aside from the media). the rest of us working folks (read: middle class) were too busy and too pissed at the monstrous traffic that their shooting created that we couldnt smile at all.

Of course 'the people living in poverty have the biggest smile on their faces." They were eye to eye with a celeb, for crying out loud. Any other day, especially in 40 degree heat, a smile would be reserved for another day.

This kind of compliment and these good words from someone who is not a filipino is heart warming and at the same time provides motivation for us, real filipinos to improve our country. To do our share to make this beautiful country of ours a haven of beautiful people.
The smile on these people amidst poverty is what makes us different and a sure sign of strength if not optimism :-)
