Non Alquitran of The Philippine Star reports that former national badminton sensation Karyn Velez died on Monday, August 12, in a road accident along C-5.
According to the report, the 24-year-old athlete was supposedly on her way home when her car "swerved into the opposite lane of the C-5 flyover before being rammed by a closed van." Pasig City police Chief Senior Superintendent Mario Rariza said Velez was rushed to the Medical City but was pronounced dead at about 2:25 a.m. due to severe body injuries.
Velez was formerly ranked as the country's number 1 badminton player until she opted to move to the United States to get more ranking points. In 2009, she was invited by the Kuala Lumpur Rackets Club to train in Malaysia in preparation for a tournament in Australia.
