Lourd de Veyra delivers speech at UP College of Mass Communication graduation, gives Karate Kid-inspired life tips

Published: Apr 24, 2012 - 4:02pm

SPOT.ph blogger and TV5 broadcast journalist Lourd de Veyra gave the commencement address for the University of the Philippines-Diliman's College of Mass Communication on Sunday, April 22. As expected, his speech was funny, irreverent, and straight-to-the-gut, what with references to pop culture spawns such as the Karate Kid.

In the first few minutes of his speech, De Veyra said, "Para sa inyong lahat: walang sisihan. At para sa lahat ng mga aktibista dito, sana ay patapusin niyo muna akong magsalita bago kayo umakyat dito at magwagayway ng banderang 'Serve the People' (Tingnan natin kung makakapag-serve the people pa rin kayo habang nagsusulat ng dialogue sa telenovela ni Aljur Albrenica sa susunod na taon) [For all of you here: Don't blame me. And for all the activists here, please let me finish what I have to say before you come up here to wave the "Serve the People" flag. (Let's see if you can still 'serve the people' while you're writing the dialogue for Aljur Abrenica's telenovela next year)]."

InterAksyon.com posted the De Veyra's entire speech online. To read the whole acerbic commencement speech, log on to (of course) InterAksyon.com.

    When Lourd said:
    "Libre naman ang magbukas ng blog (Aba, maraming kumikita diyan; lalo na pag tungkol sa pagkain— kahit hindi ka marunong magsulat)."
    ...Anton Diaz of Our Awesome Planet came into mind! Haha!

    @tambay sa kanto,

    ang ganda ng interpretation mo sa tula, gusto ko iyan. sobrang mangarap, namamali ng tingin kaya nag sisisi. Tama ka, karamihan sa ibang pilipino, ganyan. kaya nga nasa huli ang pagsisisi. Ayaw pang matuto sa karanasan ng iba gusto pang maranasan nila at sila ang magsisisi. Akala naman nila maiiba hahahah!

    Buti pa ang UP marunong magtanaw ng mga Achievers at iniimbita nila whether speakers o faculty nila regardless kung saan ka graduate. Pero UST, ang labo ng Alumni Affairs. Ang Daming magagaling na Alumni, at mga luminaries sa kani-kanilang academic fields, hindi man lang ma recognize o mabigyan ng importansya. HOY UST ALUMNI AFFAIRS OFFICE,MAGISING KAYO!

    Refreshing indeed!
    Ako ang gusto ko yung tula sa last part, yung nakatapak ng dumi habang naglalakad. Ito kasi ang nangyayari sa karamihan ng mga tao. Naglalakad ng nakatingin sa bituin, ergo, naglalakad ng masyadong mataas ang pangarap, hindi nakikita ang mga nakapaligid na bagay at mahal sa buhay na nasa tabi lamang. Kung saan saan nagpupunta para lang sa pangarap at salapi, ayun tuloy, nakakatapak ng dumi. Ibig sabihin, napapasama ang lagay ng buhay hanggang sa magsisi na lamang at mabuhay ng may regrets at failure. Parang dumi lang ang regret sa buhay. Karamihan ito ang experience ng mga sasabihin ko uli pero walang mag react ng masama, mga kababayang iniiwan ang trabaho dito at pamilya

    Maganda ang speech at ang nagustuhan ko ay:
    "Huwag magtagal sa trabahong hindi mo gusto, bakit mo naman gagawin iyon, dahil sa salapi" Maganda di ba?

    darating nga naman ang salapi basta may naniniwala sa iyo kahit isang tao lamang magagawa mo ito kahit ano pa man ang gusto mong trabaho. basta ibuhos ang lahat ng lakas at siempre may suporta sa taong naniniwala sa iyo. Applicable sa lahat ng propesyon. Galing ni Lourd de Veyra

    Read his speech. Quoted Vonnegut, Voltaire, and a poem by Lacaba. Kung bakit binigay ko sa isang babae ang kopya ko ng mga tula ni Lacaba, i'll never know.
